- Gus is the first guy called up if there is an injury.
- he has done a pretty long apprenticeship
- if Gibson or Burgoyne retire he is best 22 IMO
- he does have currency but is more valuable to Hawthorn as he steps straight into the lineup without transitional issues of a recruit

Off the back of a lot of Gus should be traded, Gus isn't composed, Gus bombs long ect. I thought I would open my account with this.

I am a fan.
His breakout 2014 proved to me that he can play footy at the highest level.

I do think that from that season he had things to work on but it was more the game plan & structures that were to be his critical learning curve.
Recently his position at BH has been at CHB where I think he is developing his "tall" defensive side, I see this as his only true deficiency but it is also not his primary role to play on 193-95cm guys. He does needs to be able to do this.
I have recognised enough of his talents, as have others, to wonder why & when is this guy going to get a more consistent run at senior level again.
I am a believer...
I want more games into him for the rest of the season or I believe Gus will want to walk & the time & effort the Hawthorn Football Club have put into him will have been waisted.
Gus isn't a hard luck story.
He has worked hard to be a Hawk.
He is the age we want going forward.
He is fast & a good kick.
He needs more games now!

Still suffers from "horses for courses" for now: against a team with two dominant small forwards (eg Wingard and Grey for Port Adelaide) he should line up along with Stratts. Against a team with multiple tall forwards it's hard to find him a position if Brand is also to come in as presumably Gus plays instead of Taylor which reduces our pure back outlet kicks to one (Birch). A full back line of Stratts, Chip and Gus is super quick though and I'd like to see more of it!

Nope don't see it.

Yep he can run and his height means that he whilst he is not elite one or one he can play well on small to medium forwards with his speed and reaach. He also has a long kick but as we all know, lacks touch and the ability to hit moving targets.

He could certainly play AFL level as Cheney has shown, but with Birchall and Stratts in the team and us rotating Burgers and Hodge through there, am not sure where he plays.

Would rather give Howe game time down there than Gus.

Doesnt handle the ball well enough still. I love his pace and ability to sweep back which is where his value lies. Decision making needs to improve too. 50 senior games would prob sort out both issues.

Next year if one of Gibbo or Burgoyne retire he would be in my 22

I recon Gus' best is yet to come. Probably not best 22 right now (although at his best he'd challenge Doc) and would probably get a game at a lot of other clubs. But I recon we need to keep him if we're going to lose Burger or Hodge or Gibbo in the next year or two.

Is obviously part of Clarko's master plan. If he wasn't then Brand, Willsmore or Heatherley would've been the in for Duryea on Friday.

He is still very raw in terms of AFL experience so there's plenty of room for him to improve on his composure. Similar to Langford. I just hope it doesn't cost us.

I'm not sure he will ever cement his spot but you can see something there. Harry O'Brien was a pretty handy footballer for a couple of years and it doesn't take a great leap of imagination to see the same attributes, and lack-of, in Gus.

Thought Gus, was pretty good on the weekend, but he'll make way for Duryea this weekend.

The problem with Gus is, we have to many similar types, for his sake I hope he gets traded at the end of the year as Howe has already gone past him.

Like him. Thought his game against the Dogs was excellent. Based on that i like him in the side. Just needs to work on disposal. We base our game on players having above average kicking skills, and his aren't consistently there yet.

Has been in the system for six years, when does that arrive?

Am confident about him, just needs some continuity. I think that's a factor that can't be underestimated.

Agree entirely and Savage is proving to be exhibit A. The problem is Gus has missed the bus. Doc is the preferred 6th defender which leaves Gus no opening. Plus Gus does not offer enough offence. Doc adds little as well but his disposal is a bit surer.

A good game against the Swans & he may yet show his value for the finals.
Ist pretty ominous that without any game time for the rest of the year that he will ask or be traded.
He is still getting schooling at Box Hill at playing on bigger defenders and therefore improving his overhead capabilities.
Given the names behind the ball for this week on the team sheet & the form that prettymuch all have found, I think that tonight will be the make or break of Gus at the Hawks.
I would love to see a 20+ possession game with big meters gained & high efficiency.
If this works for him I think Clarko would have created yet another card up his sleeve before the finals.
There is a plan!.... I just can't pinpoint who his opponents will be when/if we play the Swans, Cats, GWS or the Crows in a Final

As a Box Hill regular, I think he has to be removed from the list along with Zac Webster. They are both the exact same type of player, both have shocking discipline and shocking decision making and just generally stupid players. From the outside it seems like he should be playing AFL and has done his years in the reserves, but in reality I think he will always be a depth player for a decent team. IMO, trade bait.

I think he is very Langford like under pressure, for me that doesn't work out of defence. He has good pace, seems ok defensively and has some really sound versatility which makes him a good depth player. I'd like to trade him and/or keep him as a 26-27th player for situations that arise.

I just feel that he will always be 'depth' at Hawthorn. As much as i love the way he approaches the contest, i think that he would be better served moving somewhere that he would get a solid 15-20 games per season.

I reckon he's the perfect match up for Rohan who along with Buddy destroyed us last time.

If he can completely shut him down and hurt them going the other then it would be hard to say he doesn't have a spot come finals. Particularly as there's a reasonably good chance we'd play the Swans at some point.

could he be used in a tagging role - he is quick & pretty solid upper body

You need smarts to be a tagger, you need to have acute awareness of your opponent and the opposition and have a feel about when to take off and get the footy. Gus doesn't show those traits, for me he is a lock down defender who does a good job defensively but should be giving the footy by hand for the most part.
