For a guy that is supposedly a dud keeper and gets caned on this forum unmercilessly, he certainly has taken a number of sensational catches this summer - the latest one of the best you'll see (not to mention fair form with the bat).
 
The problem most would have with Haddin is on account of comparison with his predecessors like Gilchrist and Healy, but on his own at this point he is among the best in the business across all nations.

In terms of talent with respect to just keeping I can't think of any one else that's close to him with the exception of Ramdin from West Indies and Boucher from SAF. The rest would not have been selected to their test teams if it was the 1970's to the 1990's.
 
His batting hasn't been too bad this season, more laziness from only coming in when we're right on top and mostly having to tonk.

Disagree. MS Dhoni is one of the most talented Keeper/Batsmen I have ever seen
 
His keeping has certainly improved out of sight. He has gone from inconsistent and jittery with bat and gloves to reasonably consistent with the gloves (though he makes a few minor errors from time to time) and bat (although he can frustrate sometimes with the shots he plays).

Some of the catches he has taken recently were utter stunners that would've made Healy proud.

Dhoni is a decent batsman who thrives on some extremely flat decks (including that 148 against PAK in 2005/06). His keeping has improved and is indeed solid, but I've never seen him take stunners like Haddin has as of late.
 
Haddin is brilliant at taking the screamers but he can at times struggle with the easy takes, seen him fumble a few which is the only thing keeping him from becoming a great keeper. His batting definitely will drive you nuts, like his keeping can be brilliant but also look very silly with the way he gets out at times.

One of the best WK/batsman in the world.

Boucher - a damn good keeper, and is a tough batsman, not hugely talented with the bat but can definately score runs.

Ramdin - good with the gloves, but his batting however promising is very poor looking at his test average (around 20 IIRC)

Dhoni - best of the current lot IMO. Keeps solidly and a bit of a flat track bully but theres no questioning his power.

McCullum - Par with Haddin (maybe just below). Explosive but inconsistent with the bat, good enough but not a great keeper.

Prior - Scores runs, but his keeping is pretty bad at times.

I don't think that Sangakarra really counts so much he's more of a batsman turned wicketkeeper and doesn't keep as often these days.

So IMO
1. Dhoni
2. Haddin
3. McCullum
4. Boucher
5. Prior/ Akmal
7. Ramdin

So really we are pretty well off with Haddin, most of the rest are either a good batsman or a good keeper, Haddin is pretty much both.
 
Took a screamer in the Sydney test as well.

However it doesn't change the reality that he too often gets found flat footed and lacks a consistency for every ball bowled. He is our best keeper option - but it doesn't make him a great keeper.
 
This 'BAD Haddin' stuff implies that Haddin shells catches regularly ala Kamran Akmal. In fact, he doesn't seem to drop many catches. He does go for the ball a bit late sometimes, though that's a fairly minor error provided that the bowler doesn't spray it down leg (in which case you'd have trouble stopping it cleanly).

He might not shell catches - but he sometimes doesn't go for ones he should because his footwork isn't as consistent as he'd like.

He also lets byes through - which is symptomatic of going late for the ball (again caused mainly by footwork)

In terms of sheer keeping talent, Prasanna Jayawardena is among the very best and he is also a very good test bat except most of his batting successes and consequently keeping successes have come in the sub continent therefore does not yet merit listing in the top rung.
 
good skills. poor concentration. comes through in his batting and keeping occasionally.
 
His keeping is certainly streets ahead of where it was this time last year. I reckon if he can work on his concentration he will rise another level.

Agreed - that's less of a problem now, although having mediocre first slippers like Marcus North won't help your decisiveness in that area (i.e - can they go for it or can't they?) .

The byes become a problem when the bowlers spray the ball down leg, which they have done too often in the past (particularly Mitch Johnson).

But even then, he's let through a few too many - it's not as big a problem now, though.

that's one point - but in the slips - you can be put off by those in front of you - but not those behind you.

Which is why i prefer to be the widest slip
 
dont think i have seen a guy who can hit sixes with what seems so little effort consistency.
