Did Carey play bad?

From what I heard of the game the commentators here said he was playing okay.

Not saying Carey played bad in fact he has been one of the leading lights all season.

But next year could be a different story another year older, another grueling pre-season & those aching bones telling him to have a rethink.

Would not like to see Wayne Carey go 1 year too many & end up in Nigel's present position.

Carey has always been one of my favorites, and I'd like to see him play on next year - but I don't think he should.

A player like him, doesn't deserve to go out the way that Smart will be.

Not that Smart really deserves it either, after the career that he has had..

noddy, at this stage there is a significant difference between Smart's and Carey's situation. Last year Smart was blowing hot and cold. His second half of the year was very ordinary and he would have been dropped if not for his testimonal game which he started on the bench and didn't come on until just bfeor half time. Smart was struggling last year.

Carey so far has been playing the best footy he has for the AFC. There is still 11 games left in the season. If Carey falls away in the second half of the year then I would say he needs to retire. If he continues playing as well as he is ATM then I would leave the decision up to him.

I was one of only a handful of posters who wanted Smart to retire with Bicks. From memory, Jerome was another one and I think macca23 was also of this opinion.

Nigel had a pretty good patch last year & only lost a bit of form in the latter part of 03 but he wasn't a bloody orphan in that regard.

Agree Cary is playing in the best form since he came to the club & hopefully can continue on for the rest of the year & the choice to retire or not will be his decision to make.

I was one poster who wanted Nigel to go on this year & have since changed my mind, a players own body will tell him when it's time to hang up the boots just a matter of listening to the right signals.

See St Kilda ;)
True but St Kilda had/have the likes of Lowe, Harvey, Burke, Thompson and a few other experinced campaigners to guide those youngsters. Lowe went a year too long so he could take th heat of the likes of Kosi and Reiwoldt.

We can't just throw 22 youngsters in the deep end and hope they swim. You need an experinced campainger through every line on the field. Otherwise the rebuilding would be far more painfull than neccessary.

Besides, I couldn't handle that long as the cellar dwellers. It's only halfway through this season and it's already too much :p

At least Stiffy. Ideally 2 on each line so that they can teach and support the youngster on their line.

It would be very painful without any wise heads to help them.

Thats really the point I was trying to make. You need experienced wise heads around youngsters otherwise you are in serious strife and it will take two times longer to rebuild than it should.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread so I hope Im not repeating anything but I was at the North v South game last week and Ladhams tore shreads out of Smart, Smart did pick up a few soft touches in the 2nd half when the game was over but he wouldn't have been in South's best dozen players.

Going on this theory I'd expect to see Biglands in the Crows Guernsey this week as he wasn't in the Eagles best dozen players today. In fact Chris Ladhams outmarked and outboddied him in one contest and Ray Ebel who is about a foot shorter than Biglands kicked his butt.
