A good reason to smile
Euroa's difficult off-season has been tempered somewhat with news livewire Northern Territory recruit Relton Roberts is a confirmed starter for the Magpies in this Goulburn Valley Football League season.
And there could be more good news on the horizon with the possibility of another couple of players from the NT joining him at Euroa.
Club president John Ivill yesterday said he was heading up to Darwin on February 14 to ``cross the Ts and dot the Is'' on Roberts' paperwork and was hoping to look for other potential recruits while there.
Roberts took the league by storm in his first season last year, his blistering speed and finishing skills helping win him selection in the Goulburn Valley representative side and later the Victorian team for the Australian Country Championships.
Ivill yesterday said it was great news for the club to be able to secure Roberts' services for next season.
``It was a bit up in the air as far as he'd been in the training squad for the Northern Territory side which is going into the Queensland league (QAFL) next year,'' Ivill said.
``But he's been able to secure employment here.''
Roberts will work for the Academy of Sport Health and Education supporting youngsters in his community. He is expected to be joined by a couple of other Territorians at ASHE, however, it is unknown whether they will be senior footballers.
Euroa was dealt a huge blow before Christmas when century goal-kicker Mark Jansz, prolific ball-winning midfielders Shane Clayton and Hayden Lamaro as well as Scott Grainger and Damon Clarke all announced they were not returning this season.
``This (Roberts returning) is a bit of good news,'' Ivill said.
Ivill said while there were no other recruits confirmed for there were a number of ``irons in the fire'' he hoped would lead to signings.

Bernie's confident Saad will roar again
Seymour coach Bernie Haberman is confident enigmatic forward Saad Saad will again line-up for the Lions this Goulburn Valley Football League season.
Saad, 26, has been training with Bendigo Bombers since late last year, but has not officially signed for the VFL side.
All-Australian midfielder and Saad's former Seymour teammate Paul Scanlon has already joined the Bombers.
However, Haberman believes Saad will remain at Kings Park for a fifth straight season.
Saad trained with Collingwood last summer, but chose to play with Seymour.
``I'm confident he'll stay at Seymour. He was training with Collingwood before the start of last season, but decided to play with us,'' Haberman said.
``He usually doesn't sign anything until just before the start of the season so we'll just have to wait and see, but personally I think he'll stick around for another season.
```Chewy' (Scanlon) will make Seymour his second club, so he'll play a few games for us when Bendigo has a bye or whatever.''
Saad joined Seymour in 2005 and Scanlon in 2006 from VFL side Northern Bullants and both dominated the GVFL in the Lions' premiership sides from 2005-07.
Haberman said apart from Scanlon, Rodney van Riet was Seymour's only other departure to another club.
Van Riet will play with Aberfeldie in the Essendon District league this season.
Robbie Inness, Matt O'Keefe and Luke Stevenson are travelling overseas and will not play for the Lions.
If I was referring to Guy Campbell I would have used him as an example. I was saying that Brodie has made a good decision about his football future by not letting figures get in the way of dreams and ambitions. I think you will find that Guy has some close connections with Rochester as well. I am not saying that he will play for nothing and nor should he be expected to either.
Some connections:
*Rochester captain goes out with his sister
*Played at the Diggers with no less than three current Rochester players (including the coach).
I take your point boys but!!! He also had friends/people he has played with at Echuca over the years.. Also he did play in a premiership at Echuca. He had many reasons to stay unfortuanetly Loyaty wasn't in his thoughts. I also understand he wouldn't have played for nothing at Echuca and i wouldn't expect he should play for nothing anywhere when you are that good. From a personal point of view he's a big loss and the fact he has played at a number of clubs in the area as you stated i think i'm entitled to think he plays for more than just playing with mates/friends etc.
Probably didnt help getting dropped for the finals either I would suggest from last year. Also heard Rourkey has recruited quite a few from QAFL and SA ( up to 7 senior players) to Ainslie for next year so may have been fringe by the sounds of it.
van riet , o'keffe,scanlon innes and stevenson and possibly saad would make a pretty big hole into seymours side , how are the lions travelling in the recruiting department?
good old john ivill would want to find some serious talent on his trip to darwin to cover the losses of janz lamaro clayton and co !
Now thats better Digger!!:thumbsu:
From all reports struggled down in Geelong last year and is rising 37.
Dont think he had that bad a year. Will be very good sitting in the square because he is still not going to be outmarked.
Mansfield have been a little bit quiet but there will still be a few more names to come.
ins - Mensch, Gieshen, Hart?(royce harts son) maybe,
outs - Trewellha ( South Barwon ), Fagen (Box Hill), M. Jones, Monohan, Mahoney (overseas), Leitch (Q'land)?,
Could be more cant think at the moment
Had an interesting conversation with a ex, (new) Echuca player which to say the least brought common sense to Echuca's situation in 09.
He remindered me of years ago when a number of players in their 30's, who weren't likely of playing in a flag with the club, left the club in bid for a premiership, and forced the club to look to their juniors who incidently went on to be premiership players through the glory years of 2001 etc. etc.
The most notable things he reminded me of was the grace and best wishes that those players left with and the support given by those people since, and also the support given to the new brigade back then of older retired players, who came out of retirement, to maintain the club.
The final scenario of all this appears to be the rumoured return to the playing arena of those premiership players who benefited from the previous support given to them.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:
The next premiership is being baked and with good juniors coming through and every indication some stars will return in the next 12 months the future looks bright:thumbsu: PTF have you got any names?
Older players returning to help the club out in the reserves , which I've heard pellogrino, gray, eddy, o'brien, orr.
Just hope bridges aren't burnt between the club and players leaving , as that generally is the difference between building a sucessfull era and not. Nothing impresses prospective recruits more than when ex players recommend a club !!
Walkabout Pub in Shephard's Bush last night for Australia day - bugger me, if there isn't 3 blokes walking around in Seymour FC premiership jerseys. Good to see. Better to see were the flock of women trying to touch number 15's triceps. Extraordinary!
A good effort by these blokes and don't know how they will fair on the ground but they have gone on to become the powerhouse of the business district in Echuca from what I have been told.
Maybe if they get best on ground they have to pay for the awards that week.............think about it. lol
Smart move to keep them involved and great to see the loyalty shining through.......you didn't see that at Tat after all their flags in the 90's!
Some clubs are looking at early morning or later starting times, shortened sessions, pool or indoor sessions, would be pointless for clubs to flog the guts out of players, especially guys who have jobs where they are out in the heat as well?
I think the only bridges burnt were burnt by some players going to a particular club who were lured by $$$. Those players had the chance to stay but decided to play minor league football. The morale from what i hear is very good and there are more signings to come.
