Richmond had picks 1 and 4, Hawthorn 2 and 5 (melb had 3?) in that years Draft, so why are Richmond 2 years behind?
You're under the assumption that Hawthorn and Richmond were a mirror image of each other at the end of 2004. Long way from the truth, though. At that time Richmond had an almost complete lack of quality 20-25 year olds compared to Hawthorn.
You cannot equate the Hawthorn midfield, for example, inherited by Clarkson to that inherited by Wallace at Richmond. The collection of Crawford, Mitchell, Hodge, Osborne, Clarke, Bateman etc were far superior to their equivalent at Richmond of Nicholls, Fleming, Tivendale, Hyde, Krakuoer and Johnson?
Of course we also had Coughlan and Campbell in the midfield, but as we know since then Cogs has been available for little more than a handful of games, and Campbell was only there for a season before retirement. Browny occasionally went in there before his nasty break, but that was pretty it for Richmond circa 2004 as far as onballers went.
Richmond not only have been forced to rebuild a cluster of 18-22 year olds over the last four years, but have had to contend with terrible planning by the previous generation of coach/recruiters in leaving a legacy of substandard middle-age players.
