Thread title probably doesn't explain my feelings about tonight. Ofcourse I am disappointed, but the effort late, the wake up call for the boys, Mick getting an understanding of our downside, all make for a positive showing against Collingwood next week. For some reason, I am probably more excited than I may have been if we stole this one, even though I expected a win.

Don't bother bagging on the plan or Mick, the season is going to be a fantastic journey.

**** I love this club.

LoL??

<.<
So how are the offsite 'vitamin' injections going for you guys... and that sweet deal that the AFL tried to cook up for you where you got nothing in the way of penalties?

Weirdest feeling I'm not down at all and I feel like we really should won that game but its still only round one. Personally I would only make one or two changes for next week depending on whether Yarran is suspended for the soft rib punch which he still pulled anyway.

I am more upset about the way that we forgot how to play the game in the second than with the overall result. If we had been half hearted in the second and actually played properly, we wouldnt have let them get away from us.

We can only get better from here.

Were some good signs, lucky Richmond didn't kick straight, the margin was flattering towards us. Our weakness and the area where we again lost this game being in the most important part of the ground is very concerning. Carlton will need time and it might be longer than just this season.

I totally agree, and I hate how some players are labelled as pathetic etc after a loss. Yes, we played really badly at times, but we need to stick together. It's our first home and away game under a brand new coach. These things take time-just look at how long Lyon's game plan took to settle in at Freo last year.

Yes and no. Hoped we would play some good footy and we did. Hoped we would not play as badly as we did vs lions in nab cup and we did.

I'm not going to lie for a while there I thought we were going to get smashed by 50 something so it was relieving to see us almost pinch the game when we pulled our finger out. I reckon beating Richmond is overrated and we can certainly learn more from a loss then a win. Only the first game with a new coach too !

Yarran kicks that at the end and we'd be ecstatic. Richmond have to beat us eventually!

Thought we were gonna get done by 70+ there. We showed heart though, we'll learn the gameplan, we'll get better. And as long as we have the heart, we'll win more than we lose.

Best part: we can only get better.

This.
Onwards and upwards!
How long did we give Ratten before we started calling for his head? Let's do Mick the same courtesy:p

Skac Mick, I think Roos' son finished Year 12 last year.

I thought there was plenty to go on with (as a rule you should ignore anything said by any supporter during or immediately after a match)

- Hampson kicked his goal for the game, and then set about marking anything his arms could reach. Now with that issue hopefully set to rest he can get his goal kicking right.
- Jamison looks in fine touch - has done since the preseason, and thats something really positive.
- Yarran is still quick, if a little tunnel visioned at times.
- Bootsma played a good game
- Both ruckmen had their presence felt. Warnock may have to get used to the VFL.
- Walker played the third tall role in defence really well - and this may be why Laidler didnt play. Its possible that they see Walker and Laidler as the same kind of player - and Walker is faster.
- Betts and Garlett took a while to get going - BUT they did get going.
- we did come back from a 42 point deficit

Overall I thought we were ok. Yes I can buy the gameplan not sinking in yet, minor changes for next week. Its going to get better lads.

Dud.

Delist.

Like Cotchin who choked against GC last year.

Just knew that if we got close enough, Yarran would be the one to get his hands on it and give us a shot at the win. Don't blame anyone for believing they could kick it. He didn't know how long there was left on the clock. Look at Riewoldt's snap that was just after the siren.

Hope Scotland's return for round three allows us to play Gibbs and Yarran up the ground.

Eddie started well... took that hit to the head in the first and spent some time on the bench after that (remember me asking after him?) and went out of the game for a quarter and a bit. then in the third, he really started coming back into it.

Bootsma was great.

Heno out for Laids.

Robbo out for bell.
Umm... Hendo out for Laids? really... are you sure about that?

Are you sure that you dont mean Duigs out for Laids or possibly Tuohy out for Laids?

I think you guys did well considering that you've only had a pre-season to establish/integrate a new game plan. Which really isn't enough to have it ingrained into the players so that they use it effectively and without hesitation when stressed.

The silver lining for you is that even though your players have a serious handicap (change of game plan) which makes a huge difference when you're under pressure.. you still nearly came back and pinched it from a team that has been working on it's current game plan for years and has been flagged as a 'finalist'.

Really, Mick gives you a get out of jail free card for almost any loss you like this year, and when you win (especially against top 4/8 sides) you can rub it by pointing out you won despite still getting used to the new plan. Win win scenario :)

Bootsma was good one on one, but didn't do enough to help us get out of the backline and disposal wasn't as crisp as laidlers has been under pressure.
Laidler is jsut as good if not better one on one and is a far better rebounder.

Laidler has to be in the side

Boots is not ready

So you would drop him before Duigan?

Boots played a lock down role last night and still has the ability to run...

Yeh I think Bootsy did enough, Duigan looked clunky

Well I think it confirmed what we already knew about those two:
Boots is young and inexperienced, prone to panic, but has a lot of upside. Could be a star, needs appropriate mentoring.
Duigan is old and experienced, brave, but has poor skills and no upside at all.

I was verging on suicidal at half time, but got through that and was obviously bouyed by the second half. I like Malthouse's comments today, and I think we've got out of this game a few good things. 1) we know what we look like when it's going well, and 2) we know what it looks like when we're getting absolutely pantsed. More of 1 and less of 2, we win a lot of games.

We had to lose this game to Richmond some time. I can kinda live with that. Got to scrap 2 or 3 of next 4 and we're OK.
