Now that Butterss has gone is there a chance that GT can come back?

Not as senior coach obviously but something like High Performance Coach.

It'd b great too see GT back.

NeXus Helen - is that you ?

I doubt that this would be considered given some of the comments he made - Lyon would probably not accept this.

Thomas is gone.

Butterss is gone.

Let's concentrate on the future, not the past !

I hope not....we are moving forward NOT back.

Plus I'm confident Burke would not want him around the place, not sure about A.Thompson.

I think that would be destabalising for RL to have him hanging around, partying with the players.

I second that, is it you NH?!

The Saints Footy First group did actually state that there was no likelihood of Thomas returning.

I would hope that the emotion surrounding GT at the club has warmed enough to welcome him back with all the dignity that a past coach deserves. I do not necessarily mean invite him back in a professional capacity, but simply to make him feel welcome at the place he has strived for years to improve.

There is no need for ridicule or derision.
GT filled a vital and esteemed role at the club for a number of years.

When he was unceremoniously sacked at the end of last season he still had the class to depart in a manner that showed he was true to his word, a real class act.

Butterss was a deja vu - he too had the class to depart in a dignified manner that held the club above the individual.

I am impressed with both of them and wish to thank them for their parts in the contruction of a more vital and viable St Kilda football club.

Agreed. Thommo is a gun and his record stacks up pretty well against a lot of other coaches.

I am surprised his name didn't pop up elsewhere. He did a lot of good for our club.

Mate, he had a behind the scenes power struggle over a sponsor,s board, with the aid of Fow, to try and get a financial influence over the club.

That is not class. StKildonan, you have clearly not done your research on this one, which is unusual for you.

I did not mind him as a coach, but lets leave him behind. Fine, come back in the capacity of second longest serving coach, but that is it. An lets not pretend he left with class.

I hope that when the dust has settled in a few year, and they are not seen as a threat to the established board or coaching staff, Butterss and Thomas will receive some kind of public recognition for all the good they've contributed to the club - a certificate of thanks or something at a B&F night, for example. And around the same time they should be made to feel welcome around the club. Despite making the kind of mistakes that many people in their infinite wisdom assume they themselves would never have made, these two had a profoundly positive effect on the St Kilda Football Club.

At the end of 2008 when we are in the bottom 4 again, Lyon should be replaced by Grant Thomas. He was the best coach St.kilda has ever had.

Best coach weve ever had? How old are you? 12-14? Obviously not old enough to remember/or have learnt about Allan Jeans?

Grant Thomas did ok with the plethera of early draft picks St. Kilda were awarded from some very ordinary seasons in which Thomas played a part in (2002).

I'm all for people having the right to express their opinion on these boards but what annoys me about your posts Nexus is that when challenged your only argument is that you're only "telling it how it is".

All of our supporters are entitled to their opinion and if they happen to think that we will have a good season next year, that Ross Lyon is a good coach, Thomas should have been exited or that Rod Butterss did an excellent job they are well within their rights to say that.

In fact on that topic it's been great to have so much discussion about Footy First here by supporters from both camps. Even though many of us felt quite strongly one way or the other on the whole the debate was done in very good spirit. Good job all. :thumbsu:

Excerpts from The Age :

It is understood the Saints offered Thomas approximately $100,000 two weeks ago

The approach, which was rebuffed, is believed to have been made on the club's behalf.

Yesterday morning, a further attempt to settle the claim and finally turn the page on a controversial period in the club's history failed

The writ, which was served on the then St Kilda administration of Rod Butterss on September 5, includes a demand for $100,000 that Thomas claims was promised to him upon his sacking in 2006 on the condition that he did not criticise the club or anyone representing it.

A further $167,000 is being sought for what Thomas has claimed are annual leave and public holiday entitlements, although the former coach signed a statutory declaration while he was still at the club which stated he had taken all the annual leave he was owed. Thomas has since claimed that he was pressured to sign that declaration.

Thomas said at the time of his unexpected departure almost 15 months ago that he could never hurt St Kilda and vowed to maintain a dignified silence

***************

Does anyone believe that a man who is well known as stubborn, positioned himself perfectly for the coaching job, refused to allow a separate person to negotiate player contracts, and who wouldn't pay back a private loan after 6 years, could be pressured regarding leave entitlements? Don't think so.

Take the $100k and rack off - let the club move on please.

hmm when I read the article today ... first thought ... slow news day.
2nd thought ... can't imagine him being pressured to do anything.

I must say that that was my first thought having read the article.

Look I think Thommo did a great job for the club and it was disappointing to lose him in such acrimonous circumstances but it's just time to get all of this sorted out. His beef was with the previous administration and I would hope that the two parties can come to an agreement as soon as possible.

Like Squizzy said as a club we need to move on.

As the Alice Cooper song goes...''Your Poison...poison running through your veins''...rack off Grant, you had your time and weat have we to show for it?

I concur.. move overseas.. forget about the money.. only come back when you TRULY recognise St Kilda's best interests...
