Yes. If news reports prove to be correct, ignoring or covering up for child abuse by other Catholic (or is it Anglican?) preists isn't on for someone of his stature in community. Sure he has done some good things for the community, but that in itself doesn't mean he is to get away scot free.
Rubber stamping every bill that is passed through parliament? Tough gig that one.

Yes it was in the news today that he was accused of raping some girl himself when the girl was 16, who is now deceased. Remember the key word in my post is accused. Why i say this is that it seems a bit sus the timing. Even as a person who wants the GG to go, I wouldn't be surprised if this allegation was a smear campaign, just like with the 2 girls and Carey spa incident. Knowing the media and especially with the coverup allegations going on, his name will be dragged through the mud.
Yeah, I wasn't sure of what I had heard, just a bit of one of those news updates. If the alleged victim is deceased then where is the accusation coming from? It does sound a bit sus, but regardless he should still go.

A person of such a high post cannot be seen to be covering up child abuse. He was actually offended when it was suggested that he condoned child abuse. Actions speak louder than words. I'll be well p1ssed if he keeps his job.

Myee, no offence but I think before you go saying things about people and what you feel about the situation, at least get the religion right. He is Anglican.
I think he should stand down - discounting these allegations etc. Just because I think he is a weak G-G anyway. I didn't agree with his appointment in the first place.

The GGs a waste of public money, usually last post before retirement, basically they are all bottom feeders sucking the public purse, this w@nkers no exception, at least Bill Hayden held more respect, religion and politics should never mix.......... have a look at some of these islamic countries where they do and tell me if its a good idea.

He himself is not a child molester, the allegations are that he knew such things were going on but did nothing about it.
I genuinely believe he is against it, but I think was a bit slack or too affable to do anything about it.

Someone mentioned it in the news tonight, but I have doubts about that story. Seems to be rather too much like the George Pell allegation last year, which was quite clearly nothing more than a fairly blatant blackmail attempt.
As for whether he should go - his actions don't relate to his current job. If he was still Archbishop of Brisbane his position would be impossible, but he isn't.

The whole thing is just plain odd.
If she was r*ped by him, surely there would have been criminal charges laid at the the time or later.Not a civil lawsuit laid in march this year.
Also don't record show he was no where near where she alleged the rapes occured. Also what I thought was odd was that there was an approximate time frame of the 1 occurance.
I would assume if a person was r*ped, they would now the exact time and date it occured.
Somethings not right.

No he doesn't, Suzi. If anything it's the other way around. The GG is Australia's "figurehead" head of state. His job is simply to approve all Acts of Parliament that end up on his desk (that's Federal, not state) and attend this that and the other. Just to clear that up.
Now whether or not the GG should go or shouldn't go, there are MAJOR problems.
1. Only the Queen can actually sack him, either by her own decision or on a recommendation by the Prime Minister. Therefore, unless he decides to resign, he's there for the duration.
2. Any other action to get him out of office would be unconstitutional.
This whole thing is being dragged on because of the old "skeletons in the closet" thing - a common trap in public life. My take on it is that Peter Hollingworth is only guilty of one thing - ignorance and apathy. That, under law, is perfectly legal - as much as it's morally disgusting. Not taking into account this most recent rape allegation of course - I was talking about the child abuse. At the time it occured, the church was seen to be untouchable. Incapable of doing wrong. Of course we know now what a furphy that is - but what Hollingworth is doing is leaving the past in the past and moving forward. The trouble with that is that he isn't putting the past in the present perspective - and that's making him a lot of enemies in general society because it lacks accountability. Result, the respect he once had is shot to bits and that brings down the respect associated with the office of Governor General to boot. And that took a long time to recover from Kerr's Curr (thank you for that quote Gough Whitlam!!)
Anyway, I think this rape thing is a beat up. The woman who was r*ped is dead now, so why don't the family just leave it?? Oh no, they want to make a name for themselves - and that makes them just as morally corrupt as they are making the GG out to be. If I were Hollingworth, I'd skin them in court for libel - if he's teeling the truth himself of course.

Its going to be really interesting to see where this all goes now and particularly where public sentiment.
Until yesterday clearly public opinion suggested a resignation was in order.
With the rape allegations I wonder if public sentiment will shift. Ironically this could signal the beginning of public opinion moving back behind on the basis that the whole thing is starting to resemble a genuine witch hunt - not to prejudge the allegations in any way.
Certainly on talk back radio this morning I had the impression an increasing number of people believe the guy is not receiving a fair go.
Interstingly the many public figures who've joined the queue to call for his resignation (Tim Costello, Crean, Lindsay Tanner etc) have been strangely silent when it comes to suggesting Geoff Clark should set a similar example.
I 'spose we'll see how it plays out - personally I was opposed to his appointment in the first place, but am increasingly sickened at the enthusiasm so many have for his scalp.

Regardless if he does a good job governing the country..
as some idiot seems to suggest, he should be sacked.
He chose the wrong option, it has backfired on him and whatever reputation he had is now in tatters. He should have the guts to at least stand down and allow this whole episode to go to the wayside. His wife is suffering from cancer and he should be with her rather than in a position that is a huge waste of taxpayers money.
It seems to me his position is more important than the state of the church and his own wife. To me, he displays a very selfish attitude.
