He took the game on with his pace where approprate, was sharp with his hands on a number of occasions and dished off a few goals he could have kicked himself..Not sure what game u were watching

I was watching the game today, pretty sure I was. I have seen him live twice now and I think he can do better with a bit of left and right rotation of his head at times…..he burns a number of teammates at times which I would think he needs to fix to take the next step. When he does, watch out. Fortunately people see things differently, would be pretty boring if everyone agreed all the time.

After the game, I was told Montgomery hasn’t done an ACL which is good. HE did manage a fantastic falcon in the same play.

Callan Ward showed no signs of rust in a dominant return to footy as the evergreen veteran helped the Orange Tsunami surge past Sandringham by 46 points in an exciting VFL hit-out at Manuka Oval on Saturday morning.

A curtain-raiser to the GIANTS’ AFL clash with the Saints, the VFL side set the tone for the club early in the day after shaking off a plucky Zebras outfit to run away with a comfortable 19.11 (125) to 12.7 (79) win in perfect conditions in the nation’s capital. Holding a slim one-point lead at the first break following an exciting opening term, the GIANTS left the visitors in their wake with a blistering seven goal to two second term helping set up the big win.

With Ward and Harry Rowston dominating in the middle, Josh Fahey running rampant across half back, and emerging forward Max Gruzewski bagging four first-half majors, the GIANTS held a commanding 29-point half-time lead following the second-term barrage and were never troubled from there to register their first win of the season.

Playing in his first match in 35 days after recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in the GIANTS’ Opening Round win over Collingwood, Ward took no time in getting back into the thick of things at a crisp Manuka Oval with a superb return to footy from the get-go. Setting the tone early with the first two centre clearances of the game, the former captain of the club’s AFL side and 2012 club champion finished the first half with 14 touches and five clearances to lead the way for a GIANTS side consisting of 16 AFL-listed players.

The 34-year-old midfielder showed there’s still plenty of zip left in his legs in the Canberra clash, showcasing several trademarks sidesteps as he breezed past numerous Zebra opponents with ease in a standout return performance. The inspirational midfielder continued his dominance in the second half on his way to a match-high 33 disposals and 12 clearances to put himself firmly in contention for the club’s AFL clash with the Blues at Marvel Stadium next Saturday.

With Ward leading the way with strong support from Rowston (28 touches, five clearances) and Fahey (29 touches), the GIANTS were far too slick for the Zebras on Saturday, particularly after quarter time, with their smothering pressure catapulting countless attacking forays often finished off by GIANTS forwards. While unable to add to his first-half tally of four majors, Gruzewski was the standout forward on the ground as the 19-year-old continues to push his claims for a senior debut.

Darcy Jones (22 touches, two goals) and Conor Stone (17 touches, three goals) were both also electric as the zippy pair caused headaches for Zebra defenders all day to create countless scoring opportunities. First-round draftee Phoenix Gothard (11 touches, two goals) also had his moments in his first official game of the season after overcoming glandular fever, while Ryan Angwin (21 touches) was strong throughout the day, with his defensive running a highlight.

Ethan Williams (23 touches) was one of the strongest VFL-listed performers for the GIANTS.

The GIANTS will now look for back-to-back wins when they face Werribee at Avalon Airport next Saturday afternoon.

Cripps Gives His Take on Impressive VFL Win

Hear from GIANTS VFL coach Wayne Cripps following his side’s impressive win over Sandringham on Saturday.

GIANTS VFL coach Wayne Cripps says Saturday’s impressive win over Sandringham was built on the back of a four-quarter performance and that the GIANTS must repeat that if they’re to challenge ladder-leaders Werribee this coming weekend.

The GIANTS gave up the first two goals to the Zebras early on Saturday but kicked 15 of the next 21 goals in a commanding 75-minute stretch to run out 46-point winners at Manuka Oval. “The most pleasing thing was that we finally put together a four-quarter performance,” Cripps said. “It looked like a GIANTS game both offensively and defensively, and around the contest, and then the scoreboard took care of itself.”

The second-year VFL coach said his side’s ability to force the Zebras into turnovers and then convert them into scores was a key to Saturday’s win. “Our ability to minimise a lot of their attacks with our ability to pressure was at a high level. Then off the back of that we were able to maximise those turnovers created and use the ball well and be really efficient moving forward. “The challenge for us [moving forward] is that our side looks different each week so it’s about trying to make it look like a GIANTS game as often as we can for as long as we can.”

Former GIANTS AFL captain Callan Ward was pivotal to Saturday’s win, leading the way for the GIANTS in his first game back from a shoulder injury suffered five weeks ago in the club’s Opening Round win over Collingwood. Cripps said Ward’s experience was crucial to his side’s win. “It’s always nice to have players like that come through, especially for a guy like Harry Rowston. For him to have that experienced body next to him and to learn off him and get a lot more support is very beneficial. His attitude and leadership were what you’d expect of him as well. He had a massive game number-wise too, 33 touches and eight centre bounce clearances was huge.”

AFL-listed GIANTS:

2. Darcy Jones

22 disposals, two goals, four clearances

“Darcy is really building his game. He’s really understanding his role and really starting to play with speed on both sides of the ball. He’s looking really dangerous, one, when he steps in and pressures. And two, off turnover- his ability to explode forward and have a scoreboard impact has become very prevalent.”

9. Ryan Angwin

24 disposals, five marks

“I’m really happy for him. He’s been the carry over for the AFL side for the last couple of weeks, so it was great to get him back and play four quarters. The way we moved the ball meant he was able to get a lick of the ice cream and he found plenty of the ball. He’s hard and tough and he plays his role week in, week out. I'm really pleased he was able to play the way he did.”

11. Braydon Preuss

Eight disposals, 15 hit-outs, three marks, two clearances

‘Preussy’ is really building. He was able to blow the cobwebs out last week and then this week we saw some really strong contests in the air. The most pleasing thing was his follow up and his want to join in on defence and lay tackles and apply pressure. He’s really building and he’ll keep getting better.”

21. Leek Aleer

14 disposals, six marks

“Another solid game from Leek. He led the way down there. Some of his defensive decisions were a really good standard and he’s getting more and more confidence with wanting to join in on our offense every week.”

24. Harry Rowston

30 disposals, four clearances

“He was really tough once again. He’s hard and tough and he cracks in. He’s still learning exactly what his game is going to look like, both offensively and defensively, but he’s trained really hard and working really hard on those things and they’ll keep evolving for him.”
29. Phoenix Gothard

11 disposals, two goals, five tackles

“He really showed some good traits. He looked really lively. His ability to play his role and apply pressure and get looks at goals was at a high level. He had an equal-high tackle count for the game and for his first official VFL game it was a good hit-out.”

34. Josh Fahey

29 disposals, one goal, seven marks

“He was good. It was a good solid defensive performance. He probably didn’t use the ball as well as he would have liked but week in and week out he gives us great drive and offense. He played with a really good mindset on the weekend.”

35. Max Gruzewski

13 disposals, four goals, six marks

“Max is really building his game with his forward patterns ahead of the ball, and he doesn’t get beaten with his contest stuff. It’s good to see his reward for effort on the scoreboard with four goals. He’s another young kid working on his craft and he’s a very coachable kid who is getting better and better.”

Will be a good test against Werribee. Our run and quick ball movement will be an asset. Can’t make it to Avalon, after the 13 hour round trip to Canberra last week I am off overseas for a couple of weeks. Hope the boys continue to go well.

Yes. When the first grade team was named, I noted that they hadn't named a ruck emergency. Then, he's omitted from VFL.

Either he's got a niggle (which isn't on the official injury list), or they want to give others a full game in VFL. But it does seem odd.
All became clear - FB has his announcement of the birth of his son. 💕

AFL Veterans Bolster GIANTS’ VFL Side

Two experienced AFL campaigners headline a strong GIANTS’ VFL side as they head south to take on Werribee on Saturday.

Nick Haynes and Lachlan Keeffe will bolster a strong VFL line-up for the GIANTS’ round four clash with Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Inaugural GIANT Haynes, a 205 AFL game veteran and 2020 All Australian and Kevin Sheedy Medallist, returns to the team after being the travelling emergency for the AFL side’s clash with the Saints in Canberra last week. His inclusion further enhances a strong VFL outfit looking to make it back-to-back wins on Saturday following an impressive 46-point win over Sandringham last week.

Keeffe also returns to add further experience and versatility against the Tigers after the 204cm utility sat out last weekend’s game for the birth of his son. Haynes and Keeffe come into the side to replace former AFL co-captain Callan Ward and emerging defender Leek Aleer who have both been selected for the AFL side’s clash with Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Saturday following strong VFL performances.

Billy Clark and James Creighton also come into the GIANTS’ VFL side in place of Marc Sheather (suspension) and Harper Montgomery (leg). Sheather will miss four games after being found guilty of rough conduct against Sandringham’s Max Heath last week, while Montgomery will be sidelined for around 10 weeks with a leg fracture sustained in the win over the Zebras.

The GIANTS’ VFL side will feature 15 AFL-listed players against the Tigers on Saturday, with Max Gruzewski, Darcy Jones and Phoenix Gothard among a host of players looking to continue their push for AFL selection through the VFL.

Stone? He’s still got AFL upside IMO. Just needs to stay fit.

Huge win though against the ladder leaders.

Some big numbers from Haynes, Madden, Stone, McMullin.

By all reports Stone, Rowsten and Jones looking terrific every week.
Angwin getting lots of praise too.
