The AFL want an alternate strip for away games - we say we won't change our guernsey.

The AFL is hoping fans will encourage the clubs to change their minds and for the sake of viewing and clashes in jumpers seek an alternate one.

Over my dead body is my opinion - but what do you think?

I still haven't figured out why in AFL you don't play each team twice in the H&A season.

if you did that then maybe you could justify 2 strips.

over my dead body if i have any say in it.
fact of the matter is that we have come up against the likes of essendon, carlton, stk for well over 80yrs and now all of a sudden its an issue.what bulls***t.
its all tv driven.
congrats to our club, collingwood and the bombers for not "selling" their soul.

cheers!

I have actually changed my position on this over the past few weeks and l dont know if it is because l'm sick of Fat Eddie getting his way all the time, or, l actually like the idea.

Two guernseys? I think it is time for clubs to tow the line on this one. I was watching Andrew Thompson on the weekend discuss what St. Kilda had been through over the past two years to avoid clashing with the Collingwood jumpers, and it seems that they (Saints) do all the compromising when dealing with the Pies.

The same can be said when Port play the pies. I'm really tired of Eddie and Co. thinking that everyone has to comply with them.

Even though l am a huge fan of tradition, because of the clashes, tradition has to take the back seat. Therefore, to remain consistent and fair, l think that all clubs should have alternate strips. Lets make this a tradition starting in 2005. If clubs want to continue to adjust their 'away' strip on an annual basis (ie. Saints, Freo, co.) then that's up to them.

I think all marketing departments need to get their @rse into gear and design an 'away' strip that begin a fantastic tradition, and hey... we might even earn a dollar or two in the mean time!

I don't mind the idea of an away strip, might generate a bit of marketing income (although I wouldn't buy one).

However, if clubs are going to give up away privilieges then they have to be given firm home rights. Eg. the right to play a home game at your home ground of choice for all home games.

Let's put things into perspective here.

We are talking about a jumper that we might use only twice a year. Hell, we might even make some money here.

Who-ever is saying we are selling our souls are being a little over-dramatic.

I like the idea of a second guernsey...As a kid growing up watching state of origin i was about 5 yo or something i always remember barracking for WA coz they looked like the tiges. So yes to an away strip as long as its yellow with a black sash, black shorts and hooped yellow and black socks! Otherwise no deal!

Black nicks for home games (or yellow nicks if we revert to the 70s look) and white nicks for away games. Problem solved.

I am a strong supporter of alternate guernseys.

I used to umpire football and it was a pet peeve of mine back then trying to distinguish between players wearing similar uniforms (Essendon (Hampton Park) / St Kilda (Devon Meadows)) were the worst, though Seaford (Richmond)/ Frankston YCW (All Black with yellow trim around arms and neck) were also shockers.

I thought it was quite a shrewd move of the AFL having the Heritage round last year. Against St Kilda, we broke with tradition by wearing an alternate jumper... that was traditional!!!

Somewhat ironically, we were all set to wear an 'Alternate' jumper against the Bulldogs in the Wizard Wok but were requested NOT to do so by the AFL because it would have clashed with the Bulldogs and their Origin Energy Sponsorship jumper which was orange-ish.

I personally don't care what the configuration of our uniform looks like - the only thing I would not want changed are the colours. So long as they are Yellow and Black, then that is OK with me.

A design that I've always been pushing is a variation of the 'Claw' design of a few years back but worn as all yellow with single black 'scratch' running from shoulder to hip (analgous with the sash), black shorts and black socks.

This jumper would only be worn when we were to clubs we clash with - Essendon, Carlton, West Coast, Adelaide.

Port Adelaide gave a good demonstration of why it should be an 'alternate' jumper rather than an 'away' one. From what I saw of the Kangaroos / Port match, both teams were wearing a light coloured uniform which made it hard to watch. Port should have worn their normal strip so as to avoid a clash.

That's the problem. All these alternate strips are creating as many problems as they solve. I think the jumper St kilda was playing in on the weekend also clashed more with Collingwood than their traditional jumper. (luckily one team had white nicks :) ). Once clubs start looking at alternate jumpers, marketing considerations overtake any consideration of clashes.
