CHAPTER 1: ABOUT THE BEEZ TROPHY

Winning the beez Trophy is, perhaps, the greatest individual honour available in this league. I certainly think that’s the case. Voted by the players, the beez Trophy recognises the best poster of the league each season, but what does it actually take to win one?

In this thread, I look to explore that question by considering the last five completed seasons of qooty, and the beez winner for each of those seasons. I’ll then present some trends and general concluding observations. The structure of the thread at this stage will be something like (and I will link to each part here when posted):

But first, let’s take a quick walk down memory lane. If you’re not familiar with what the beez Trophy is or its significance, I hope this thread will also act as a nice introduction to the award.

WHO IS BEEZ?
beez debuted for the West Coast Wonders way back in Season 9, and played 21 games there before transferring to the Baghdad Bombers. beez is a club legend at the Bombers; beez' Bomber career included 291 games at the club, with premierships in Seasons 14, 23, and 24. beez now plays for the Gumbies, and has played almost 400 games in total.

THE INAUGURAL BEEZ TROPHY
The award was established by our dear friend Jack The Godfather six seasons after beez debuted, in Season 15. It was named after its first winner. Including the initial award, the award has been presented on 14 occasions, including the last 11 consecutive seasons (since Season 22).

You can find the announcement of the initial award here. beez (366 votes) ultimately proved victorious over Eth (353 votes) and PVF (349 votes). Currently players Broken (4th), Itsmyshow (6th), Mobbs (7th), and okeydoke7 (=8th) also featured in the top 10.

VOTING PROCESS
As it currently stands, each club can nominate five players to vote for the posters they deem to be most deserving in an ordered list from 1-20. Points are awarded and tallied from the (potentially) 60 voters. The player with the most votes is deemed the winner.

WINNERS AND RECORDS
From the 14 beez Trophy presentations to date, there have been 12 winners; two players – The Filth Wizard (Seasons 17, 24) and JoshWoodenSpoon (Seasons 25-26) – have won the beez Trophy on two occasions.

Reigning winner Elton Johns Wig registered the most ever votes in a season (1,648) in Season 32. The Phoenix, Royals, Bears, and (most recently) Furies have all been home to two beez Trophy winners in their victorious seasons.

A big thank you to Hate for these statistics. You can learn more about the beez Trophy and its history in Hate’s excellent thread here, updated at the end of each season.

SO - WHAT MAKES A BEEZ TROPHY WINNER?
As I mentioned earlier, I will mostly be considering five case studies – namely the last five winners. Introducing:

Let’s get into it! :bee:

I'd like to thank Hate, serial_thrilla, and WaynesWorld19, whose historical stats work I have relied on throughout this thread. I would also like to thank manangatang, TheInjuryFactory, Tigerturbulance, Barrybran, and Elton Johns Wig for affording me their time, kindness, and thoughts in relation to their own beez-winning seasons.

Robbed.

Okeydoke7 is back and the league is better for it. The league’s best goal kicker has been a behemoth in the limited time since his return, and how good has it been to see the league legend back to his best?

As a 12-time club leading goal kicker, former league administrator, club captain, best and fairest, Fred medallist and Sweet FA Hall of Famer, it is clear to see that okeydoke7 is the league’s next immortal.

His media contributions revolutionised this game and made this league what it now is. He is respected, loved and better than most of us. Long reign the legend of okeydoke7.

CHAPTER 2: SEASON 28 - MANANGATANG

WINNING SEASON28
LEAGUE ADMINISTRATORAnt Bear
SEASON BEEZ VOTES1,174

“mang is a clear choice of his peers as the most outstanding poster on the Sweet FA board.”

Ant Bear, 11 December 2019

Season 28 saw long-time Demon captain and board stalwart manangatang take home the chocolates in what was an interesting count at the top end. The top four vote-getters all achieved 1,000+ votes (exactly 1,000 in the case of Test Tickle), whilst mang’s total of 1,174 was the lowest of the five winners I’m analysing in this thread.

Two potential conclusions you could draw from this information are below. I’m not sure that they’re mutually exclusive, or at all accurate.

  1. Comparatively, this season had no single stand-out, with the winner polling fewer votes than other analysed winners.
  2. Comparatively, this season was overall stronger, with more posters demanding votes.

I lean toward number two and, therefore, see this as an extremely impressive victory. manangatang had to fend off very strong competition at the top end, and was an unbelievably deserving victor.

Let's take a closer look at the top ten of Season 28.

SEASON 28: TOP TEN

SWEET'S COMEBACKS (43).png

For those who prefer tabulated data:

There was a clear top four, which supports a theory I'll discuss later called "the big four". There was then a considerable jump to JoshWoodenSpoon and Ant Bear, then another jump to the final four posters in the top ten.

manangatang ultimately edged out two future beez Trophy winners in Barrybran and TheInjuryFactory, which suggests this season was particularly pointy at the top.

MATCH THREAD POSTING

SWEET'S COMEBACKS (44).png

TOTAL H&A MATCH THREAD POSTS481
AVERAGE H&A MATCH THREAD POSTS30.06
% OF TOTAL LEAGUE MATCH THREAD POSTS0.83%

Of the last five winners, manangatang comfortably posted the least in match threads in their beez-winning season. I have a couple of things to note about this.

  1. mang still posted 30+ times on average each and every week. This is, by any measure, very active – and I honestly think it’s about the sweet spot for match thread contributions. Recent seasons have debatably seen too many posters post too many times (like me this season), making match threads difficult to follow.
  2. Season 28 in general was considerably less active. Whilst the other four seasons produced a total of 90,000+ match thread posts, Season 28 produced just (“just”) 57,663. So whilst it initially may look like mang posted less in match threads than other winners, the proportion of total match thread posts actually tells a different story.

MEDIA POSTING
We know that manangatang is one of the all-time great media (and match thread OP) performers, but what did Season 28 output look like?

Through the entire season, mang diligently updated his “Weekly Review” thread, which included awards such as Media of the Year, Spam of the Year, and Post of the Year. There were also a number of associated voting/nomination threads.

Media - S28 | The Weekly Review [Season Wrap-up]

These weekly threads are, frankly, a heap of work, and mang did it every week for the entire season. The weekly awards resulted in engagement across the league, and it meant there was always something to talk about – the thread ended up around 24 pages. manangatang’s production value is really high, with swish graphics and humorous copy. If anybody is looking to get into the media game, I recommend going through some of mang’s old threads for inspiration.

Other media contributions included:

Whilst not strictly media, mang’s match thread OPs in Season 28 were also quality:

Official Match Thread - Season 28 Round 16 - Mt. Buller Demons vs. Las Vegas Bears at The Snow Dome

These foreshadowed mang’s “choose your own adventure” match thread OPs, which I think are pretty much universally seen to be the greatest match thread OPs of all time.

PREVIOUS POLLING
manangatang had a fairly quick rise to success. After placing 57th in Season 25, mang took a big jump in Season 26, placing just outside the top 20. By Season 27, mang was just one place outside the podium, before winning the beez Trophy in Season 28. It was manangatang’s first time polling in the top three.

EDIT: Apologies - a minor typo here. Replace the "Season 29" label with "Season 28".

LET'S HEAR FROM THE WINNER
H: manangatang, why do you think you won the beez Trophy? Specifically (if you remember), did you focus more on match thread posting, media, something else entirely, or a combination of all?

M:
"I was super-active in media in that season, and particularly I put a lot of work into an awards-style thread - post of the week, media of the week, that sort of thing. But in addition I probably made up a whole lot of weird sh*t media stuff that people mustn't have completely hated.

Of course I was also quite active in match threads as well and had lots of fun representing the mighty Demons. I remember getting a lot of inspiration from match threads for media and getting quite creative with some of the stuff I came up with.

ROUND 1 (49).png

As for why I think I won, I'm not really sure. TiF was incredibly strong in his media in that season and I remember rocking into the Beez thread with zero expectations and just seeing how much TiF was going to win by. It was pretty surprising to be honest, but a happy surprise I guess."

PREVIOUS SEASON'S WINNER
The winner from the previous season, The Jesus (then Harvey Manfrenjensenden), finished just outside the top 20, placing 21st with 402 votes.

SEASON 28 - GENERAL THOUGHTS
I think manangatang is the best poster I’ve seen in my time here, and I feel privileged to have played alongside him for so long. In my view, mang encapsulates everything good about the league, showing creativity and humour in all facets of the game.

What a wonderfully deserving winner – and I think his Season 29, where he narrowly lost out to TheInjuryFactory, was even better than his Season 28! mang and TIF truly made for a wonderful beez-collecting duo in these seasons.

More on TIF’s Season 29 victory in the next instalment!

Don't be silly DenieD. Headless knows he's the favorite to win this season, so he's pumping the tyres of all his competitors so he can claim this was the best victory in beez history. 🤗
Ok. Congrats on another second place in the beez

Great thread Headless. I particularly like how often I'm mentioned in the poll.

Headless do you have a player rankings list of average beez votes per season?
For all seasons? Unfortunately not.

For just the five seasons I'm analysing? Unfortunately not.

BIG TIME.

Dear Headless

I was wondering if anyone has won the beez Trophy AND the Mobbenfuhrer Medal in the same season?

Regards,
Dorothy Dixer.
Oh, I can't imagine anybody ever doing this, AB. 🤗

On a serious note, the poll should be a landslide victory for TheInjuryFactory in season 28. manangatang was brilliant that season but TIF was better in season 28 and mang was better in season 29 when TIF finally won.
