I remember watching it as a kid and still love it to this day.

Another great film I love is Carlito's way with Pacino, anyone seen it?

Yeah seen Carlito's way. Didn't affect me like me Goodfellas did. Pulled it out the other day. What a brilliant film.

Goodfellas was based on real people. Carlito's Way was a gangster shoot em up. With blood galore.
It was good, but Goodfellas rang true and that's because most of it was.It was about Henry Hill.
That's why it can effect you .
You wonder how these guys live that life , but in Carlito every one got shot about a hundred times and still kept shooting .
One fictional movie that told the story well of a time in history, was Unforgiven, somewhat about real life then.

The shoot out in the end may have looked a bit far fetched , but Eastwood directed brilliantly , and if a pack of amateur locals and lawmen faced down a stone cold vengeful killer like Billy Muny (money /muney??) after he'd blown Little Bills head off, then panic would have ensued and the killer just slowly aimed and killed, calmly and brutally as it may have been in those times .
Those types are psychopathic, they have no love or hate only anger when they kill. And probably no fear.
Because he loved his two kids hey? And he loved his mate the black gunman who went with him.

Now for any film buff on here I have a question , its not historical , but, in the movie Tombstone, I reckon there is an undercurrent of homosexuality between Doc Holiday and John Ringo. Who appeared to hate each other. What do you think?

I think you are a fanook for asking that in a goodfellas thread.

Yeah I need to toughen up. But just a couple of things in the script , there's something added .
Now Sulla, a very violent but brilliant Roman general and leader was very tough too, and very gay.
And Caesar was lucky, as a younger Roman to survive Sulla.

Goodfellas is a great movie, but the way most guys worship it has sort of ruined it for me. Every male under the age of 30 will tell you how its the greatest movie of all time and it got robbed by Dances With Wolves, even though DWW is an awesome movie in its own right, that broke a ton of ground, and deserved all the Oscars it won.

I like it a lot but it's not even Scorsese's best.

I think you are a fanook for asking that in a goodfellas thread.

Remember when Wyatt asked Holiday why was he so hate filled, what made him hate so badly and he said
"being born". Now for me and the times its just part of the story that had other things going on , it may be bullshit but there is some undercurrent because Ringo was a stone cold foul tempered murderer too.
In the Movie.
I read some history on this fellow, in real life historians are not even sure he ever killed anyone, Ringo that is.
John Holliday on the other hand was a tried and true gambler and killer. and drunkard and a dentist. Ha.

Magnificent movie. Always loved it.

Having said that, Dances With Wolves cannot simply be dismissed. That was brilliant too. My wife had to teach Dances With Wolves recently and I sat and watched it again. Just brilliant.

Obviously How Green was my Valley is a better example of the Academy getting it wrong - over Citizen Kane.

Or Rocky over Taxi Driver.

It's funny that this thread was bumped.

I just read through it and realised I got angry about some other guys' opinions.

I reckon I have chillaxed since then.

It's great but probably prefer Casino, might be because I seen that first though.

Casino was also a masterpiece, but Goodfellas was something else.

Another take-home from this thread for me is that I really need to watch Dances with Wolves. Always just bracketed this in with the other piles of sh1t Costner produced so never bothered watching it, but it seems it may be decent after all.

Goodfellas was a great movie - one of my faves and even better it meant we got The Sopranos. That said I still think Dances With Wolves was a worthy winner and possibly one of the greatest movies ever made.

Good to see mentions of Casino - Carlitos Way and Unforgiven in this thread. All superb movies. I reckon I have seen all five movies over a dozen times each and never get bored.
