Good PC strategy games

What are some good medieval strategy games out there for pc. Not really interested in C&C or those type of games, more like Rome: Total War etc.

Does anyone know what some good ones are?

What's Civ 4 like? I haven't played any of those games, are the battles turn based or just the game and real time battles?

Civ4 doesn't have controllable battles, they are worked out automatically, hence the famous spearman-defeating-tank issues that you get with the series.

I have decided to go for a strategy game set during the 1600's (ish)

My recommendation would be to look for mods for the Total War Series.

Yeah Shogun total war is awesome. Also (if you didn't already know) Age of Empires. Everyone has played that though
