Just did a cut and paste of this from another thread rather than typing it out again.

Josh Head must be close to getting a call up. Runs hard and always kicks it 60 metres. Just looks like he would be more value than a Thornton who seems to prefer handpassing than kicking. Head regularly kicks goals too and doesn't mind doing the hard work to make or get into space.

I watched the South v Peel game the weekend before Thornton was recalled, and while he was okay, he wasn't outstanding. Head on the other hand, was BOG. Scotty played a bit deeper in the backline than Head, while Josh played across half back and sometimes up on the wing. IMO he provided fantastic run and drive and kicked the most amazing inside-out-reverse-banana-with-swing from 45m out right on the boundary.

At the time I thought Scotty was bloody lucky to get the nod ahead of Richie, and thought at the time that the selectors obviously saw something that I certainly didn't.

Richie has from all accounts, carried on his good form since then, while Scotty has certainly not done anything much to write home about.

[I am only comparing these two in particular as I saw them side-by-side and the poorer one got the call up, while the better one didn't.]

I didn't see the game were they both played so I can't comment on that, but I'll add my voice to Thornton being a bit off. I reckon he came back too soon for mine. It would have been a great opportunity to see Head in big league even if it was for one week while Thornton had one more chance to get up to speed. Even last week, I though Thornton was better but still not quite with it.

I suspect that horse has bolted now. Thornton will have to have a real shocker or get injured before he's dropped which will make it harder for Head.

BTW, can anybody give me Head's age? He's been around for a few years now so I can't imagine he's younger than low 20's. If that is the case, and if what the WAFL watchers are saying is true, then I'm really disappointed he didn't get a run - especially against Richmond, I mean he couldn't have made it any worse.

I just listened to that youtube that Freo1995 put up of harvey on 6PR. Doesn't sound too promising for Head.

In summary for those who haven't listened:

1. We've used 33 players so far but he doesn't really want to go much deeper into the squad than that.

2. Then he said, but we've got Brock O'Brien who's pretty much ready for a run, so he'll get a look soon.

3. And everyone's forgotten about Foster ('cept us... ;)) but he needs a few more games to get his match fitness up and should be ready to go after the first break (after Rd 8).

4. Brad asked what about Head? he's been in good form for Souths? Will he get a run? harvs replied, he's been in good form for South Fremantle, he's a ball carrier and he's quick with a long raking kick, so yeah he might get a chance at some stage later on if we think the matchups are right.

5. Macca will play on Friday. He won't have a player to "mind", he'll just be allowed "to play". [:(]

So after all that - it sound like we shouldn't expect to see head in the team any time soon.

And if not, then the question must be asked - what the ____ did we draft an almost 25 year old for??

I guess harvey and co just see him as back up in case someone gets injured.
I'll have to take a closer look at him.
Maybe there is something I'm missing.

IP, I think Harvs said in that interview that he hadn't had a chance to see the EP v SF tape yet (the question was on Taz, not Head). He may have a bit more to think about when he does, assuming it's not just some edited out package of Taz, but if it is, there would have to also be one of Murphy and one of Head you'd think?

Players need to be rewarded for good form. Josh really deserves his opportunity. Hes played very well and needs a game to allow him a chance to show his wares.

Hes not young, so as IP said why draft him if hes basically a filler. Also if we're going into some sort of rebuild is he worth his place at his age\playing upside vrs a young'un?

4. Brad asked what about Head? he's been in good form for Souths? Will he get a run? harvs replied, he's been in good form for South Fremantle, he's a ball carrier and he's quick with a long raking kick, so yeah he might get a chance at some stage later on if we think the matchups are right.

So we're going to keep Macca in the team to just roam free when we've got a bloke in the reserves who's a pacy ball carrier with a long raking kick and who also happens to be in sparkling form?

I know which one I'd rather have running around as a free linkman.

I heard that part too and thought that it didn't sound good for Head.

Agreed. A bloke in form, with pace, good skills, a raking left foot or Shaun:o. Hmmm tough one that.....

Think harvey said the same thing about Mayne. That week or week after he got a gig. Surely we can use 34 players harvs, you know you want to :D

So far it has been difficult to see a clear game plan or selection policy.

First there is the selection of MJ in the draft. Surely once you have selected him, and with Hasleby gone, he should be playing, or else it is a selection stuff up. I'm not a fan of Bradley, but he is quite a different selection dilemna than Dwarf Johnson.

Then round 1 we have a very conservative 22 selected, including players who showed no pre-season form, and not including others that did.

Now the news on Head, who should be a hair's breadth from selection given his age and form, otherwise as has been said, why drfat him???

As for game plan, the backs, midfield and forwards have all been slaughtered, and all look to have little idea what their team-mates are going to do.

I think Harvey has just discovered how far off the pace the club is, and is trying to think his way through a totally different scenario to what he had in his mind at the end of last year.

Good post Gav.

To me it is a little baffling - why draft mature age players if you're not going to give them a chance? Head in particular - AFAIK he's in no worse form this year than last year, and there must have been a reason as to why he was drafted. What was it, and why is that reason no longer valid?

And I have to say, playing Macca would be deadset suicide against Geelong. They absolutely murder you on the rebound when you turn it over.

I believe Ma.Johnson is injured and that has been the only reason he's not played ... isn't he? Otherwise I generally agree.

I've never seen Josh Head play, but by all reports he plays a similar role to that of Black, Mundy, Thornton - ie. attacking half back, penetrating kick.

Now I'm a fan of Thornton - after all, he's been a mainstay of our best 22 for a few years now. But we really need to ruthlessly go through our list, and if Head can do the same job, then maybe Scotty has some trade value? Thornton hails from Victoria, and is marginally older than Josh Head.
