Goorjian the new Boomers coach

By STEPHEN HOWELL
Tuesday 30 October 2001

Victoria Titans coach Brian Goorjian will be named coach of the national men's team, the Boomers, this week.

Negotiations between Goorjian and Basketball Australia began last week after phone interviews with contenders the previous week. They included a secret meeting in Melbourne last week, as reported in The Age.

Issues raised at the meeting attended by Basketball Australia chief Scott Derwin and new national team manager Lorraine Landon, and Goorjian and his wife/manager Amanda Gilbert, have been resolved and the parties are believed to have agreed to conditions to give the national coach a greater input into developing young players through junior national teams.

American-born Goorjian, 48, is naturalised. He has been in Australia since 1977 and has had the most wins of any coach in the National Basketball League. That mark (283) came last season and last Saturday, he had his 301st win with the Titans' victory over the Crocodiles in Townsville.

Tomorrow is Victoria's rest day, so that is the obvious date for the announcement, expected to be in Sydney.

Basketball Australia and Goorjian have discussed potential assistant coaches. The Age has reported that Brett Brown of Sydney Kings will be one. The other will come from head-coaching applicants Alan Black (Perth Wildcats), Brendan Joyce (Wollongong Hawks) and Ian Stacker (Townsville Crocodiles), with Cairns Taipans' Guy Molloy an outside chance.

Phil Smyth (Adelaide 36ers) replaced Barry Barnes early this year, but Smyth fell on his sword when the Boomers lost their world title qualifying series to New Zealand last month.

its a typical eastern states decision ! He was given no time to have them get used to his coaching, it stinks and I know I am not the only person in Adelaide hoping the boomers keep losing ! f*** the eastern states i say !

LOL, how accurate Easty!! Why does everyone say you're such ****head??

Well said Easty
Goorjians a c***munch Give the job back to Lindsay :)

Goorjian is a **** talking, arrogant ********

We can now expect a Boomers side that is not only boring to watch but are chokers. I can feel a few second places coming up for the Boomers.

How long will it be before the supposed power the Titans win a premiership. Up there every year until the choke comes.

Exactly Jod. I'd rather choke to the U.S. and come second than do what we usually do - underachieve.

And Jod, you have now got me to the basketball board... ;)

I didn't really think that one through and I let my hate of the Titans get the better of me. I should have asid I can feel a few chokes coming on

Hey Bulldogs1954
Hate to be rude but don't the Bulldogs have a reputation like the Titans for 'choking' come finals time
You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk

From one Angry Titan Fan
I respect and revere Goorjian and all's done for Aussie Basketball so i didn't take your comments lightly
That said i was only joking with my comments so don't misconstrue them as an attack on the bulldogs FC (even though on the surface, it probably is) it was just *** for tat.
Cheers

goorjian came out mouthing off when the merger went ahead saying that it is a "dream team" but since that this self proffessed dream team have only choked especially last year against adelaide when they had home court advantage !

Lose boomers lose ! ......heres hoping !

Lose boomers lose ! ......heres hoping !

That's a great attitude to have coming from an Australian. No wonder aussie's like Kewell and Viduka are reluctant to play for us when we have people like you Easty hoping we lose because you don't like the coach.
For your information i never like Phollish Phil Smyth but i never stopped supporting our boys. Gee Whiz Easty.

Aaah lovely to see the most arrogant man to walk this planet has got Australias top basketball job.

Anybody remember when despite the merger he kept wearing black. What a ****er. I hope one day somebody flattens him when he does his usual cheating trick of walking on the court.

The Bulldogs do have that reputation, but the AFL hasn't just appointed Wallace national coach.

And being a Tigers fan I feel its only fair that I remind you of round one :D :D :) :)

Now, now, Loz. You've gotta remember he's from South Australia, and as everyone knows, Tasmanians are living proof that South Australians can swim. :D

Heal back for Boomers

By STEPHEN HOWELL
Thursday 1 November 2001

Basketball Australia added lustre to its announcement yesterday that Brian Goorjian of the Victoria Titans is the new Boomers coach by naming Brett Brown (Sydney Kings) and Brendan Joyce (Wollongong Hawks) as his assistants with the national team.

But the big news is what was not announced at the press conference in Sydney - the certain return of retired point guard Shane Heal as one of the Boomers' leaders under the Goorjian coaching team.

Heal, 31, did not say publicly he would come back. But he said: "I think that's a good crew. For me it's a positive thing, to look over and see the coaching staff walking the sidelines with passion, instructions and inspiration.

"They're the sort of coaches I respond to and enjoy playing under. If there's any situation you'd come back to, it's this one."

Goorjian, who takes on the Boomers job in addition to coaching in the National Basketball League, said: "I've got an open mind to Shane. I'd not beg but, obviously, Shane's in the prime of his career and he's one of the top players in the country."

Basketball Australia's chief executive, Scott Derwin, admitted that he rang Heal on Tuesday night to tell him of Goorjian's appointment and that he would be welcomed back if selected.

Triple-Olympian Heal was one of a raft of retirees from the Boomers after the Sydney Games.

He said the reasons were to have ankle surgery, concentrate on the Kings and to spend time with his young family.

But there is no doubt a cool relationship between Heal and Phil Smyth, who in January was appointed to replace Barry Barnes as head coach, was a factor.

Goorjian replacing Smyth was a fait accompli after the Boomers' recent loss to New Zealand in their qualifying tournament for next year's world championships.

While many see the new appointment as an admission by Basketball Australia that it made the wrong choice earlier this year, Derwin said only that "Phil and Brian were very, very close (in the contest) and we went Phil's way for what we believed were the right reasons. Now it's time to move on".

Goorjian, 48, is the first American-born coach of the men's national team. He is naturalised.

He has the job until the Athens Olympics in August 2004 - provided his team qualifies by beating New Zealand in 2003.

Another international retiree, Melbourne Tigers centre and four-time Olympian Mark Bradtke, is also likely to be asked to make himself available for one more campaign as the coaches seek veteran leadership to go with their rebuilding.

What of Frank Drmic, 23, a Goorjian protege and now coached by Brown in Sydney, but not in Smyth's Boomers squad?

"A lot of young guys had either the disappointment of New Zealand or not making the national team," Goorjian said. "I'd hope this group would be really hungry. I see Frank Drmic in that light: hungry and eager."

The coaching appointment has intensified Titan Jason Smith's desire to recover fully from knee surgery to play in his second Olympics.

"There's no better time for him to be appointed," Smith, 27, said. "Basketball's in a bit of a hole right now, and he's the man to hold the shovel and dig us out.

"(Off-court) he's the man to promote the Boomers and the national program, and with coaching there's none better. His record speaks for that. I want to be in that team."

Titans chief executive Ned Coten said Goorjian had his organisation's full support.

And how does Goorjian feel about his new job? "The national team program is crucial to Australian basketball, and I am excited and proud to have been entrusted with this role," he said.

Maybe Lindsay would have more wins if he had 4 teams to select his side from

The Titans are a combination of the Spectres, Saints, Magic and Giants aren't they? And still they have no titles. Thats pretty sad. Maybe they'll have to merge again

Since when have the Titans followed the salary cap? Goorjians spent a lifetime cheating the salary cap

And If we merged and got D-Mac we would have won every title since 96 :) :)

LOL ... but then if you had Copeland, Gaze and D-Mac your average age for your guards would be 97! HEHEHEHE

FE, i love the Tigers/Titans rivalry, its whats lacking in alot of the other games .... must admit the magic/Tigers rivalry seemed to be more intense ..... any way Melbourne is TITANTOWN!
