I posted this in the upcoming TV series thread but I think it probably deserves it's own.

Gonna have it's haters but I'm going in with an open mind.

Looks kinda great.

Having Snape be a handsome black guy instead a disgusting looking white guy is crazy

The race swapping isn't going to go down well at all.

Is the idea that each season is one of the books/movies? So season 2 would be Chamber of Secrets?

Makes sense to me. Wonder if they'll get to the end. Wheels could fall off pretty quickly.

Ah yep new gen series that no one asked for.

Antagonist brocolli hair.
Black character with short dreads

The HP world looks identical to the movies. What's the point of this. Looks identical but doesn't have the magical impression the original gives. Zero aura for strong lack of words.

Not sure how many episodes or how long they are going to be but if they try and do it GoT style the first few seasons are going to feel very bloated.

On the trailer itself I'm pretty skeptical. It looks fine but also kinda why bother? The movies (especially the first few) are just about perfect as adaptations.

Also not really feeling that Nick Frost performance.

given the first two movies were faithful, this looks redundant for now, even a bit uncanny valley. could just be a safe nostalgic trailer approach though, nine months out.

8 eps to seemingly cover the first book (which was the shortest book), lot of scope there to be its own thing compared to the movies. We just don't get that in this trailer.

8 episodes! Guess there's going to be a lot of fanfic in there.

I'm also wondering how they are going to go forward with the production. These days tv show seasons take two years to produce but that's going to be problematic given the kids ages. Probably better than the alternative of working these kids to the bone every year though.

Where’s all the colour. It’s so dark for the first story
Yeah it's like the colour was drained out of it and I've seen Deathly Hallows part two and that wasn't nearly as dark as this.

Cynical part of this is that not they're remaking Harry Potter but that they have to remake it without too much differentiation from how the movies look, given there's a whole entertainment infrastructure already built around it.

I can sort of make peace with that knowing if there's a thrill to be had in watching this series it's not gonna come from a trailer but rather the experience of getting to like Episode 4 of a season and knowing you've still got another 4 hours left to spend in this world.

Watched the trailer on my phone in the morning and was indifferent. Just watched it again on TV and kinda fine with it. Unmistakeably from the HBO styleguide, but not in an offensive way and certainly no worse than the David Yates films. But also now that's it's a tv show, I'm far more interested in how the series is written.

The actor has apparently had death threats.

British actor Paapa Essiedu has said he received race-based death threats following his casting as Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation.

“I’ve been told: ‘Quit, or I’ll murder you,’” the 35-year-old star said

...

“The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying: ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you’,” said Essiedu,

I know it's stereotypical to not like the new cast choices with remakes of beloved franchises, but these ones really do seem off in a few places. Frost as Hagrid is not going to be great, is it?

The show looks really good. Snape is a terrible choice, of course. I don't like Hagrid much, and Vernon should be fatter.
Hagrid doesn't look like a half giant, standing next to Harry, he doesn't look different to a normal adult.

But the main trio are spot on.
