It seems that like my club we have the same problem when it comes to big games, either injuries or bad luck seem to play there part but still after seeing adelaide just win neither is a good enough excuse.

Mr grant Thomas has had his turn, enough is enough, the door is nearly shut but no quite for u guys but when u compare with say hoe Neil Craig gets resaults with avg players its just not good enough to suggest that tactics go out the window in finals which is what Thomas said last nite.

This man is a joke of a coach, yes hes a good manager of players but that doesnt win ya flags, time to make some hard decsions i mean its like Dany Frawewrly for mine in regards to how this bloke ever got a gig, thats right he shafted 5 time grand finalist and 2 time time premier coach Blighty, worst decion in the history of the saints and one that u guys will regret for sometime i believe

and finally what the hell was he think at selection, too many old farts and not enough run in a side desperate for it, another comedy effort by Thomas.

Bulls***.

The Saints have played in the last three finals series, and with such a young side doing it for them, I see them playing in the next three as well.

Carlton are crap look at your win-loss ratio since the start of the 2002 season. You are the easy beats and sides who began developing after you are now easily in front of you. Shut up!

Anyone who thinks the Saints arent a massive threat next year needs to check their head. Destroyed by injurys this year. Full credit to the Demons but look out 2007. Could easily be the Saints year.

Re: Losing culture - grant thomas

No matter what anyone says, three consecutive finals series and two consecutive preliminary finals is a good effort no matter how good the list is.

With the Saints list, I would have thought not winning a flag in the past two years would be underachieving.

Coach definately needs to be looked at, but I agree with Kurtis G that next season with a good run from injuries should be the saints year.

Kutris G when are people going to start to realise that the Saints are overated,6 finals in the past three years for two wins, hardly the record of a side with the so called best list,no ruckmen average backline the St.Kilda list has heaps of holes in it,just realise now you aint as good as you all think you are!

Re: Losing culture - grant thomas

I think that GT needs to changes his ideas of what is required in an AFL side today.

His weaknesses are IMO

1 - His will not admit his mistake in regards to ruckmen. No matter how well they play, or how effective a game will be with them, he will not concede on that point. We keep getting shown up, time and time again,

2 - Our lack of speed in the midfield is painful. Lenny Hayes is our biggest assets in the midfield. Dal and Ball cant run away from defenders like Lenny can.

3 - Which leads to point 3.. His reliance on his older players. (Robert Harvey excluded because he could still walk into any AFL clubs top 18). Powell, Peckitt and Thommo. I love Thommo as much as the next bloke, but the writing is on the wall for all 3 of them. They are slow, can’t get to a contest and look out of their depth now.

4 - Which leads into point 4. His idea about what it takes to make the finals and what is required. No nonsense, accountability, one on one football. We have to have a fit team to do that. We need players who can compete for a full game. Not half injured players who are going to struggle through the year, and then basically become a burden come the finals (Hamill and the 2 Clarke’s for example)

5 - Last and not least, and I have said this in countless threads on the man, his inability to change his mind (pigheadedness maybe?!?) and change his though process and strategic thinking when it needs it. Too many times GT has gone with the same game plan into games, for it to not work and to have us sink with as little as a whimper.

He needs to have a plan A, B, C and D. Not plan A, kick it long to Fraser and Nick and hope they can defeat several players at once.

He is a coach who is firm in getting a players head right, positive re-enforcement, and positive thinking etc. It has worked extremely well with Brendan Goddard, Jason Gram, and the Fishers etc. BUT, what we need now is a coach who will deliver us a premiership. Someone who will mould this team into an effective unit.

Not someone who wants us to win, and believes we can, without knowing how to achieve it.

I think trade week this year will be big for us. We have 4 ruckman and he doesn’t seem happy with any of them. We need some genuine pace in the middle. We probably need another tall defender to help Maxie out as well. Sam Fisher is another Jason Gram, but in a tall's body.

It’s all up to GT. Will he see the error of his ways and address the issues we have, or will he keep backing his own judgement and condemn us to another year of under achieving?

Re: Losing culture - grant thomas

you appear to be a charming lad spanner with a wonderful grip of the english language

ok spanner where has Grant let our ( i am assuming you are a financial member) club down?

Re: Losing culture - grant thomas

There's absolutely no point asking Spanner to articulate his arguments, panthers. He doesn't have any, just vitriol.

Spanner, turning on your own solves nothing. Did your Mother not teach you any manners? I don't share your opinions, but you've as much right as anyone else here to express them. But just bagging your own is extremely poor form, and you do it on just about every thread you post on, so lift your game and learn to play with the grown-ups.

Re: Losing culture - grant thomas

To the usual suspects - stop the personal abuse or you'll be banned from this board. It's the same people again and again and we're getting sick of it.

This is the St Kilda board and we want it to be a place where all of our supporters can have their opinions. If we all agreed it would be a boring place.

If you're not a Saints supporter and you want to spend your time criticising our club and our supporters you are not welcome. You'll be banned from this board and possibly from this site if you don't heed the warnings you are given. Opposition trolling is not welcome. If you want to tell the world how bad our club is, go to the main board or Bay 13.

It's obviously a disappointing time for us but lets try and have some rational discussion about why we've gone backwards this season. We've got the trade period, the national draft and the pre-season draft to come so there's still a bit to talk about.
