Are you sure? http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=642

Prince originally wrote this for The Family, a band that was signed to his Paisley Park record label. The song was inspired by a member who had just broken up with his girlfriend. The Family was made up of former members of The Time, and they released only one album.

Hmm, I concede.

Did 'The Family' actually record and release it though?

Either way, its a tragically beautiful song, and IIRC the filmclip was recorded the day after Sinead broke up with her boyfriend of the time so the tears were very real.

Cruel to be Kind - Letters to Cleo (Nick Lowe)
I want you to want me - Letters to Cleo (Cheap Trick)
I am a rock - The Church (Simon & Garfunkel)
Don't Change - Grinspoon (INXS)

Action - Steve Stevens Atomic Playboys; also Def Leppard - (The Sweet)

Thought these two covers are both absolutely outstinding. Grinspoon really did justice to the INXS anthem, and Warnes, what an incredible album that comes from, have owned it for years and still play it as often today as what I did back when I first bought it.

Next post - Man Who Sold The World, great song, great cover, just as was the cover by Jordis Unga from the original Rockstar series.

The Japan cover was unique to say the least.

Always Something There To Remind Me-Naked Eyes
It's My Party-Dave Stewart
Jealous Guy-Roxy Music

2 covers of exactly the same song:

Drugs Don't Work covered by Ben Harper and by Grinspoon

An example of where the song does the work for you. Brilliant original and brilliant covers. Hard to go wrong with the lyrics and melody.

Thats the first song that popped straight into my head when I saw the thread. The version from Live on Mars is goosebump stuff.

Also...

The Tea Party - Paint it Black (Rolling Stones)

Placebo - Running up that Hill (Kate Bush)

Placebo - Where is my Mind (The Pixies)

Placebo - I Feel You (Depeche Mode)

Placebo - Bigmouth Strikes Again (The Smiths)

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)

Placebo do some of the greatest covers around, they released a whole covers album a few years ago and its brilliant stuff.

They did an ok cover of 21st century boy from memory.

Some group did a fair version of Hounds of Love recently but it's hard to do it better then kate.

I love Ugly Kid Joes version of Cats in the Cradle

More faves of mine
Psudo Eco - Funky Town
Dixi Chicks - Landslide
Spiderbait - Black Betty
Smashmouth - Im a believer

Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah is THE BEST verson
