About Time we appointed the right man
BASKETBALL
Goorjian the new Boomers coach
By STEPHEN HOWELL
Tuesday 30 October 2001
Victoria Titans coach Brian Goorjian will be named coach of the national men's team, the Boomers, this week.
Negotiations between Goorjian and Basketball Australia began last week after phone interviews with contenders the previous week. They included a secret meeting in Melbourne last week, as reported in The Age.
Issues raised at the meeting attended by Basketball Australia chief Scott Derwin and new national team manager Lorraine Landon, and Goorjian and his wife/manager Amanda Gilbert, have been resolved and the parties are believed to have agreed to conditions to give the national coach a greater input into developing young players through junior national teams.
American-born Goorjian, 48, is naturalised. He has been in Australia since 1977 and has had the most wins of any coach in the National Basketball League. That mark (283) came last season and last Saturday, he had his 301st win with the Titans' victory over the Crocodiles in Townsville.
Tomorrow is Victoria's rest day, so that is the obvious date for the announcement, expected to be in Sydney.

Basketball Australia and Goorjian have discussed potential assistant coaches. The Age has reported that Brett Brown of Sydney Kings will be one. The other will come from head-coaching applicants Alan Black (Perth Wildcats), Brendan Joyce (Wollongong Hawks) and Ian Stacker (Townsville Crocodiles), with Cairns Taipans' Guy Molloy an outside chance.
Phil Smyth (Adelaide 36ers) replaced Barry Barnes early this year, but Smyth fell on his sword when the Boomers lost their world title qualifying series to New Zealand last month.
