A good reason to smile
Euroa's difficult off-season has been tempered somewhat with news livewire Northern Territory recruit Relton Roberts is a confirmed starter for the Magpies in this Goulburn Valley Football League season.
And there could be more good news on the horizon with the possibility of another couple of players from the NT joining him at Euroa.
Club president John Ivill yesterday said he was heading up to Darwin on February 14 to ``cross the Ts and dot the Is'' on Roberts' paperwork and was hoping to look for other potential recruits while there.
Roberts took the league by storm in his first season last year, his blistering speed and finishing skills helping win him selection in the Goulburn Valley representative side and later the Victorian team for the Australian Country Championships.
Ivill yesterday said it was great news for the club to be able to secure Roberts' services for next season.
``It was a bit up in the air as far as he'd been in the training squad for the Northern Territory side which is going into the Queensland league (QAFL) next year,'' Ivill said.
``But he's been able to secure employment here.''
Roberts will work for the Academy of Sport Health and Education supporting youngsters in his community. He is expected to be joined by a couple of other Territorians at ASHE, however, it is unknown whether they will be senior footballers.
Euroa was dealt a huge blow before Christmas when century goal-kicker Mark Jansz, prolific ball-winning midfielders Shane Clayton and Hayden Lamaro as well as Scott Grainger and Damon Clarke all announced they were not returning this season.
``This (Roberts returning) is a bit of good news,'' Ivill said.
Ivill said while there were no other recruits confirmed for there were a number of ``irons in the fire'' he hoped would lead to signings.
Bernie's confident Saad will roar again
Seymour coach Bernie Haberman is confident enigmatic forward Saad Saad will again line-up for the Lions this Goulburn Valley Football League season.
Saad, 26, has been training with Bendigo Bombers since late last year, but has not officially signed for the VFL side.
All-Australian midfielder and Saad's former Seymour teammate Paul Scanlon has already joined the Bombers.
However, Haberman believes Saad will remain at Kings Park for a fifth straight season.
Saad trained with Collingwood last summer, but chose to play with Seymour.
``I'm confident he'll stay at Seymour. He was training with Collingwood before the start of last season, but decided to play with us,'' Haberman said.
``He usually doesn't sign anything until just before the start of the season so we'll just have to wait and see, but personally I think he'll stick around for another season.
```Chewy' (Scanlon) will make Seymour his second club, so he'll play a few games for us when Bendigo has a bye or whatever.''
Saad joined Seymour in 2005 and Scanlon in 2006 from VFL side Northern Bullants and both dominated the GVFL in the Lions' premiership sides from 2005-07.
Haberman said apart from Scanlon, Rodney van Riet was Seymour's only other departure to another club.
Van Riet will play with Aberfeldie in the Essendon District league this season.
Robbie Inness, Matt O'Keefe and Luke Stevenson are travelling overseas and will not play for the Lions.
