The MCG returns to haunt the Dockers....once again. They seem to struggle at the MCG. Stats indicate this.

Overall - 42 attempts: 12 wins, 30 losses.

Past 5 seasons (2009-2013) - 12 attempts: 3 wins, 9 losses.
Past 5 games - 6 attempts: 3 wins, 3 losses.

Today in the Grand Final, they struggled with the occasion. It's all well and good to beat a tired Sydney Swans outfit (at Paterson's Stadium) who were injury ravaged towards the end of the season and had only won 2 games out of their last 7 games. But it's a different kettle of fish playing a top quality victorian team at the MCG. In season 2013 the Dockers played three times at the MCG - round 17 against Richmond and lost by 27 points, round 21 against Melbourne and won by 95 points and the Grand Final and lost by 15 points against Hawthorn.

But Freo will be better for the experience having a Grand Final under their belt. They will be a better side next year too. Natural progression and an abundance of talent suggests Freo will be right up there again. Losing a Grand Final hurts big time but Freo will be better for the experience and will learn from today's loss.

Well done Freo, you have given your supporters one hell of a ride during the last 3-4 weeks and also during the Home and Away season. Well done to the Freo supporters for sticking by their team when things were really really bad in those early 2000s. The purple haze (I think) is here to stay.

I think the future for the Fremantle Football Club will only get better.

Cheers.

Reckon we're a chance not to be sent to Antarctica next year, surely the GF reply will be at the G, as we are likely to get the hawks twice next year

Gotta say straight up my love for Essendon probably blinds my hatred for Hawthorn but felt you blokes were the better team on the day. Costly kicking in front of goal cost you your chance but its easy to say in hindsight.

The big moments of the game I that went against you:
-Fyfes 2 shots on goal in the 1st (he's my fave player in the league, bar none, but the moment got the better of him in those).
-Pav's shot on goal in the 2nd
-The Dawson/Roughead in the back. Please. That wouldn't be paid in 100 grand finals.
-The Fyfe holding the ball straight after Rougheads goal in the square.
-Ballantyne in general.

For those negatives for you blokes, Mundy & Pav were huge in the 3rd and if it wasn't for some wayward efforts should have went on with it.

Anyway I'm pissed, I feel as though Hawks got away with one, but that won't help what you're going through now.

Great season guys, no doubt you'll be right up there again in 365 days.

The Fremantle Football Club needs to take a stand and demand Umpire Nicholls never officiate one of our games again, I'm still reeling from the fact he was considered one of the best field umpires in the league.

I really tried to prepare myself for the reaming I knew we'd cop from him today but **** me he took it to a whole new level, was blatant cheating. I have never seen a worse 50 metre penalty in any game let alone a GF than Franklin's today, this guy is meant to be one of the best umpires going around yet doesn't know how to set a mark? Amateurish as ****.

Anyway, Hawthorn took their chances and we didn't, too gutted to go on atm.

On the umpiring, when Johnson was paid that 50m, how far did it actually go? I swear he should have been 10-15m closer to goal, but would have to see a replay.

Hawthorn had a clear instruction to tackle and push and grab after a mark was taken. It should have been punished with numerous 50m penalties. Pathetic umpiring of that tactic.

I just watched Ross' post match presser. He alluded to a Freo player in the forward line that basically ignored team instructions in the last quarter allowing Bryan lake to drop in on marking contests. Was was pretty pissed but refused to name names. Any idea who he was referring to?

I hope it stays behind closed doors as Freo need to regroup, stay as one and march into 2014 on the solid foundations laid down in 2013

It sucks to make it into the grand finals and lose. It really does. :(
As usual, the umps made questionable decisions which really hurt us. But to be honest, we missed too many of our chances and slipped at crucial contests too many times. If we have took our chances, we would have pinched it. Hawthorne went in today as the favorites and come out as the better team, so they deserved the victory.
Still, I'm proud of how the boys played. Fought all the way to the end. Could have done better of course, but still a good effort. Not going to pound on any of the guys (except maybe the umps :S) as they have played their hearts out.

Still, I'll be going into my hole to sulk now...
Geez, Pav really deserved better :(

****, the last quarter killed me. We got so close, but we were just not good enough when it mattered.

Was so proud to see them run out on the MCG, and there was no question about the effort. Nerves obviously hit us hard though. Sydney kicked 14.7 last year, we kicked 8.14 this year.

Commiserations dockers. Great team effort and no doubt, as the hawks did this year, you will come back stronger..
On the topic of being reamed by umps, 15-14 hawks favour. Refer to your game vs swans a couple of weeks ago..25 frees to swans, 13 to you guys...now that's a reaming.

Good luck in '14

Seriously only the brain dead focus on the number of frees in a match. Self evidently if an umpire pays holding the ball for one team and not for the other there is a 1-0 in frees. But if they pay one and don't pay five for the other it is effectively six - 0 but is still only 1-0 in the stats.

Freo were hard done by in the umpiring. The key decisions all went against freo, as did the bounce of the ball which seemed to bounce high on a number of occasions when a free player was actually outside the hawk and the ball bounced over both into the arms of a third player - usually a hawthorn player.

You were unlucky on the day.

I hope you have a great big celebration today with your players who will be hurting but they need to know with your support they can get back there again

After a night's sleep, I think I am even more disappointed. Lots of people going on about how Hawthorn were better and deserved to win. True to an extent, but we created more than enough chances to beat them.

Then there was the umpiring. Felt like we were absolutely r*ped with some critical decisions inside the Hawthorn F50. I'd have to watch the game again to properly assess the umpiring, but don't know if I can make myself sit through that again.

Thanks for the overall sentiment of your post but what's being referred to here are the three goals you were handed by the umps within the 15 free kicks. By handed I mean from the goal square/ 25 metres. Pav got a chopping the arms one early in the third from 40 plus, but other than that zilch for us. Even the Lake incident was ignored and Walters had to go back from 45 to kick his goal.

But we're generally acknowledging you deserved to win given our poor kicking for goal. 17 marks inside 50 vs 11 but still lose - not good enough.

They really need to address the play on rule for buddy. A guy should not be able to run around on the mark like he does with out the oposition player being able to do something about it. That 50 and gimme was embarassing. If you do what he does in open play, it is play on.

It is a really disappointing loss and you could feel it in the crowds reaction that we gave the game to them through poor kicking. With every miss kick and missed goal the moans of frustration were getting louder.

Anyway, always next year.

Hey Freo fans, commiserastions for the loss and congratulations for an effort worthy of a grand finalist. We proved to be the best side for the year but you guys were so close behind us I can only think that the future is very bright for your club. We both disposed of Cats and Swans in the finals so don't let any other fans get you down. Chin up and you will see the results over the next few years is all goes well with injuries, etc.

Just a side note, although we have been copping flak from Freo fans on the boards (especially Bay 13), I must say that I had an opportunity to meet some Freo fans with their families on Friday and I must say that they were some of the best I have met in general. They talked to me about coming to Melbourne for the first time with their families, going to Footy Show on Thursday, GF parade and the GF the next day. They loved the carnival atmoshpere in Melbourne for our game. They never see this side of the finals and are looking forward to the unique experience again win or lose. Although they would now be disapointed, fans like that are more than welcome in our great city. So again, congratulations to the purple haze that engulfed Melbourne this week and hope they are back soon for the re-match in next year's GF. :)

Urgh the pain of the loss is worse than the hangover.

I have no doubt that we were the better team in terms of ball movement and structure. Our back six were awesome. MJ was an absolute beast all day. Gu was an animal. Our movement out of their half was as slick and poised as it has been all season. Sandi's influence was almost non existent and left our mids often looking to run onto a clearance rather than do the hard in and under. IMO this wasn't adapted to early enough.
Barra was fantastic and made the rest of the mids look like weekend hacks. Fyfe's overhead ability was clear for everyone to see as was his kicking issues. The best thing for him as a player probably happened yesterday. He will focus on his kicking massively over the off season and come back a better player for it.

Crowls was Crowls. Did his role and then some.

The refs calls were bad but in terms of balance it was hardly game breaking. They are just inconsistent and you have to work and adjust to what you have infront of you.

The forward line just failed. Mayne was solid without being damaging with his pressure game. Walters was his usual dangerous self but needed to be at the feet of packs rather than in them. Ballaz was a non threat. Pav lacked his strong leads but that could be due to our mids not getting the run out of stoppages.

At the end of the day it came down to missed shots. Despite the adversity we created opportunities and yet didn't take them. We lost it. That's a hard pill to swallow.

The fans and supporters walking out of the ground, many looking at a long and expensive trip back, were admirable. There were hawks fans taunting us with Purple Faze and rubbing the defeat in our face but we held our heads high and didn't retaliate.
It was typical of the Freo faithful. Strong and unified.

Moving forward there are some challenges for 2014. No doubt we have a strong opportunity to go to a another GF but our aging champs are a week to week proposition.

While our mids have depth we need to have a better in and under game and not over rely on our height. Rotating Neale and Walters through there should be looked at. We need Fyfe to move forward. He is just too much of a weapon to not have him down there. With Morra coming back he can slot into Fyfe's role.

While I get how important De Boer's role is I struggle to believe it also should be disregarded as an attacking presence.

Pav will be in and out of the team and needs some support. If we can't pick up an established FPF than Hannath can look forward to a huge preseason.

All up it was a great season. Geelong in Geelong was a win that will never be forgotten. Our refusal to buckle under a weight of injuries showed the strength of the belief around the club. We found a bucketload of new talent that will hold us in good stead for years to come. The club was given numerous challenges from the AFL (like sending us down to Geelong) and the Steve's handled them mostly well.

Hard to fault Ross. He will not lose the focus of the group. If anything they will be even more unified now that they all share the pain of loss. Ross does seem a little stand offish from FFC which I hope he changes. The club will need to hear the right things to be delivered with conviction to help us move forward confidently.

All up it's been a wild ride and we get to do it all again next year. I can't wait!
