Possibly the most talented player I've seen, if not, top 3. The 2005 Aus Open semi final was arguably one of the most brilliant matches ever played with both Federer and Safin at their best.

One of the last of the great characters both on and off the court.

Thanks for the memories!

Yeah Marat, enjoy retirement, whatever you want to say about his results, he is still a two time grand slam champion.

Nice match to end as well, gave Del Potro a fight.

One of my favourite players. Very sad to see him retire at just 28 but he isn't up to it anymore. Cya.

The most talented player this decade.

2 grand slams does not reflect his true abilities as a player.

Should've had more glory if it weren't for his temperament, but that temperament (coupled with his charasmatic interviews) is what made him such a memorable player.

One of men's tennis brightest colours and he'll be missed no doubt.

2005 SF against Federer showcased what Marat could do against the best at his absolute best. Topping Hewitt in the final gave him the AO he thoroughly deserved.

absolute legend of the sport. his fleeting turn as world no.1 doesn't really show how good a player he's been over the years. along with agassi and ferrero, one of my three favourite players of my lifetime.

Im so going to miss Marat :(

there are few charaters left as anyone who tries to be one is chasised by fans and the meida

Agree completely with that final statement. I always thought that he could match Fed when they were both at their best and thankfully he did it in that semi final. My favourite player after Sampras retired, I always enjoyed watching his matches and the unbelieveable skill he possessed. Whenever he was playing at the Aus Open, I always made sure I watched his matches....and sat as close to his players box as possible ;)

Best.Player.Ever. (bias)

Is my favorite player after that 2005 Aus Open.

Will definitely miss him.

Great player, but so frustrating to support: he gave away so many matches from winning positions.

.

safin was awesome in hes prime but hes love for tennis just went and it was the right time for him to retire
still hes a legend

He is my fav tennis player of all time. Id say he is the best 193cm player that moved around the court like a mid sized player. Will be missed but the time was right.

Not really, most giants move like him now, Monfils is definitely one who's probably even more mobile than Safin for sure. However he was probably the first big tall guy that moved like a 180cm player.
