Two choices again i guess. Knightsy or Teddy Mew.

Again im going with the 'new boy' (Knightsy being the original "BOY") in Chris Mew.

Why, well i guess its for the fact that, who ever beat Chris on a consistent basis?

Yet the reason im going with Chris is straight forward enough i guess. For 95% of his career Chris was our CHB. Knights was moved around much more that Chris ever was and probably (though he did make his name at CHB) played only 70-75% of his games at CHB. The rest were either at CHF or FF.

I cant think of one bloke that year in, year out would best Chris Mew. Still i guess that sort of holds true with Knights as well (from memory though, i think that Quinlan gave him some trouble and maybe Walls did too). Templeton and VanderHaar vs Knights used to be great contests for the highfliers, and he was no doubt more athletic that Chris was. For that fact that Knights could more easily shift across to a flank im putting the first vote in for Mew.

Thoughts?

At the risk of being picky you went for Mewy & one of the reasons was because Knights'y could more easily slip over to the flank - sorry you aren't picking the team now you are picking the best CHB.
I have to go for Knights - he was the most exciting player I have ever seen.
The marking & dash of Knightsy at his best were something to see.
Remember his last couple of years as a forward? Injury riddles but he still regularly displayed the magic. I will never forgive Jeansy for leaving him out in the 85 GF. No man as great as Knightsy should finish in the magoos.
Mew- the rock of the great 80's side. When he went into retirment in 1990 suddenly the back line wasn't as steady & looked very vulnerable. I also remember the plan of Joyce in 91 to have the ruckman virtually play CHB & have Mewy as a kick behind the play ruckman.

Grendel its gotta be Knightsy for me, ill never forget as a kid when he broke his collarbone, missed seven odd weeks of footy and got beaten by Graham Moss for the Brownlow by 3 votes. Knights was sensational, his versatility shouldnt be seen as a negative. So for what its worth put me down for Knights

Bubba, GM dont get me wrong re the versatility bit. Side by side im voting Mew as i think he was a better pure CHB than Knightsy was. Nobody ever beat Teddy for nearly ten years. He will do me for CHB, but i appreciate the comments.

Cheers.

I tend to agree, Grendel. I can never remember Chris Mew being shown up on a footy field. "BP" the original quiet achiever.

Is there any reason we can't put Knights on a flank? Football is versatility and that guy would have starred in any position.

Just for his dash out of CHB I would have to go with Knights. He was a hero of mine growing up and the way he could mark a ball always amazed me. Agree totally on the Brownlow thing Bubba.

Mew was certainly a great player but I didn't feel the same magic watching him as I did with Knights.

Grendel and I have had this discussion before, and I'm sticking with the Boy. He was simply a sublime footballer, and if you had to name one position for him, it's CHB, so he goes in.

Teddy was magnificent - look at his performance in the 1991 Grand Final, he just controlled the whole half of the ground he was in - but he just gets edged because Peter Knights was a superstar.

Teddy is a certain starter for the bench, because he can play full back too.

------------------
He's blonde, he's quick
He's got a massive ... err ... kick
Danny Chook! Danny Chook!

It's an interesting question - are we constructing a side or simply nominating the best for each position? The arguments put forward tend to make assumptions one way or the other. For mine, if we are simply comparing one to the other, I'd go with Knights ahead of Mew. BUT, if this is a team we're talking about, it's Mew at CHB with Knights on the flank beside him.

Danny Chook put it best - Knights was a superstar. Simple as that. He has to be in the best team. He's my choice. At the risk of repeating myself, that's on the proviso that we are simply nominating the best.

Teddy for mine regardless of the criteria.
Knightsy was a fantastic footballer...Teddy was simply the best CHB we ever had....although I'd love to see Twiggy eclipse him one day !!!!!

in a tough points decision i would have to go for mew just.... i would have to say that he played the position for a longer period of time and controlled it right thru the hawks most successful period... he did all this with little fuss and fanfare and lets face it was rarely beaten....
knights was a personal fav of mine....my first number on my jumper was the no.24... he was such a great player to watch... he was one of the most versatile players we had and would have starred in most positions...thus he played forward quite a bit too..... thus mew was more settled in his position there....
so it would have to be mew.

I'd have to say Teddy Mew, he was just so solid, great hands, long and accurate kick, he was just so reliable. Knightsy was also fantastic and probably had more 'talent' but wasn't as consistent as Mew. I'm sure there is still room for Knights in the team somewhere.
