Goddard?

That's a pretty silly comment.

Goddard will be watched because we all know he has a history of poor onfield behavior and body language towards his teammates.

Nothing to do with any conspiracy theory.

I know but it's what it feels like anything that Essendon does now gets scrutinised to the nth degree.every time I see Essendon on the back and front page of the paper my first though that comes to mind is "What did we do now"

Open minded as a neutral observer, it will be a challenge for Goddard but who can say how he will respond to to the challenge? Could be a gun captain for all we know, might be an opportunity for him to lose those elements of his game (finger pointing, verbals at team mates) in order to lead his players.

But as a general point, it's hard for outside players to be captain because they can't set an example in the contest. For example, Marc Murphy.

I can only go by what I saw at Essendon training the other day.

There was Goddard, wearing a cap, the day it was announced he would be captain with Baguley his right hand man. First impressions, in what was a pretty hard session - won the hard ball. No obvious finger pointing.

He's one I would like as a top up great bloke and a champion footballer.

That is the last player you would ever get, seriously. Is as insulting as Collingwood trying to take Nick Riewoldt. These two bleed red, white and black, and you would never take the white out of Lenny, ever.

FIGJAM was a terrible leader at first but responded to the challenge and became a great captain.

BJ left the Saints for a couple reasons...

The big one was tha this last 2 seasons with the Saints were fairly average... certainly not his best, and well below expectation, yet despite this he demanded the captaincy and he demanded to be the highest paid player at the club.

Though the Watters regime was not the best, I think they were quite rightly a little miffed at BJ's conduct, and they (IMHO) correctly identified that they would perhaps get better value from BJ's moving on rather than keeping on a player with a suspect attitude that is past his best on major coin.

In addition to this however, I suspect BJ himself saw the writing on the wall in terms of where the club was at and decided that he didn't want to stay and be part of a rebuild, cop hard tags etc. opposed to being 1 amongst 4-5 good mids where he could use his natural talents as opposed to having to grind out the hard work. Hence I reckon he hiked up his demands above his value to
a) put the Saints off
b) see if anyone would bite

The guy wanted glory - he's been one of the highest paid bombers over the last few seasons. His performance has improved compared to his last few seasons at the Saints but I certainly don't think they've gotten value for me.
But I'm just ab itter Saints fan I guess

While this may be true in some way, I know for a fact he told teammates the club was too far apart in $ for him to stay.
