If Stevie J had a better technique in his set shots, I think he'd be more up around the 500 goals mark about now.

and Mooney, and Mench, and Pods, and Stokes ... pretty much every one except Plugger & Dunstal

To me it just looks like he kicks on the outside of his foot rather than the top. As some here have pointed out it could be because he drops the ball directly in front rather than slightly off centre.

This might not interest many of you but many years ago the footwear of choice amongst young Frankstonites was the Dunlop KT26 and this was a great shoe to wear at pre-season training back in the 80's. You had plenty of grip and the air could flow around the top of your foot. Not much padding on top, though. I used to come home from pre-season training after doing a lot of goal kicking with a small bruise right in the "sweet spot" on my right foot for the drop punt - which was between the second and third metatarsals. If I connected in that spot I had the most accuracy and distance.

The Torp was different though. I had to kick on the flat outer part of the foot - more on top of the 3rd, 4th and 5th metatarsals.

It appears to me as if Hawkins kicks a drop punt on the part of the foot I'd use for the Torp. Because he has a bigger foot than me he can get away with it most of the time. I reckon if he just dropped the ball above his right foot a little more he might hit that "sweet spot" or find his own which is right for his foot. As it is, though, I have little confidence in his kicking for goal. His general field kicking, though, is exceptional!

Comparing his U18 style to now, he seems stiffer through the upper body on approach, and most importantly, he seems to "plant" his non-kicking foot more now than then. He had a lot more bounce and momentum back then.

Matthew lloyd in his last 5 years was useless in front of goal. No offense but id listen to jAson dunstall on goal kicking not someone on here who think he knows everything. If you know the answer I'm sure chris scott would live to pay you 200k a year

His Technique is poor but it's manageable from 40m+ out because he's forced to kick through the ball to get the distance, when he's closer and he stabs at it even just a little bit it's not going to come back left to the right the way it should/does.

Problem being the misses from 30 out on a slight angle do far more damage that the ones from 40M+ out.

Mate u are coming across a bit strongly, to put it mildly to avoid a card. It's a forum where we are allowed to discuss our players and their strengths and weaknesses and how we think they can improve their game. It's what forums are for. If u don't like it then don't come onto
the forum. Oh and Lloyds goalkicking was always top notch, even when his play deteriorated later on. He would be great to get down to the club to work with Tom.

I'm big not getting stuck into this guy sorry if it comes across like that. Our supporters as a whole weve been incredibly harsh on him he's played only 70 something games. All for opinions just Think how privileged we are to be witnessing this team. Let's look at the positives.
