Not trying to bag Norman, but Pat has a much better record in Grand Slam finals, 2-2 (i think?) than Norman has of losing winning positions in golf grand slams..

Jus checking :) Cos Norman isnt only a legend of the game but he is an ambassador for our Country. I would have loved to see the Tiger v the Shark when Norman was in his prime, would have been an awesome spectacle.

Just on Norman, apart from losing a 6 shot lead at the 96 Masters, a few times he's lost majors through some bad luck, which he had no control over. Larry Mize's chip in and Bob Tway's fluke chip both conspired to rob Norman of Majors through no fault of his own.

I'll bag Norman.
Yes, he's a good golfer, but even Baker-Finch won a British Open. Ambassador, I think not. The only thing he'll act as an ambassador for is whatever he's being paid to promote.
I do think it's a pity he'll be remembered for choking more than anything, but when you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Cliche count =1

Norman, has a bigger choke than my old mans HQ!

Rafter, stiff. To think Goran (try though he did in that last game) actually didnt throw it away!

Good luck to them both, entertaing game rather than a great one (Borg vs Tanner, Borg vs McEnroe x2) were awesome games.

Santos, John Mac may have wiped them both, Pistol Pete circa mid ninties would have wiped Makerow, easy.

Sampras at his best, greatest grass court player ive seen.

The atmosphere was incredible, the game was so exciting. I desperately wanted Pat to win, and then when Goran went into serve self-destruction in that final game I wanted to kick the telly over, it was SO frustrating!!!!!!! But in the end, I couldn't help but be happy for Goran, he was just so genuinely thrilled to have won. :) And Pat, what a freakin champion. He handled himself so brilliantly even though it was plain to see he just wanted to get the hell off the court. Pat we're all proud of you, you're a champion in every sense of the word. :) AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI!!!!!!!!!! :D lol

Sampras IMHO would probably be the greatest tennis player of all time if he could only win on clay. His record on clay isnt very good and he has never won a French Open. He doesnt have the elusive career Grand Slam. Agassi has got it as has many many other players but i think that French Open win is the thing that still drives Pete on. He will never be the greatest unless he gets that FO win off his back.

Even if Pistol does win the French (and I'd love to see him do it) you would be a brave man to rate him as the 'greatest of all time'. A red haired Queenslander named Rod will always have that title in my book.

If Sampras get a French Open there should be no doubt that he is the greatest ever. Laver was awesome and you may be a little bias because he is an aussie but Sampras has more Grand Slam victories and if he gets a French then he will have the highest honour on all surfaces.

But all this is speculation until he gets that French Open.

err ... 'no doubt that he is the greatest ever'? I think not. More Grand Slam ***les he may have but let's not forget Laver record at Wimbledon was runner up, runner up, win, win, wasn't allowed to play there for five years, then when they changed the rules he came back and won two more straight away. The fact that he has won two Grand Slams and is the only man ever to do it shows the dominance he had over the sport. People rave over Ag***i's 'career Grand Slam' but forget that Laver did it in a calender year ... twice.

He was playing top spin backhands at a time when no-one else did and if it wasn't for the rules regarding professionalism would have won many more ***les than Emerson or Sampras.

Bloke called Bill Tilden, big serving Texan from the thirtys. First 'slam' winner I think from memory. Turned pro in the days when there really was bugger (will get to that ref in a minute) all money. Then WW2 intervened in his career. Was involved in some form of scandal over his sexual preferences (hence the ref). I think he died in poor circumstances and his career wasnt duly regocnised as it should have been. Was the player of his generation, and no doubt one of (if not) the best ever.

Yep Big Bill. Won 3 Wimbledons, 7 US Opens, runner up at the French twice and had a great Davis Cup record as well. Of course that was in the days when the US players cared about Davis Cup. Ended up in jail over that scandal involving a young man. He wrote a book named 'The Art of Lawn Tennis' that was considered to be an authority on the game and plenty of it is still relevant.

If it's all the same to you though Grendel I'll stick with Rocket ;)

Oh, and first Slam winner? Wasn't that Don Budge?

I agree with you that Laver is the greatest now...

Sampras is still playing and already has more Grand Slam ***les than any other male tennis player in history. If he continues to play for another couple of years theres no telling how many he could end up with.

For now i will stick with Laver but if Sampras can win another couple in the twilight of his career including that elusive French Open then there should be no doubt.
