right off the bat I will just say I HATE COVERS - especially when it ocmes to people covering classics, even if they are putting their own spin on it and some say it is a tribute to the artists or the song. BS. I hate 'em with a passion.

What makes it even worse is when a classic song is covered and it becomes a hit and those that like it do not have a clue about the original version or the original artists and credit the band that covered it with being pure genius.

One example - Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack - awesome song, awesome songstress, writen all about Don McLean.

The Fugees - pfffwt!!!

Each to their own LL but I think your post is a genaralisation to say the least. I have had some of my fav's over the years covered by other people and have never been offended by them even if I thought they covered the song poorly. As to differant generations hearing old songs by new artists I also have no problems with that. If a younger/another generation gets exposed to older/other music I actually think that is fantastic. If you had looked at the list that POBT posted from Rolling Stone there was an old blues artist called Robert Johnson. His influence to British blues explosion of the 60's when everyone from the Stones to Clapton was covering his songs just can not be ignored. If a generation had had your attitude then we would not have the Stones or the Beatles for that matter. Go look at the covers on early Beatles records. I bet you have a boogie at every party you attend:) .

As to classic's being covered I still have no issue. The word classic to me is a very overused word anyway. No offense to Phil Collins lovers but he has had songs of his described as classic and to be honest that leaves me cold.

The covering of music to me is an integral part of my musical evolution over my 47 years. As a young bloke I was introduced to Emerson Lake and Palmer a rather sad prog rock band who I like. They covered Classical music for exmple. Think of Fanfare For The Common Man by Copeland for example. A cover that has become more recognised by them than by the original composer.

As I say each to their own and I am not trying to convert you to my likes and dislikes.
