Similar scenario occurred with Gibbs & Murphy. A handball from Gibbs to Murphy would have resulted in a goal, instead Gibbs had to hurry his kick & kick slightly around the corner due to an opponent running towards him, resulting in a minor score only.

It is not lack of football brain, it is lack of experience. The sort of experience that can only be gained over a long period of time.

But of course we can excuse the same kind of choice error in others. There are some marked for critical analysis no matter what and others not. The news is the same only the names change. Yawn.

The difference was Gibbs was under pressure and didn't have time to look around. Bentley had all the time in the world to get that goal. He even knew that Grigg was beside him.

Both were equally poor. Gibbs was flat footed while Murphy was running past a metre away. Took the selfish option instead of playing the percentages.

The difference is that you'll very rarely see Gibbs stuff it up like that, whereas Bentley's disposal and particularly decision making are the areas of his game that will likely cost him an AFL career.

That said, he was decent enough on the weekend and wasn't our worst. Wouldn't be disappointed to see him get a game against the Swans. Will not be a long term part of our 22, miraculously rapid improvements in disposal and composure aside, but he does work hard and give it his all.

Wrong. Gibbs knew the moment he missed that he had made the wrong choice and had put himself under pressure with his choice. He knew it and acknowledged it to Murph. He knew Murph was there just as Bents knew Grigg was there. Exactly the same. And Gibbs has played 50 plus games (in a row which also aids understanding among team mates), Bents less than half that and is in his second game in a row with this group.

All players make similar mistakes every game, but you have made your bias choices both pro one player and anti another and will see the logic you want to see to justify your stance.

Dont feel bad about it, it is me that is in the minority here not you. Like I said same news different names.

I have no doubt that he will play Sydney. But I do doubt he will be in our 22 in the next couple of weeks. With Walker, Wiggins, Bower and Warnock coming into the side. There will be no room at all. It is also the same for players like Stevens or Scotland.

Your defence of players is admirable 30YB, but we do have scales of player qualities we are talking about here.

In most cases we see Gibbs with the ball we have a level of comfort with the belief he will do something constructive with it.
When this does not occur it is somewhat easier to put down as an anomaly

On the other hand we see Bentley (for the sake of this argument) and we hold our breath as to what the outcome will be.
When a positive outcome eventuates we wipe our brow, and when it goes the other way it the player becomes an object of derision.

This is not bias and something manufactured by a warped mind, but rather a view brought about by the player who has given us reason for them to be perceived in such a manner.

You know me by now, I hate one sided picking out of errors that others make every game because they all do it. Adrenaline and ego take over and players go for glory. Training in some cases is to homogenize outcomes. We call it playing percentages. I am just as frustrated by player mistakes but I dont hold my breath for any player because they all do it. I see them all, thats the difference between me and other posters here. Just see them all and I will have no issue.

And the other thing some posters here have is very short memories. The guy has played 3 games for us now and some 24 in his short career. Simpson barely touched the ball in his first 3 games for the club. Gibbs was labeled soft in his first few outings, I could go on, but there is no point.

Posters here see exactly what they want to see. No more, no less. Problem is most don't see the TRUTH.

Not quite sure having 11 touches is the definition of a good game for a mid-fielder, we have played two very ordinary teams the last two games and if we do not have better quality players than him we are kidding ourselves, l am sure if we had played decent opposition in the last two games this would not even be a discussion point, we have a number of far better players than him that have much more to offer.

And fair enough.

The only time I get particularly upset at any player is when they have either their own agenda to appease or they flatly don't give a F...

I saw Bentley running around like a dog chasing his tail trying to stop a chain of handballs circling him.
I had to laugh as I appreciated the effort yet found humour in his fruitless exploits.

Did anyone see the determination on Russell's face breaking lines, on the weekend
I love the guy but will still ask for him not to be in our team from time to time.
Nothing against Russell but my love is for the group called CFC.

Totally agree with harker... its quite sad to pay to watch a game and end up seeing player that don't chase or even put up a fight if the ball isn't handed to them on a platter. i have been listening/reading on this site for a while(end of last year) but actually joined yesterday since i have been getting into footy more of late, i must admit some of the comments made to players such as ackland, russel would have made me feel like shite if i was any of those players....


Then for example russel played a hell of a game in perth and the confidence seems to be growing which is great. Hopefully the ones i use to hear bagging the crap out of players such as russel at the footy are the ones the yell loudest when they do something good like tackle etc, its a 2 way street and think after 2 years of abuse maybe needs it and is earning it.

I saw a lot of Bentley playing for Sturt and Port Power in Adelaide. Was a cut above the others in the SANFL however never really cemented a spot in the Power line up - but he was not alone there, some interesting selections by Choco and the brains trust meant he never had more that 2-3 consecutive games before being sent back to Sturt for extended stints (he didnt have a gold pass like some others)
From what I have seen over the last 2 weeks he's not been a revelation but he hasn't been the worst player. Doesnt give up, goes hard, laid a few tackles and had a hand in a few goals yesterday. Suppose what I'm saying is he's worth perservering with a few more games to see what progess he makes. Look at the return on the investment with Setanta.

Fair point, but i think we can only afford to have a couple of these "probably not in our absolute best 22 but let's give him some games to see how well he develops" players out on the park every week.

I think he was ok on saturday, and the nice goal that he kicked (all his own work, as he intercepted a tiges kick-in) is not his first for the club.

Having said that, it's that time of season where we really ought (IMO) to be picking our very best 22 (ok with maybe 1 or 2 developing/long term-type players) and i dunno if big Greg's really got a place in it.

I have a feeling the woeful conditions on saturday allowed his usually poor kicking to go unnoticed (because everyone's kicks were shyte, except Fev who somehow magically turned dead-eye).

Not many of them are average rookies, they all tread different paths. Carrazzo is a good example for Bentley, was delisted by Geelong, had questionable disposal. Glad we stuck with him.
