I've have recently started growing some herbs at home.

Got many of the basics going so far.

Thyme, parsley, oregano, coriander, basil, rosemary.

There was some little black bugs eating my coriander but after spraying them off with a squirt bottle each day they seem to have given up.

Also got something called Anise Hyssop that has an aniseed flavour. Just started to get a few of the purple flowers growing but haven't eaten any yet.

The oregano seems to be the slowest. The parsley (flat leaf) is going nuts.

So far haven't managed to kill anything so I'm pleasantly surprised. :D
 
I have become a bit of a fan of using lavender in deserts, especially custard tarts. Anyway, yesterday I was looking for the cat, who often snags an extra feed from the post grad students in the front house.

Just over the fence were the most beautiful but odd looking herbs, or flowers that I have ever seen. They had a wonderful fruity aroma and the flowers looked almost like oversized lavender but definitely smelled different from a distance, does anyone know what they could be?

Where I live, because of the pollution, growing aint healthy.I envy you.

Did you know that organic farmers in America have found diversity the best way to combat issues from bugs and such where normal farmers use herbicides? its worth investigating. For every bug there's a plant that keeps them under control. It's a really good lesson in balance.

I have seen herbs that supposedly repel bugs. I don't think it's that big of a problem though. I think the ants ate them :p

I have been doing this a fair bit recently. I have thyme, oregano, basil, parsley, French tarragon, lemongrass, rosemary, chives and mint. Also have a few tomato plants, a chilli bush, a curry tree, a bay tree and a kaffir lime. Next will probably have a go at planting rhubarb. Will do garlic in the autumn.

Given up trying to grow coriander. Struggle to get it to grow a decent amount, and it goes to seed way too quickly. Don't know whether it's my area or if I'm doing something wrong.

Mine has bolted to seed. It's just what it does. I think I gave it too much sun.

I'm hoping to harvest the seed and start again. I'm not going to give up dammit :p
 
I have successfully managed to grow coriander and chives but nothing else seems to be growing. Not sure how I managed to stuff it up so much?
 
I have a planter on my deck. I've got cilantro, Italian parsley, citronella, thyme, sage, rosemary and chives. I also like to grow green peppers and tomatoes over summer. All of them have been pretty easy and I haven't done anything special to keep them going.

I just planted a 3 by 5 meter area in my garden; broccoli, cauliflower, boc choy, parsley and corriander. I'll do another massive area hopefully this weekend.

Firstly i prepped the soil by taking a sample to Vasilis in coburg then took their advice on compost and fertiliser. For those who live in melbourne, Dirty deeds is a good show to garden to on Sunday mornings (here are podcasts)

I've had a nightmare this summer with f**king rats. The vermin scum have reduced the yields on my tomatoes, capsicum and they ate my parsley. Have had to resort to poison, however with a newborn won't be able to next year.

Anyone have any advice? I heard peppermint and oregano repel them so thinkin' of companion planting

After a slow start by the Oregano it is now going crazy and I've had to chop it back.

The Rosemary has had some heavy pruning recently and I'm hoping to get it to bush out a bit.

I did have the basil in a separate pot but now it is in the main garden it seems to be flourishing.

The purple flowers on the Anise Hissop have been attracting blue striped bees. They seem to be very friendly and haven't stung me but I can't help but jump back when the buzz too close to my face.

Hoping to put up a new garden bed soon. Gotta put up a fence to keep the chicken out as she just loves scratching for worms.
 
Great work JB... I have another section of garden, 6 by 3 metres which i'll do over the next few weeks then will start on some raised garden beds (back garden is massive).
