Been in supreme touch this year. Becomes eligible to play for Australia next year (I believe). Would only get a shot if there were injuries, but he would be an excellent fill-in given his test experience (and quite a record too). By the time he's eligible he'll be 31.

If he maintained his form, he would have to be up there with Love, Hodge and co in the mix for a spot. What do you think about his chances?

No point selecting a then 32 year old when you've got younger guys at a similar level (Hodge, Love).

Rather go for a home-grown talent anyway.

Has disappointed in the last game against Victoria when he was given the captaincy, with a couple of ordinary innings - which is a bit of a shame considering the form he was in.

I tend to agree with P&P in that there are better and younger local talent around anyway. Probably should have played for Aus A against India though.

It's interesting to see the talent that Zimbabwe does produce, they've got a few real class batsmen in the Flower brothers, Goodwin, Campbell, Wishart, etc etc etc....... if not for the political sh*t they would've been a pretty competitive team.

Goodwin has done extremely well to average low 40s in Tests, given that they were all against better sides and he never got to face the ****-weak Zimbo attack (or Bangladesh for that matter).

His First Class record is also excellent, but he only averages 38 (career) in the Pura Cup, which are the performances he'll most likely be judged on.

I'd expect Clarke, Katich, Lehmann and Love to still be well ahead of him in the pecking order when he becomes eligible to play for Australia (with Waugh and possibly Martyn gone).

Goodwin is an excellent player, and if in the Australian team, i reckon he'd do a very good job. Averaging 42-ish in the Zimbo tes team, is probably 48-50 in the Australian team. maybe even higher.

Goodwin is a 'home-grown' talent. He was a youngster when he moved here with his family and he went through the Australian system, including AIS and being part of the Australian Under-19 squad (no matches where played during his time, so no team accolades).

However he realised that he was probably never going to make it as an Aussie cricketer and decided to play for Zimbabwe, despite the fact he didn't even have residency rights there. If he was to play cricket for Australia (still unlikely) it would be a great irony.

Murray Goodwin has said that he would love to play for Australia when he becomes eligible to do so in seven months.

Goodwin was born in Harare, but moved to Australia when he was 13, only returning to Zimbabwe in 1997 to pursue an international career in which he played 19 Tests and 71 ODIs. But at the end of Zimbabwe's tour of England in 2000 he announced that he was quitting international cricket and he moved back to Perth, resuming a career with Western Australia which had started in 1996-97.

Under International Cricket Council rules, a player cannot be selected by a country if he has represented another nation in the preceding four years. Goodwin's last appearance for Zimbabwe was the NatWest Series final against England at Lord's on July 22, 2000.

"The thought of playing international cricket again keeps me going," Goodwin told the Western Australian newspaper. "I set myself pretty high standards and if I can keep performing well for WA, who knows down the line? It would be great to play for Australia. All I can do is just make runs and leave it up to the selectors.

"Playing for Australia is a way off. Even though I'm a naturalised Australian I can't play until after this season. Even then I'd be 31 and whether they look at me is another story. But I'd love to play for Australia. It would be awesome.

"I want to keep playing for WA as long as I'm good enough to play and they want me."

You left out Clarke, who will probably be on the team before Hodge even gets a look in. I'm sure Love will go in for Waugh, but Clarke will be selected on the tour to Sri Lanka in case someone fails. As for Goodwin, I'm sure the selectors will not go down that path.

Perhaps he was just talking about players who manage to have an average a bit better than the mid 30s?

I listed comparable players, both by age and first class record.

Clarke is significantly younger, with a weaker record.
