Obviously the report was thrown out. No way anyone could get weeks for that lol. But the free kick is interesting. I don't think Hodge should get it has Harry wasn't moving (?) but then again Hodge went in with his head over the ball like your meant to do in footy. I thought the sliding in was more to do with legs like the Rohan incident. IMO it should have been play on

Ironic isn't it, the player is penalised for an incorrect decision and the umpire walks away with clean hands, who the **** does the AFL think they are?

I'm sure the umpire was penalized / will be.

Surely you don't want him dropped to the VFL after mucking up this incident?

Would a player get dropped for badly screwing up a marking contest

I think the new rule suggests a definite free, as backed up by the AFL after reviewing the incident. Hodge slid in, head first, but took Harry's legs out, fortunately without injury to either. Harry was attempting to pick the ball up while holding his feet, as is being encouraged. In the light of the new rule, there is no grey area on that decision. He just got it wrong.

Has there been a real apology made to Harry himself yet?

Harry would have been clearly effected by being reported, he's just that type of guy, who would have thoughts of missing games running through his head for the rest of the match, and it's almost certain it would have effected the way he played.

Some have called for match day reports to be banned completely, I agree with them, because if an umpire makes a mistake in a big game, and reports a player it could change the outcome of the game if that players performances drops off after being reported.

It would also take one level of stress off the officiating field umpire, they would then only have to concentrate on actually umpiring the game.

My question is this: How forceful did Hodge's contact on Harry have to be for Hodge to be the one on report? I hope it's not until their ankles are snapped in half.
That's why they bought in the new rules, so that players would keep their feet more, but the Hawks clearly don't play to the rules, simply because they don't have to it seems.

I know that's why they brought the rule in, but how badly do you have to break this rule to be penalised by the MRP?

I wonder what people would be saying if Hodge got reported.

I don't think you could be penalised but it would begin to be a free kick from now on

The problem is that there has been one serious injury from a player sliding in recent memory and the whole rule is a knee jerk reaction from the AFL. To be fair though I don't mind that a player could get punished for sliding with their legs first into the other player like the incident earlier in the game we got punished for, but the Hodge incident should never be a free against him because he went in hands first to get the ball. Players should not be punished for desperation like this, soon the AFL will ban smothering because a player gets knocked out from the kick so its too dangerous now...

No, it was a clear free to O'Brien. You're not allowed to slide, even with your head - that's how Pendlebury had his leg broken. What the rule SHOULD be is another story, but that was clearly "making forceful contact below the knees" - even Gieschen admitted it was a free ;)

I've always thought that the best interpretation of this thing about head & or leg contact is to penalise the guy who initiates or causes the illegal contact. If you are still or are contesting the ball correctly & some one contacts with you, THEY are at fault & should cop the penalty. Two guys showing reckless intent & collect each other should both be reported. The free kick would be cancelled out by each others action. IMO
