Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

Pffffffffffffffftttttttt Letcher couldnt fight his way out of a paper bag!!!

Haha.

A bit from The Age today;

SEPTEMBER is a month when rivalries boil over. Such was the case in the Goulburn Valley League finals on Sunday between two of the state’s most intense rivals, Echuca and Rochester.

The clubs, linked by the Campaspe River in northern Victoria, have been at each other’s throats since day one. The Echuca Football Club was formed in 1872. Rochester was formed two years later for the express purpose of beating Echuca. The rivalry has remained undimmed for more than a century. When former St Kilda coach Ken Sheldon expressed shock at the abuse that was showered on him during his debut as Echuca coach during the opening round of the 2000 season, Rochester coach David Williams said simply that the Tigers supporters were excited after unfurling their flag.

Williams, the former Melbourne forward, this year left Rochester after 16 seasons and now coaches Kyabram. His Rochester replacement, Daniel Schmidt, guided the Tigers to two comfortable wins over Echuca during the home-and-away season and his team was strongly favoured before Sunday’s elimination final.

The match was tough but without spite until Rochester’s Steve Rasmussen was driven into the ground on the wing during the final seconds of the third quarter. During the subsequent push and shove, the umpires failed to blow time-on. The siren blew as players remonstrated and a couple of them traded blows. One of the great things about local footy is that supporters can wander on to the ground during breaks, usually to listen to a coach’s address. But on this occasion, several dozen supporters wandered into the fracas. Fans abused each other and players until officials became worried that a brawl would erupt. Rochester president Darren Gledhill, on seeing members of his committee hurl insults Echuca’s way, rounded up Tigers supporters and herded them from the ground. Echuca officials did the same. Both clubs later reported that no punches were thrown among supporters and no players were hurt.

The match proceeded in reasonable spirits in the last quarter before Rochester scored a comfortable victory, with veteran forward Anthony McPhee kicking six goals in his 409th game. The latest blow in a torrid rivalry had gone to the Tigers.

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

I believe 6 under 18s played in the 2s and 2 in the 1s on Saturday, there are a couple of the under 18s with season ending injuries as well, the lions will lose Haberman and possibly Robbie Inness from the side that played last, but on the up side could just be a couple of guys not expected to play again this season make a play for spots over the next two weeks could realy be a big lift to the lions boys if this is so, big names

I'd love to bottle the culture of the Lions-just keep coming up with the goods!! Little Bernie might further inspire and pull on the boots v Rochy

Yeah and goes to a side that finished second last, last year and takes them to the finals in his first year. His record speaks for itself no matter what anyones opinion is of him.

Anyone who questions the man's playing or coaching abillity in country footy has to question wether their making an informed honest comment or just talking shit. :thumbsu:
His only sin was he did it at Rochester.;)

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

Don't worry mate, Watson will play this week no doubt.

Good news for Ash but still cant believe he got off. Rochy supporters pencilled in 2 weeks holiday when it all happened last week. Umpires case was suspect or very good work in defending him?
I still question how in an "all in brawl" only this report?

That just shows the high quality of umpires we have in the GV. None of them can control a game, and the others that think they can are only stuffing a game up with their power hungry attitudes.

Just do your jobs!

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

They need to give the local boys a better go:thumbsu:,COZ spending heaps of money hasn't worked:thumbsd: ..

It's hard to say, maybe they won't all come back next year. Swans thirds made the finals this year, so maybe they will be looking to those guys in the future.

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

well done to Seymour as 14 points down at 10 minute mark of last quarter. I reckon the outcome has been the same for Rochy every game against Seymour this year as very close into the last quarter and then just get run over. Basically 5 goals to nought in the last 12 minutes, and as stated great effort by Seymour to be going for their fourth in a row. You have to be in it to win it.
Will be an absolute cracker next week with Mooroopna and Rochy playing for a grand final spot.

I reckon I left Tatura today with a new found admiration (if that's possible) of this current group of Lions. Rochy did everything in their power to have the game under control, midfield was working well, forwards creating headaches and their defence was solid, but they just couldn't deliver the knockout punch - enter Scanlon, Brendan Liddell and co and against the tide the Lion's won through to another season decider.

Hats off them I say :thumbsu:

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

Great win by the lions yesterday. Rochy really stuck it to them for 3 quarters but couldnt quite hold on. Did admire the way they stuck to there game play of holding on the the pill and only kicking short, nearly paid off!

Great second halves by a few of the lions in particular saas saad, van riet and scanlon and good to see there young blokes in cole and groves have good games as well.

looking forward to grand final week as regardless of who wins this week should be a cracker of a game:)
