whether wa have been worked out or not, our form the last month still hasn't been particularly good which has me worried. sure we won, but we struggled to beat 2 teams clearly out of the 8 and 1 team who barely made it. the worry is that in all of these games, the opposition got on a massive roll when we had the game under control, and had either the geelong or dogs games gone another couple minutes (and essendon another 5-10) we would have lost.

When you are the best team in the league, other teams have to come up with a way to beat you.
We came up with a games style that we don't need to change much to beat most teams, they now need to come up with a way to beat us.
It probably wasn't until nearly half way through the year that most clubs and or commentators realized we weren't just "lucky" with our GF win last year and were genuinely the best team in the comp.

So the challenge we now have is can we adjust and or tweak our game style to counter other teams plans against us. This is where Dimma, the rest of the coaching staff will earn their money in the next few weeks with their ability to coach against this in game and for the players to be able to take on any adjustments in game.

I've read nothing into our games over the last few weeks. The last game we played that mattered was against the Pies.... won that one going away from them and they actually played well. Since then we had a foot on the throat of Cats, Dons and Dogs and then just eased up. Gold Coast we went at half rat power as well, they were just horrible.

As long as we turn up with the manic pressure in our first final, we'll win and win quite well. If the boys have forgotten what finals footy should look like, just show them the first qtr of the QF against the Cats last year. That was how to make a statement.

I'd recommend some on here have another watch of that game vs the Cats last year. And then the GWS game, and have a good hard think and come up with a reason why basically the same team would not bring that same pressure. Pressure that hasnt happened for weeks or more.

It will be finals heat and they all know what they need to do and how to do it. A message can be sent to what everyone fears, we are bringing a level of game play noone can replicate. The first 15 minutes of this game is going to be epic.

18-4 and we are talking about being found out. Hahaha

We had nothing to play for in the last month Dimma and Prestia basically admitted we were playing within ourselves.

Geelong and Essendon threw caution to the wind in an effort to try and make finals. Teams won’t be able to do that in finals as the pressure is far more intense meaning they will have less time or change their mind about taking those risky kicks into the middle.

We’ve been coasting.

Nothing more, nothing less

Now it’s the real deal it’ll be completely different, similar to how we didn’t show our full bag of tricks last year RE: cats in H/A vs finals

Just quietly I do think the targeting jack has been a shot across the bow though too, that we aren’t just the “small forwards” team and that Jacks still “got it”. Gives oppo’s plenty more to think about whilst we’re hiding our true plan/s

Arguably the best Brazilian jiujitsu fighter in the world Marcelo Garcia releases training videos, whilst opponents prefer to hide and keep their moves secret. He says that if his opponents want to study his game, and try to counter it...then they are entering his domain...and he is the best in the world at his game.

If the opposition think that they've worked out our game....good...let them try, because it only benefits us. We are the best at our game.

The media is having a wet dream over the fact that we played a poor game in a dead rubber and have been found out. A few media personalities are getting on the bandwagon that Hawthorn have figured us out and will beat us?
What do people think? Have we been found out or are the media beating this up?
Hope u don't mind the intrusion. An interesting question considering RFC is the best 4qtr team in the land. Not sure I agree with the media.

Every team gets worked out eventually. Clarko cluster got worked out, Lyons defensive structure, magpies 10-11 manic pressure, Pagans paddock, etc.

A great coach can work out a structure with their list to negate a particular game style but not all teams are capable of executing it if players aren't able to adapt very quickly.

You just have to hope that the coach of your team can come up with a new plan when it does get worked out. Or change up the structure and plan mid-game when required. Great match day coaches are few and far between I think.

If Dimma has been worked out as they say then he has to come up with a winning formula. Look out for it. RFC isn't on top by luck.

I was sitting behind the goals, top deck of the Western Stand on the weekend, and the Bulldogs did something that I hadn't seen before against us (and you can't really pick it up on TV).

When we set up defensively we shift across the ground like a rolling zone, most clubs just kick it down the line or try and force their way through the middle opening up our intercept marking game.

What the Dogs did differently was motioned in one direction, waited for the rolling zone to shift one way then doubled back kicking the opposite way to an open player who sat out the back of our zone. Was really noticeable in the second and last quarters watching them kick out of their backline (the end I was sitting).

Was very effective in getting around our zone.

Having said that, we don't look to have moved out of second or third gear for weeks now... the real question is, can the team get the revs up and switch to that higher gear in finals again. I think they will.

I was at the game and noticed this also. Ball movement down the ground zig zagged to catch the defence out of position. Lack of pressure on the ball carrier in the backline made it easy to get that first cheap little kick, barely 15m, for a mark and pressure release. Then zig zag it forward in order to be unpredictable. Rarely did they bomb it out their backline like teams do when under pressure. Our pressure needs to lift to impact the disposal.

The answer is in short, yes. But that’s because what we do isn’t at all complicated or mysterious. Our game style is predicated on the following:

1. Manic pressure
2. Stoic defensive structure
3. Agressive spread from the contest (helps points 1 and 2 defensively, point 4 offensively)
4 Continually moving the Ball forward.

The difficulty I think oppositions have when playing us is employing a counter-system that does not massively deviate from their stock system, and being able to absorb and employ said system over a four quarters.
I was going to write something like that, great points.
Opposition teams know what we do, but can they counter it?
If they can’t counter it without compromising their system then the only option they have is to copy us and we play our syste, better than anyone

Everyone on here should read your post.....enough said.

Paul Roos was just talking about this on On the Couch. Said it needs quick ball movement not slow chipping and that Hawthorn have been best at that style over a long period. He reckons Geelongs style of down the corridor won't work in finals as it's too easy to shut down the space. He also said he thinks we've been going at 50% but know how to ramp it up for the finals. :footy:

For starters the media have jumped on about how great the Hawks are and the fact is if Buddy played last week we would be playing Sydney. Look at the Hawks game against the cats. They controlled nearly the entire game util about the last 6 minutes when Geelong made the game a mad scramble the Hawks were very , very lucky to win it and they were just plain horrible against the Saints who couldn't beat an egg. The hawks are pretty average with an average list and have totally over achieved this year. The media are crossing their fingers we fall over . They pump up any side that we play against.

Been worked out? Well we started playing this way mid last year so it would be pretty strange that on the eve of the finals that the sides have finally had us all worked out. I remember the same old garbage being a story in Grand Final week last year. Sides try to keep possession and stop a mad ball type game but the problem with that is one mistake is all it takes to all fall down. Kick to the corridor? Well that just makes it a 50/50 ball and just as dangerous for the ball coming straight back in again. If you haven't got your own style this deep into the season good luck.

No game is sure thing but if we simply play our high pressure game with our very talented list we can go all the way.....AGAIN!

Go Tigers!

Let the media circle jerk all they want. When you are King they have to come after you. It's hope rather than confidence. Same side we spanked in round 3. Nothing has changed.

The best part of our last month is that you can’t figure teams out when they’re playing practice matches.

Let’s just hope that’s what it has been and we have another 2-3 gears to go up.
I’ll bare my arse in Bourke st if we don’t. If i wasn’t superstitious about betting in Richmond games I’d have my biggest bet ever next Thursday.
Rarely do you see a team in such an advantageous position.

What are you, some sort of thread clean freak?
Plenty of great input here.
Cheers OP

nothing wrong with the content but there’s three threads going with the same conversation. just like the trade thread and lynch thread are the same thread with different names. wait until the preview thread starts and then there will be four threads discussing this same thing. 6 threads to discuss 2 topics on the same board. just merge them ffs
