Anyone here got gout? I first got it when I was 19. Shits not fun and can **** your working life up.

People think it's a joke for whatever reason. It's painful as ****.

Got any tips for getting rid of it quickly once it comes?

Any others with gout?

My dad has had it for years, seems pretty painful, he's been taking medication for it though as long as I can remember. It hasn't seemed to affect him too much though as his job is pretty physical and he hasn't slowed down much.

The doctors have been hesitant to put me on the everyday medication because I'm young. They're hoping it will go away with me keeping an eye on my diet.

AKA giving up drinking and eating **** all red meat.

I've got meds which I take when it sets in but they take a couple days to get rid of it.

For all the times I have heard about gout, I've never really known what it was.

Off to wikipedia now.

Well if you want to give yourself the best possible chance of prevention then make the necessary lifestyle changes. I know it's not all about diet and alcohol intake, but it plays a major part in many cases.

As a proud bogan I could never give up alcohol and BBQ's. It's too far ingrained into my life.

Auto immune diseases suck.

Most seafood is okay but avoid shellfish, any food that is rich with purines could induce attacks and the worst offenders when it comes to alcohol are beer and red wine.

Caused by high Uric Acid which crystalizes in your joints.Imagine having hot crushed glass in a joint.
You have to have abnormally high Uric Acid to start with, can be hereditary.
Foods that make it worse Red meat, shellfish, anything spicy, red wine, tomatoes & broccoli.
Alcohol makes it worse due to making you dehydrated.
You can treat each attack with drugs like Indomethicin, which can affect your liver
Or take a daily tablet of Allopurinol
Serious pain killers are sometimes needed.

I have broken most bones in my body over the years (motorbikes/footy), have dislocated a hip twice in one accident (out-in-out), had a squashed testicle which swelled to the size of an orange and dented a steel petrol tank, crushed and fractured three vertebraes falling from height and cut off my little toe with a petrol driven demo saw......

Nothing, I repeat nothing has ever come close to the pain I have felt through gout, as one poster said it feels like crushed glass around your big toe joint, every movement cuts through soft tissue, actually if I have my foot up with gout, simply placing a tissue on it would be unbearable. The first time I got it was just after motorbike riding and I was positive that I had somehow smashed the bone into tiny pieces without noticing the impact. I seriously considered getting the axe and removing the toe during one particularly bad bout.

There's a reason that doctors call it the male equivalent to child birth.

Incidentally, the second most painful affliction for males is kidney stones, which luckily for me, most gout sufferers end up with as well.

Thankfully I only get it every couple of years and if I pump down the anti-inflams immediately it's not too bad but if it comes on overnight and you don't get the medication in time, it's 2-3 days off work, then a week of limping. I don't necesarrily regulate my diet around it but make sure I don't eat a sh!tload of tomatos, shellfish or drink alot of red wine. I used to love a glass of port (ie full pot glass) to finish a big night, needless to say I don't do that any more. Bananas apparently absorb some of the uric acid so are good to eat while suffering, drinking alot of water will help too.

I did think it was pretty amusing that people were bagging out Kewell saying he's soft for not playing through it, I guarantee none of them have ever had gout.

HUH?

Gout is not an autoimmune disease. It is caused by a build up of uric acid (urate) in the bloodstream. With high concentrations of uric acid, crystals begin to precipitate and can caused extreme pain, particularly in the extremities.

You can reduce symptoms by altering diet. Avoiding alcohol is a very good start. Also avoiding foods with high fructose levels (including table sugar which is 50% glucose / 50% fructose) as urate is an end product of purine metabolism.

So, no alcohol and no sugary drinks might do a world of good. Keep in mind that there is also a hereditary factor involved.

Good luck with it.

Been through this. It can get unbearable sometimes.

I'm pretty lucky that I get it in my ankle on my left foot and big toe joint on my right. Hobble around like a crab for about a week afterwards.

I've had mild gout attacks for a few yearsnow, since I was about 35 (40 now). Maybe 3 a year.

That is I thought they were kinda bad at the time. But the one I had mid february was bad. Really eye poppingly bad. I tend to get it in my wrist, and my whole hand and lower arm swelled up.

I had a week off work and it took a month for it to settle right down. Had a couple of mild reoccurances that I was able to shake off OK with some colgout I had left over but the docs now put me on Zyloprim (allopurinol) once a day to get my uric acid levels down a bit

It does run in the family - my Dad and grandfather both got it too. I hope getting some weight off over the next few months might help but might be something I'm stuck with.

Bloody hell it hurt.
