I came across this article this morning, and considering how well it explained the situation, and how much Gold Coast will impact other clubs' drafting selections, thought others might want to read it too.

THE DRAFT rules for Gold Coast will be as follows:

1. 2009 NAB AFL Draft
Gold Coast to have the capacity to sign 12 x 17 year-olds born in the January – April window (January 1 to April 30, 1992).
2. 2010 NAB AFL Draft
Gold Coast to have first pick in each round
Gold Coast to have selections 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 in round one
3. 2009 NAB Rookie Draft
Gold Coast to have selections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
4. 2010 NAB Rookie Draft
Gold Coast to alternate Queensland priority selections with Brisbane Lions. Gold Coast to have first selection
5. Zoned access
Gold Coast to have zoned access to up to five Queensland players prior to each of 2010, 2011 and 2012 NAB AFL Drafts
Gold Coast to have zoned access to up to three Northern Territory players prior to the 2010 NAB AFL Draft
6. 2010 Post-season, AFL listed player access
Gold Coast to have capacity to pre-list 10 players who had previously nominated for the AFL Draft, or were previously listed with an AFL club.
Gold Coast to have capacity to sign up to 16 uncontracted players
Gold Coast would also have an expanded list size and TPP allowance in the club’s initial four years from 2011 to 2014, which would be as follows:
2011 – 48 senior list, nine rookies with $1m TPP extra allowance;
2012 – 46 senior list, nine rookies with $800k TPP extra allowance;
2013 – 42 senior list, nine rookies with $600k TPP extra allowance;
2014 – 40 senior list, nine rookies with $400k TPP extra allowance;
2015 – 38 senior list, nine rookies in line with other AFL clubs.
As part of the entry rules for the Gold Coast side, the AFL Commission resolved that any club that lost a player to the expansion side would be eligible for a compensation pick (after the entry of both Gold Coast and the second club to be based in Sydney).

Compensation picks will be tradeable and can be used by clubs at any time within five years. First round compensation picks cannot be used until the end of the first round in the 2010 and 2011 drafts. Clubs will be required to nominate the year in which they plan to use the compensation pick before the first round of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season in that particular year.

The compensatory pick would be assessed around the player’s age (greater weighting for younger players), club contract ranking (greater weighting for club key players), onfield performance (greater weighting for strong club best and fairest performance) and draft position if less than four years experience.

This ranking system will then determine if a club is eligible for a compensatory pick in one of five spots – first-round pick, end-of-first-round pick, second-round pick, end-of-second-round pick or third-round pick. Under the model, the round-one, round-two or round-three picks would be taken immediately after the pick the club already has in that round in the draft that year.

Compensatory pick rating sounds a bit iffy to me. Who makes the decision? Because it seems like a very subjective test.

But I don't see clubs losing top players for nothing so it wouldn't apply to the top players. Would be interesting to see how much players are valued and being able to save picks for later drafts is a fun idea.

that's true but i think it'll come out pretty fair.

the thing the gold coast is going to need a leg up and they'll need to be competitive from their first year otherwise it could be an absolute disaster for the AFL.

It'll be interesting to see how many of those first round picks the gold coast trades in the 2010 trade period. They have 9 picks in the first 15 picks - i reckon they'll trade 6 of those to sign 3 or 4 big name players whom they can build the club around from the first year.

Going in with a bunch of kids and uncontracted players will be a disaster for them. all clubs will be looking to sign up their star players so essentially the majority of those uncontracted players will be rejects - or at best second teir players.

Dimwitriou said on the coouch the other night that compensation would be 2nd and thrid round draft picks.

Sheehan asked if that would be the case if Reiwoltd went and he said yes, so all semblance of fairness is obviously a farce

i saw that on the couch too and thought it was a bit rough, but that article mentions clubs could get compensated with a pick as high as a first rounder. it also mentions they could get "a late first round pick" so that suggests a first round pick is somewhere in the top 8.

as i said though i don't think they'll get too many big names thorugh the uncontracted players. clubs would be absolutely stupid to allow big name players to leave that way.

Just say Riewoldt said to the saints i wanna go up there and play in my home territory, the saints would still want to re-sign him and trade him so they could get an approriate compensation (such as 2 top 10 picks).

EDIT; just noticed the clubs get to use their compensation pick straight after the pick they got in the draft in either the first round, second round or third round as deemed by the AFL commission.

Ill got a question how do they pre list these players, do they simply steal them? Meaning if they are unsigned "ala" like Judd was just take him?
id say clubs have to re-sign players by a certain date at which point they are free game for gold coast. i'm assuming the player would have to agree to go to the gold coast - it wouldn't be like the draft where they have no choice.

By their 5th year they play in if not win a Premeirship game.

Those picks and bonus spending dollars is a little bit too fair to the Gold Coast.

Should be a very interesting few years for the game.
From what i can tell it is all downhill from here:mad:

I see your point, but I actually think that the introduction of GC will make the comp more competitive and even overall. I know that may not necessarily be a plus for us, but I think with how we have started our rebuild we'll be right. Would rather be us than say a Richmond or North Melbourne that's for sure.

Yeah gotta agree with that.
Each year the top draftees show themselves. Cruizer,gibbs,rioli,rich:mad:,zibiell etc are a few over the last 3 years, so come 2013-14 the comp should be nice and even due to the fact no-one has any good new comers and will be relying on their ageing lists and turning round 2 picks into good 100 game players.

Were in a bloody good spot atm. So much better than most teams.

As stupid as this sounds Geelong will be feeding eachother with wooden spoons in coming years.
Not getting any good picks for the last 3 years and then the GC taking all the good kids for the next 3 years theyre gonna feel the pinch.

All the players that make that team are 27+ and the younger ones arent anything fancy.

Besides Bartel,Ablet and Selwood the rest Stokes,Gamble,Hawkins (next Locket my arse),Varcoe, Taylor arent as good as they might look surrounded by the champs in their team.
Wojcinski,Scarlett,Rooke,Ottens,Mooney,Milburn,Ling,Kelly,Johnson,Hunt,Harley,Enright,Cory and Chapman.
Most of these guys are 29-30 except Kelly and Johnson who are 26.

Probally the reason theyre so good, having so many players in the "peak" years of their careers especially experience wise on the field at the one time. Add Bartel,Ablet and Selwood and your set. Its that easy:D

After the worst off season 07-08 and our worst season ever in 08 I cant wait for the build up towards Gold Coast, Bring it on I say!

Also take into consideration Geelong didn't build their premiership on high draft picks. All they need is a few more father son picks!!
