Todays scorecard proves it, sending boys to do a mans job shows Wayne Phillips selection skills are as fumbly as his keeping was. Hell even Johnny davison(41 off 32 in a ODI canada v Scotland) would still be an asset. Clowns indeed!!!

Blewett may pay price for hitting out

Article from: The Advertiser

DISGRUNTLED former Test batsman Greg Blewett's relationship with the the South Australian Cricket Association appears irreparably fractured.
SACA last night cited Blewett, 35, for publicly ridiculing state selectors under Rule 9, Detrimental Public Comment, of the Code of Behaviour. Blewett had lambasted state selectors Paul Nobes, David Kelly and Rod Phillips as "volunteers" and "clowns" in various media forums since December.

SACA charged 117-game Pura Cup stalwart Blewett after the veteran again criticised selectors while speaking on Radio 5AA on Thursday night. Forthright Blewett was led into hot water under questioning from hosts Ken Cunningham and Graham Cornes.

The Advertiser revealed on December 14 that SACA would release Blewett from the final of a three-year deal next season while pursuing a youth selection policy.

"Blewey" was incensed by comments made by chairman of selectors Nobes saying it was "time to move on" for SA and that he must make "oodles" of runs to earn a recall. "It's incorrect, not right. For Nobes to say that my form is not warranting selection is absolute c...p," Blewett told The Advertiser.

"I've had a pretty good year for Kensington. It doesn't make sense what he is actually saying."

The 46-Test star could have jeopardised his $100,000, 2007-08 pay-out with his latest comments on radio in which he said Nobes' comments "were a slap in the face" and "made his blood boil". Injured SA captain Darren Lehmann last night made an impassioned plea for Blewett to finish his Redbacks career on a positive note.

"As a mate of Greg's I hope he doesn't fall out with the SACA over comments made over the past 24 hours," said Lehmann of Blewett, who struck 2552 Test runs at 34.02 from 1995-2000. "It would be a shame for one of greats not to leave the game in a fitting way.

"It's a sad day for me personally to think that I am not going to play cricket again with Greg Blewett.

"He has been a great player for many years. I wish him all the best with whatever he chooses to do over the next 12-24 months of his cricket."

The SACA denies Blewett's snub is connected with salary cap constraints. "There is no correlation between Greg's omission and our salary cap," SACA communications manager Jane Elliott said.

"We have had discussions with Greg about fulfilling his three-year contract with the SACA and his retainer like all other contracted players will come out of our salary distribution."

Blewett was overlooked for selection despite the axing of young gun Callum Ferguson and loss of Lehmann and No. 3 Cam Borgas to injuries for SA's game against WA this weekend. Bottom-placed SA folded for 114 against the Warriors yesterday in Perth.

Opener Jason Borgas (600 runs for Sturt), Tea Tree Gully No. 3 Ben Cameron (492) and Glenelg's Tom Plant (357) were plucked from grade ranks ahead of Blewett, who has made 380 runs for Kensington this season.

Blewett was dumped from the Pura Cup side in February 2005 having scored 9682 runs at 46.1. The athletic strokemaker compiled 618 runs at 32.5 in 2004-05 and 270 runs at 24.5 in 2005-06.

Blewett averaged 59 in 2004-05 and 35 last season before being dropped from the one-day side this campaign with 52 runs at 17.3.

Looks like his goose is cooked, can't beleive he got sucked in by Cornes and KG.

So ...... in essence the selectors have gone for much younger players, two of them have made a hell of a lot more runs, and one had made just as many? Sounds like a sound selection policy to me.

Where's the guarantee Blewett wouldn't be making ducks at state level? Redbacks selectors understand there's not a lot of "now" in the Redbacks team and are looking 2-3 years down the track, and that is precisely what they SHOULD be doing.

They've been looking 2 or 3 years down the track for the last 7 years. Time for the selectors/coaches to sit on the sidelines with Greg Blewett.

Spot on. They weren't talking 2-3 years down the track at the start of the season. The best line up we'd assembled in years, a blend of youth and experience and we were going to challenge for both 4-day and 1-day glory this season.

1. Elliott
2. Blewett
3. Cosgrove
4. Ferguson
5. Lehmann
6. Borgas

Only two remain of our 'dream' batting line up.

The real question is why did the SACA offer Blewett a 3-year deal on top dollar after the 04/05 season when, at 33 years of age, he'd averaged 32 with the bat and could no longer bowl much due to his back?

there were radio reports that Greg Blewett will looking to play first class cricket else where in Australia if he is sacked from South Australian squard. Will any state recurit him??? I just hope the mighty the vics dont :thumbsu:

Plus an 'all star' attack of Tait, Gillespie and Cullen

No one else is making runs. Bring him back and give him a last go. He deserves it after the service he has given SA cricket.

They did this a couple of years ago with Cameron, Plant, Ferguson Cosgrove.

we were told a couple of years ago we will need patience, how bloody patient do we have to be?
