the best thing Ratts did yesterday was start Hampson and Austin on the ground from the first bounce

this allows them to get in the game from the start and build some confidence.

and even better when they both had taken there opportunities in front of goal!!

now Hammer does drop a few marks, but give him time, he is starting to learn to lead hard, pick up the loose ball and dish it off. Just got to love when he is chasing down the opposition, super speed!!!

he is still relatively young in footy brain terms, but is learning the more games he gets. and definately is a better prospect than Sauce, always has been, considering his mobility.

and bloody hell man........his SHOULDERS are MASSIVE!!

He might be able to play himself into a top 10 GC pick!!!!

Ive always been a massive wrap for this kid. All he needs is opportunity and he has shown improvement in every senior game so we must play him for aslong as we can. With Warnock back in the side we should play Kruezer at CHF (takes the rucking duties in the fwd 50) with Hampson/Warnock playing in the ruck.

We will have the benefit of 3 very mobile ruckman and a relentless 3-way ruck rotation. If Hampson can improve his marking then he could well become a fwd option. Having not seen Warnock to the extent of many i still believe that his skills are quite good and does move quite well for how tall he is.

Im excited! :D

Now all we need is for Warnock to remain injury free and get on the ****ing park!

Liking what i'm seeing thats for sure. Yes, he did fumble a fair bit early but working into it pretty well taking a good grab and kicking a lovely goal. The thing i like is that he can at least get himself into a position to do something, unfortunately Jacobs really doesn't. Hampson chases very well also. Ruck work was great today.

Agreed. His 2nd and 3rd efforts at stoppages were very good too. Hopefully he'll stay in the ones and keep developing because I can certainly see him in the team with Kreuzer and Warnock purely because of his agility around the ground. Reckon Ratts would have loved the mark off one foot for the goal and his continued chasing in the forward line when we didn't have the ball.

Good LORD what the hell does that guy eat and what is his weights training regime?!

He is monstorous... it showed a close up of him during yesterdays game and the deltoids on him are unbelievable.

Surely he would have to be the broadest player in the AFL... hes built like a massive "V"!

Nah....

;)
One thing he has really struggled with in the past is holding on to the football, and whilst you could see he still struggles with this, there's no doubt he's improving. I'm not sure whether it's poor technique (I'm inclined to think this is not it), a lack of confidence, or something else but he does fumble the ball a fair bit which is disappointing and something I'm sure he will continue to work on.

The grab he took in the 3rd quarter out on the 50 metre line on the boundary was really good as it showed us a few things. Firstly, he CAN take a grab, which is why I said I don't think him dropping the ball so much is due to poor technique. Secondly, he is attacking the ball more and more which indicates he may be getting more confident in himself.
Hampson's flaw as a forward is he tries to fend off his man with an arm instead of using his body and arm in a one on one contest.

Hammer ends up trying to mark the ball one handed.

Carlton didn't do Hampson any favours with our slow approach down the wing and kicking the ball on his head. Though Hampson needs to learn to lead and the Blues need to honour his leads.

SH took two clean marks on the lead against White and on Mclean's head on the wing in 2007.

He can mark if you get the ball in there one out on the lead.

There isn't a defender in the AFL who can match a player who can run 20 metre in 2.83 seconds and is 6'8". Hampson made Jeff White look short when the former Demon was cast in the role of the defender in 2007.

Will be hard to push off the ball once the rest of him fills out.

I hope Hampson develops as we hope. :)

Settle down tiger :D

Not the best day to be judging his ruckwork considering the opposition
Actually I think this was the perfect game to judge his progress by.

Should he be beating Sandliands or Cox? No.

Woods is a year older, drafted 2 years earlier, and played twice as many games.

Hampson flogged a highly rated young ruckman. He is ahead of Woods.
Does that say more about Woods than Hampson? Maybe. But yesterday we compared apples with apples and Hampson came out well on top IMHO.

Anyway, what I would like to see from Hampson next pre-season is to spend months with Sticks, Hartlett, Fev, Bower, Jammo and maybe Kreuzer........and mark the ball over and over again. On the lead, in a pack with blokes hanging off him....

If he can start to hold more marks he can be a very dangerous player.

His positioning and hence, understanding of the game, has improved beyond belief in 12 months, and he now gets to the right spots, and all the contest he should. Now he needs to work on the skills that will see his natural abilities win these contests.

Can we carry Warnock, Kreuzer and Hampson?

Not sure. Warnock will not be able to carry first ruck when he comes back.

Can Hampson develop into a ruck/forward?
Will Hampson/Warnock release Kreuzer to CHF?

Not sure.
If we can't then it opens up some interesting possibilities re trades:

Hampson to GC is the obvious one - top 10 pick IMO.

Warnock to the Dees who will likely have a top 10 pick as well.........many things are possible.

Agree BB, he's shown some great signs, not to mention improvement.

Look, I know he has a lot to work on, but I think considering how raw he's meant to be to this game compared to so many other young ruckman...he's very impressive.

His brain is obviously adapting ok. From all reports he works hard during training and looks very good in the drills, so I'm confident he'll keep working on his skills and, hopefully, he'll just keep coming along nicely. He's an exciting prospect that's for sure.

When I saw him at trainging in pre-season I thought he had a long way to go, and he does, but he has still shown more this year than I was expecting. At training, he "kicked" a ball off his knee (left-side but still!) and he was dropping simple marks.

The two games he has played he seems a lot more confident, and it's fantastic that he has such great endeavour. Endeavour gets you a long way in today's game. It's enjoyable just to watch someone learning the game, looking quite unco at times but improving. He make's me laugh.

The recruiting team deserves credit for the players they've chosen over the years with great attitude and real endeavour. Russ, Gibbs, Murph, Kreuz, Hammer, Bower, Robbo, Army, Browne, Anderson, Jammo, Grigg, AJ, Eddie. These guys give 100% every contest. Austin looks to be similarly minded too. It bodes well for us and every game at least you know a lot of the guys gave it their all.

Always great to see the blue boys get up over anyone but especially that mob.

IMHO we should be looking to secure all 4 of the big men (kreuz, hammer, sauce and rw) we currently have because with 2 new teams coming in (in terms of draft and salary concessions) these 4 guys could be our ruckmen for the next 8-10 years.

Its very easy to see one of our guys going down with an injury during a 22 round season (warnock hasnt even got on the park yet) so maybe some of you guys shouldn't be so quick to assume we will trade one of our bigs.

Wouldn't it be great to give up hammer to Gold Coast then watch him tear us apart when we play at princess park. NOT

No way would I trade this guy. Star in the making - it would be madness to spend all this time developing a gun ruckman to only trade him for a speculative draft pick.
