For the record here is where we all stood mid season on the big Griff.

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/ben-griffiths.1013334/

You'll note I was in the won't make it brigade and very happy to eat a shit sandwhich on this one.

I didn't say he'd make it, but said I'd like to wait and see if he made it (and not at another club)
If we had of offloaded him it would have been a monumental blunder.

It would be interesting to know how many offers we had for him in the trade period and whether we considered it.
Not that I would trade him, but his trade value would have tripled in 2014.

More proven
Shown more
Does not equal proven

It's not even debatable that Vickery is more proven than all our other KPFs outside of Jack, so just swallow that and move on. You don't just trade that away because of poor form and another bloke being a serviceable contributor for the first time in his career over a five game sample. laughable. Reactionary. Short sighted.

So many swinging from this guy's nuts at the moment, playing as what, a 2nd ruck slash 2nd or 3rd forward. Who outside of the Tigers even knows who this guy is? Has he kicked a bag? Beaten a decent ruckman? FFS, he's shown some promise and a willingness to shed the pea heart tag. Full stop. I'm a big fan but he has a long way to go.

And FWIW I dont think Griffiths has ever earned a game through his VFL form so the only double standards I'll worry about is blokes who can't kick and don't put their head over the ball getting games over those that do. Nice inside mail though lmao

Resume the tuggathon
When did Tyrone ever dominate the VFL to earn a game in the seniors? That's the double standard I'm talking about.
Instead of using eminence based comments, try using evidence based statements!

Ive been calling for Griffith to be given a shot at the Forward/Ruck spot for years.... doing a great job.
Which would have been pointless, because he wasn't ready physically or mentally before this year.

WTF does gifting games have to do with anything anyway? If Griff wasn't perpetually injured or sooking about playing in the backline he would have been gifted games as well as Tyrone. Not that it is relevant to my post or Griff/Vicks current form. Try using some comprehension skills instead of running with some cloudy bullshit about double standards brother.

Griff has kicked 4 goals for the season and is averaging less than 10 hitouts a game and he is suddenly Jarrad Roughhead. Trade Vickery, Griff has gone past him. That's the joke right? Jack gets injured and we have this machine and Todd Elton dominating. Moronic.

he was ready to play as a CHB in 2012.... and we've been carrying Vickery for 5 years.

I never said to trade Vickery. Griff is killing Tyrone on EFFORT. His chasing, tackling and kicking to position are much much better than Tyrone's.
If Tyrone can bring that to his game, every game, he should get back into the team. There is no reason why having both in the team cannot work.

Agree with all of that. It's so smokey in here.

Watch the replay that's now up and you'll see the stark contrast between Vick and Griff. He doesn't kick a bag but he backs up his efforts, sets up play, delivers accurately and tackles hard. He's relentless. He also has to be one of the strongest contested grabs I've seen this season, you almost bank every field 1 on 1 delivered to him. If he can start doing that in the forward line he'll make a name for himself.
It's hard not to look at Griffiths and say well why isn't Vickery doing that? We've been essentially a man down in our forward half all year once the ball hits the turf.

Ty came into a very poor side in 2009 when we were crying out for players. Its true that he was probably carried for the first season and a half as most young players in a crap team are. Then he had a standout season in 2011 as a forward/ruck kicking 30+ goals. Injured most of 2012. Was ok in 2013. Given where we were in 2009/2010 its perfectly understandable why he never had to dominate at VFL level. His first AFL game was practically on his 19th birthday. How many 19/20 year olds dominate at VFL level anyway?

In saying that, Griff is now ahead of Ty no question. They cannot play both IMO. The Griff we are now seeing is a totally different player from what we have seen in the past. Credit to him. I had big doubts on him and am being proven wrong. His delivery into the forward line is deadly. Loved that kick that was almost smothered on a wing and it sailed on and on and Jack marked it 5m from the goal line. Very very few players can do that.

noticed watching the replay hes better than ty at stopping his man from zoning off for the double team on jack. Whenever there was him and his man and jack an his man jack ended up in more of a one on one where in the past we've either seen ty go up and get in the way or let his man get involved in the contest to stop jack.

I agree. You would also see Ty and Jack fly together a fair bit. Don't notice it as much with Griff.

I think people are too quick to write off Ty. IMO it is Griff and Ty that should be seen as our long term Ruck/Forward talent and we need them both performing if we are going to be any good. We need to find a away to keep both these players in the side. Time will tell, but I think Maric is on the thinnest ice, as his age, injury and the modern game may find him wanting. Ty has kicked ~30 goals in two seasons as the backup ruck - Griff, Hampson, Maric are yet to put scoreboard runs on the board.

It's nice to know he can be thrown down back if required and appears relatively comfortable. The back line training could really be a big positive in the long term. As was seen in the Carlscum game, if the pressure is on and the opposition is pressing forward a strong grab and big kick to initiate a counter is an asset.

I'm on the record as being a Vickery fan but he is going to have to make a statement now in the VFL to earn a recall.

Have to disagree about Maric. I think his absence has only enhanced his worth to the team.

You may well be right re Maric. I think our poor performance this year says more about the game changing to a contested style which does not suit us at all. I could name names but I have already done that often enough. I think Maric was found badly wanting in the EF when we could not buy a clearance in the last quarter. As much as he might try I don't think he has the capability to impose himself on the game anymore...time will tell. Hampson I think has an ability to change a game through hit outs to advantage.

Vickery has already proven he can impact games, just needs to do it more consistently, which can be problematic on a wet day in a loosing side. I get the lack off defensive pressure, but other have a net loss which is greater IMO.
