And yet somehow we managed to win the hitouts 51-43. The fact is that they got their hands to the ball just fine. What they did with the ball is another matter, as is the inability of their teammates to win a contested ball to save their lives... But why ruin a good crucifiction with ;)a few facts.

It's a reasonable point but don't forget Tippett would have won a few of those up forward and the Hawks only had 1 real (and average) ruckman versus our 3 recognised guys. Differential should have been massive.

Also agree a good portion of blame for lack of effective hit-outs should go to the mids who were terrible at ground level as a group.

The main ruckmen were as follows:
Renouf - 23
Griffin - 19
Maric - 18
Skipper -11
Tippett - 10

All the rest were 3rd man up situations, with Lewis (4) being the only player with more than 1. The 3rd man up killed us in the 4th quarter, with a couple of massive 30m spikes which cleared the pack completely and found Hawthorn players in the open.

Like I said.. they got their hands on the ball. What the did with it (hitouts to advantage) is another matter. I'd also be heavily critical of the midfielders waiting at their feet - our mids were terrible today, getting butchered left right and centre, whether there was a ruckman involved in the contest or not.

Maric and Griffin were both absolutely pathetic, don't give me any stats to possibly suggest otherwise. I didn't even think they got hands to the ball in the ruck contests that often, but even when they did, they gave the Hawks midfielders a spectacular run due to their inept performances.

Oh to have a good ruckman.

AFL football is not won by ruckmen anymore. The game has changed that much that really how often do you see ruckmen play dominant games compared to five- ten years ago?

Griffin was the best ruckman today. He jumped well in the middle. Our mids are pathetic though. Soft and no awarenesss in congestion and traffic. Hodge, Mitchell, Rioli are class and have poise and can play to a losing or winning ruck. Griffin got a lot of Raps from both Rowe and Mcdermott on 5 AA today in first three quarters and then after our mids got killed in the last McDermott comes up with the stupid comment that our rucks were beaten. Totally wrong - our mids were killed.

Try winning a game without a good one, when we lost Ben Hudson it killed a lot of our contested ball in the centre.
Ruckman are essential, why did Collingwood chase Jolly and Sydney Mumford?

Hear Port coaching staff lament the state of their rucks all the time.

Sorry can't agree with you on this one Ruckmen are like diamonds however so are aggressive in and under midfielders know where we can get some?
