Ok don't have much idea when it comes to televisions so need help.
We just bought a small 22 inch lcd screen for our tv room. It doesn't say anywhere that it has HD but it does have a HDMI input. I plan on connected the playstation 3 through the HDMI input but will it be worth it? The playstation is currently on a plasma with no HD so it's just connected through component cables. What will the quality be like through the HDMI input? I've seen the playstation through a HDMI input before and it looks much better, but i'm just worried as it never says it has HD what the quality will be like.

What resolutions are the 22inch and the plasma?

i.e. Does your plasma/lcd display in 1080i, 720p, 576i etc. when the ps3 is connected

HDMI means high definition media interface. if its got HDMI input, its a high definition screen.
Over the HDMI cable you will be able to display resolutions up to 1080p (full HD), though most PS3 games are native 720p.
Over component cables you will be able display resolution up to 720p/1080i (HD). Technically you can display 1080p over component, though licensing agreements permit you from doing so in most instances.

On your 22" LCD, your eyes will not be able to discern between HD and full HD as the screen size is small.
If you already have the component cables you should probably stick with them. Otherwise you can pick up a 2m HDMI v1.3 certified cable for around $30.

Just because a tv doesn't have hdmi does not mean it will be a lower quality. Also, just because a tv has hdmi, doesn't mean it will be able to display 1080p.

 You can run HD over component, but his TV has HDMI input, HDMI is a high definition input...
Whether or not thats HD or full HD is pointless as at 22" screen the human eye will not be able to tell the difference between HD and full HD.

Alright thanks for the advice. I've put it on the component cables and well it looks pretty average, probably worse than it did on the non-hd plasma. So I'm going to buy a HDMI cable this afternoon, and will let you all know how it looks

His plasma is not 22"

I'm trying to establish whether the sacrifice in size is worth the extra pixel count. IMO, it won't be.

Yeha to be honest with you I'm not that impressed with what it looks like with the component cables. I really doubt it could get any worse and there's only room for improvement with the HDMI cable. I'm buying one this afternoon, so will have to wait to then

the PQ is usually very good over component video. You sure you are not using composite video cables? As the PS3 only comes with composite video.

Ok got the HD cables and wow is all i can say. Looks 50 times better than it did before with the normal cables, and looks much better than it does on the plasma. Glad i bought the HDMI cable now:thumbsu:

LOL so funny reading this thread as I had a recent experience with a Hardly Normal (read Harvey Norman!!) salesman on the issue of HDMI cables.

Apparently in order to gain the full blu ray experience on my new 1080 tv, I "NEED" to use the best HDMI cable available which is dependent on the speed rating of the cable.

So how much did he quote me for the said cable???????????????????????

$389  pleeeezzzzzzz

SO is there a HDMI expert out there that can explain to me why I need to pay the same amount for the cable, as I did for the unit :confused:

You don't. Complete scam. A $20-$30 cable will do the exact same job.

always wondered this re: cables for blu-ray.
i can get a 10meter sucker (i need a long one for a projector running through the roof) on ebay for about 40 odd bucks, but as above, they can go for around 400 beans.
Is there that much diff in cables?
Do you lose anything with longer cables? All i note is extra thickness in insulation with longer cables?

I'm not a HDMI expert, but HDMI is a standards based digital interface meaning the signal is sent as 1s and 0s. It either receives the signal perfectly, or it doesn't.

As long as the cable is HDMI v1.3 certified, meaning it supports up to 1440p video (your TV will only support 1080p at this stage), and it bitstreams HD audio (meaning it can carry Dolby HD and DTS True HD - the HD audio codec on blu-ray discs), then the $30 cable will perform just as well as the $200 cable.

One thing to be aware of is the cable length, which can result in attenuation of the signal. As the HDMI standard specifies no maximum length of cable, a better constructed, more expensive cable may be able to meet the HDMI specifications for longer lengths. Also a better constructed cable may be more resilient to damage and breakage because of better materials.

Basically, for any short runs 3m or less (between your HDTV & AVR or PS3), any v1.3 certified HDMI cable will do the job.
For the longer runs (like from your ceiling projector to blu-ray player) it may be wiser to spend a little more on a better constructed HDMI cable

cool, thanks :)

yeah unfortunately my amp only has optical audo- hence i wont get 'hdmi sound' but will atleast get true HD from the blu-ray

bitstream HD audio from the PS3 to your AVR over optical. If your AVR can decode it then you'll get HD audio through your home theartre.
Pretty much all the new higher end AVR's can decode HD audio.
It makes a difference. The HD audio really sound is amazing.

i have a kenwood krf-5050D amp, i dont know how to do what your saying. And the blu-ray i have is the samsung bdp-1500. I am playstationless :(

WRONG

optical doesn't have the bandwidth to do True HD or DTS HDMA. you will get DD or DTS at a better bit rate than DVD but still only the older lossy formats.

HDMI has a bandwidth of 10.2Gbs, Cat6a 10Gbs. So you can buy CAt6a cable for $0.80 (80 cents) /metre for long runs. Finished stuff is about $2 - $3/m

Cat7 (100Gbs) is about triple Cat6 but also 10X faster so, $2.40m and about $8m for a roll (300+m)

So HN are having you on. It's a total rip off.

LOL, went in to Rick Hart the other day (yeah it's a dockers thing ) and the guy was saying its a complete scam by HN and that the beilkin HDMI cable they sell for about $40 is just as good. He reckons those $380 cables are made for about $60aud so it's a complete rort.....

OK, I have a noob question. Im looking at upgrading my PS2 and 64cm CRT to a PS3 and 32in LCD. I already have a very good surround sound system. Will I be able to run all the sound output through the amp, or will only the PS3 be able to come through the amp and the HDTV through the TV speakers?

I assume its possible as the amp has composite inputs and the tv im looking at has composite output. Will much sound quality be lost using these cables?

if your talking the red yellow white cable that ship with the ps3, then YES.

much sharper esp @ 50 inches.

480 v 1080.

no. it will probably sound better than the TV speakers. higher quality parts i would think, amp, speakers etc on the surround system.

you'll only get two channel HDTV so no dolby.
