Good, Bad and the Very Ugly Vs Swans

Good:
Dangerfield - What a gun this bloke is. Make him captain and give him the keys to the city.

Rutten - Very solid game on Bradshaw. I thought his body positioning was outstanding. Still one of the best full backs in the league despite what some people have said.

Thompson - I thought he was back to his best. Never rushes and always looks to have plenty of time. Very effective with his disposal too, almost never gets caught out.

Sellar - His first quarter was exceptional. He moved really well around the packs and generally looked strong and poised. Sucks he got injured :(

Mackay - Looked scintillating when dashing through the midfield. Get the ball into this blokes hands. Went missing for parts of the game but a very very promising performance.

Bad: (note i might be more harsher than usual because I am pretty pissed atm )
Young - Real tough introduction to AFL footy, much like Armstrong last week. Struggled to have any influence on the game and got towelled up by Craig's coaching (cough Ben McGlynn).

Burton - Clearly underdone. Thought the club might have learnt how underdone Burton's tend to perform. Shouldn't have played today.

Douglas - Is Douglas french for shank? Caused me a few facepalms today. Much better effort compared to last week but really needs to start showing more.

Hentschel - No good in offense. No good in defence. Had no idea where to move today as a defender and was often caught in no mans land. Time for the club to make a call.

Cook - Doesn't seem more than a good SANFL player to me. Much like Dougie with his skills, turned it over far too much.

Ugly:
Neil Craig - Was outcoached today plain and simple. A few of his matchups were baffling to say the least.
Young on McGlynn can you be serious?
Why was our best midfielder playing at FULL BACK?!?
Taylor Walker was another victim. Should have been moved back closer to goal much earlier.

Will be very nervous next Sunday afternoon.

Not sure that Trucks efforts against an ageing and injury recovering Bradshaw were that heroic? He (Bradshaw) has hardly been trail blazing in previous weeks.

Good: Dangerfield, Petrenko, Mcleod, Douglas (with some exceptions!).

Bad: Our lack of intensity or desire to win the ball. We were second to the ball all day. You are NEVER going to win a game of footy unless you kick a bigger score, to do that you've got to get the damned ball!

Ugly: Some terrible match up decisions made by the coaching panel.

Agree with the ugly point but seriously, there is no way that in AFL footy terms Douglas' game should be described as good. One excellent interception and goal was a highlight, and he did look ok in defence, but he made so many errors and turnovers from indecisiveness (a trait it seems he will never improve) that it was not a good game.

Sure, he tried harder than some of our blokes and that is to be commended but if that's a good standard we're screwed.

For mine, Petrenko is a way better small forward option and he doesn't deserve a midfield stint.

This week, let's see if he can play BP again. We need a small defender till Johncock returns. Maybe he can be forced to make simple, first option decisions back there and actually improve his performance.

Fair point. However, in a day where attaining a "good" level seemed all but impossible, you have to acknowledge that the kid tried to get us into the game. Whilst the majority of his team mates trailed their opponents to the ball, he actually broke lines and gained possession. His poor disposal is concerning, no doubt. But, in a game where highlights were few and far between, Douglas HAD to be "rewarded" for at least trying. He certainly doesn't deserve to be this week's poster whipping child!

UGLY: Umpiring. How many times does Tippett have to be assualted before he gets a free. Almost every marking contest he is either held on to or has his arms chopped. Just gets zero respect from umps. If he played for a vic team he would be leagues leading goal kicker just from free kicks.

Yep. This comes under the 'downright ****ing ignorant umpiring" section. It happened all day yesterday. I blame that total loser giesh... whatever his name is, targeting Tippett at the start of the year as a player who stages for free kicks. But yesterday it was painfully obvious from the outset that it was open season on Tippett.

Welcome to Warren Tredrea's career. Best exponent of it has always been Presti. I think Tredders has given birth to a number of his children over the years.....Looks like Tippett may be going down the same path. Were his name Riewoldt, he would get the free for someone giving him a dirty look.

The Good:

Petrenko and Dangerfield

The Bad:

The bloke sitting next to me who should learn Adelaide is 3 syllables not one when chanting and the ridiculous woo added at the end.

Our inability to kick the ball when going forward. Too handball happy.

Reilly and Hentschel. Were they even out there ?

Neil Craig's inability to have an alternative game plan when the current one isn't working.

The Ugly:

Disposal. How many times did we miss a target from 15 metres ?

Our growing injury list

Yes. Too bad we cant have untouchables like every vic team. The frees given to Saint nick this year are at times laughable compared to what we have to put up with.

We have to remember we started last year 2 and 5 and we finished 1 game outside the top 4. But i can't see a big turnaround of sorts like last year where it just clicked. Somethings up, and i'm just not sure what it is

Yep, at least last year in those early round when we lost you could see what we were trying to put together and then eventually it clicked and we started winning games, even dominating them.

This year though I've seen nothing in the first two rounds as to what we are trying to do. We are just getting smashed and look so poor.

I agree there's something up. How can we have fallen so far behind where we were last year? Was our pre season really that bad? Have we been training too much and too hard?

I don't know but I just hope we get some answers soon.

You cannot have a small forward in the team who kicks 1.4. If he had nailed his first three attempts when we were on top, we could have got some momentum going. Another typical Douglas game, slipping over, fumbling, putting teammates under pressure. Count the number of stuff-ups that are directly related to him every week. There's players in the Amateur League that have great intensity, but that doesn't mean they should be playing AFL.

Dougie should've kicked those goals. Even though we looked hopeless if had converted the game could've easily been a different story. If I remember correctly his goal kicking has mostly been a bit off, especially from set shots.

To be fair to him in terms of stuffing up, countless times when he had the ball in the centre square and got caught there was absolutely nothing to go to up field. No one was moving, no one was making a lead, there were just too few options on several occasions.

The Good:
Sellar looked as though he has improved even further this year and looked like he could be a genuine asset.
Regular whipping boy Richie Douglas showed many senior team mates what work rate is all about (pity he couldn't finish off his great effort).
Other whipping boy Brent Reilly was hard at it, used the ball better than any one else in our team and had a game high 7 tackles.

The Bad:
Our midfield was completely pantsed by Sydney who no one could say have the most talented midfield going around. If we can't even break even against them what will Geelong or Saints do to us.
I have defended having 3 older guys this year but they all let me down badly yesterday. Not one could hold their head up and all had time in the midfield without even getting their hand on it.

The Ugly:
Skill, disposal and workrate. All things we pride ourselves on. Dougy should have had 5 goals by half time and Edwards kicking sideways from a free in the centre and missing an unmarked player by 10 metres from 25 metres away. That nearly cost a goal and is simply not good enough by someone who has played 300 games of AFL footy. He certainly wasn't alone but it stood out to me as an example of the senior guys not setting the example that they need to if they are still going to still be in our team.

Good:
Dangerfield's second half
Petrenko's game

Bad:
Turnovers.
Delivery into the 50
Will Young debut
How it seems so hard for us to get it out of defence cleanly.

Ugly:
2nd quarter.

Was Sellar playing Ruck, forward or defense before he went down. Didn't see the match but everyone keeps talking his game up.

Again not seeing the game I will refrain from commenting on good, bad and ugly.

My assumption though, based on seemingly similar p*ss poor effort as last week.

Ugly: contested possession, the complete lack of desire for the hard ball and in turn to pressure the opposition player. My biggest concern at the moment is that although we look lost when exposed to man on man pressure, we don't respond with equal man on man pressure on the opposition
Related, the loose checking in defense of forwards and midfielders, this is not up to the back 6 solely, the defense mids need to lend a hand in there.
Shocking disposal and the inability to find targets going forward. The habit of the team to simply bomb it long in the hope Tippett will mark it is hurting

Good: Mackay, Petrenko, Danger and others starting to show glimpses of this in the fnal half, more run, more courage to break the lines and greater movement across the ground to provide options.

Pretty much somes it up for me, look I like everyone on here is Adelaide through and through, but **** me how much more of this rubbish do we put up with??? Yes we are missing Knights and Johncock but the 22 put out their yesterday were a pretty good 22, whats the reason for the lack of intensity, the zone is breaking down/ being worked out and we have nothing to goto, no plan B, just stubborn, it seems we play that way and there is no other way we are going to play, is it true Craig was booed off after the game yesterday (was reported in the Herald Sun here in Melbourne that he was)

Ive watched part of the 2nd quarter on Fox last night and nearly cried when Edwards went to kick to Reilly on the wing about 30m away and he didnt even kick the distance, Doughty was smashed in defence and clearly was not on it yesterday as that goal where Seaby passed it off then kept running and Doughty ran to the goal square anticpating that Sydney were going to kick it long but ended up Seaby was by himself and just had the ball chipped back to him for a set shot 35m out:(

I have major major concerns right now and I have for a very long time, I dont want to but from what Im seeing it aint to flash:(

Good: Dangerfield, Rutten, Douglas, not panic stations just yet. We matched them for 3 quarters.

Bad: Cook, Walker, Tippett, Burton, Young

Ugly: This board after a loss, a lot of embarrassing comments from the usual suspects.

Yes to all three. He started in back line and was really the only one running in the defense in the first quarter. Then had a couple of runs in ruck and a spell up forward all before half time. Didn't dominate but actually looked very comfortable in all three areas. This is huge for his potential to forge a career as he really isn't quite tall enough for ruck but if he keeps improving and having that level of workrate then he will play 200 games for us. Good work Jimmy.

have we fallen so low, we're crediting experienced players for trying.

what is this kindergarten? :p
Ordinarily I'd agree with you. However, Dougy was criticised last week for having virtually no impact in the game whatsoever. This week he was easily our best player in the first half, which is sad given that he was also our clanger king of the first half. Says a lot about the rest of the team that this is absolute truth.

Dougie wasn't bad, I agree. He showed plenty of intensity, and worked hard to make position, link up, and seemed to often be right at the foot of the stoppages. shame about the clangering.

however, I think there is a difference between showing intensity and everyone else not trying. by that standard, Dangerfield is the only player who tries each week ;)

Good
- Dangerfield
- Petrenko
- McKay

Bad
- Walker (needs to play out of the square!!! Watched Roughhead and Franklin do it all day today!)
- Players under done (Vince, Porps, Burton)
- McLeod being soft... I know he is not a hard ball winner, but I wish he would lay a tackle instead of bumping!!!

Ugly
- Our skills... No excuse for that
- Confidence
- Slow Ball movement
- Forward entry, the forwards have no hope because the midfielders don't penetrate far enough through the midfield to put pressure back on the defenders
- Douglas (needs to kick those goals)
- Edwards
- Burton
- No half forward line - PLay Hentschel at CHF and make him work is arse off like Riewolt etc Make him lead all day and give us that go to man.

I think Vince can handle the tag, and being under done and played out of position is more the reason for his form.

Good

- Dangerfield
- McLeod - especially his two goals
- Douglas at least tried his heart out.

Bad

- General skills
- No motivation or confidence
- Tiredness
- The Birdman and Hentschell
- No voice out on the field (as well as in the crowd)

Ugly

- The timeslot which resulted in a poor crowd.
- More injuries
