I just wanna say, that I think Ayres is a sore loser.
Why bring up the thing about St Kilda having top draft picks?
Look at our Matt Maguire, he was picked up at 22. At 19 years old, he is big, strong, willing, and very very effective. Is that a high draft pick at 22?
Maybe the Crows should have picked a young future star rather than trade a pick for a broken-down former star (you know who I mean)
The AFL system is geared around equality, which means that teams finishing low on the ladder get the best picks. It's designed to encourage equality and a level playing field (apart from Brisbane).
So all the best for the rest of the season,
and don't forget not to drink the tap water unless it's been boiled and filtered...
:-)

Most teams do get a good player around 20-odd. The difference is for the finals teams this is their first and only go at the top 30, where for the scrubbers its their 3rd or 4th pick (in the maguire case). Many teams picking in the teens have to pick a player for their specific needs, when you have 2,5,13,21 you dont have that problem. To answer your question, yes, 21 (which he was actually picked with) is a high pick, its only just out the first round. That year Adelaide had one pick before St Kilda's 4th pick. They used it on Reilly, who is coming along pretty well.

The system itself I don't have an issue with, apart from concession picks, which I think are rubbish.

Beautifully explained. Totally agree.

Priority picks are a strange thing aren't they?? Extra bonuses for being absolute rubbish!!

I agree with having them, but not the timing. They should be between the first and second round.

2001 was a joke.
Fremantle, St Kilda and West Coast all had priority picks. Freo used pick 1 to trade with as we all know.
First 6 names sound familiar?

Funny to think that if St Kilda had just had one less win or draw in 2002, they could have picked up Wells or Salopek as well.

Scrap them altogether.

I can't see what's so special about a side that wins five games or less.

Their finishing position already gives them nice picks without any extra sort of concessions.

Perhaps we should wait at least one more year before calling for the abolishment of the concession picks. ;)

I like the idea about having priority picks in the 2nd round.

Don't think Freo did too badly giving up the #1 pick, as they did get McPharlin - a damn handy KPP.

Reckon the Hawks stuffed up, as Hodge IMO isn't the best of the bunch & how are Ladson & Elstone going?

Reilly was not a shocking pick, just like Kenny v Pavlich wasn't a complete waste as he should be handy player. We have made blunders though with 1st/2nd round selections - Angwin, Handby, Gilligan, etc

Agree we haven't been able to get it right all the time, like your beloved Port Adelaide. ;)

Handby was 3rd round pick ;)

Reilly will develop into a good player. He hasn't been given the chances that the other have. Yeah I would prefer Nick Dal Santo but I am reasonably happy with Radar.

I make no secret of my admiration for Port Adelaide and for good reason.

Any team that can go 3-1 after four games despite being without key men (for various different games) like Francou, James, Primus, Cornes, Dew, Hardwick, Pickett, Wakelin and no trade replacement for Nick Stevens deserves maximum respect and we should learn from their effort, professionalism and ability to take things as they come realistically.

If we were to lose a comparable gaggle of players? We'd shut West Lakes down for the year.

I think his point regarding Freo trading their #1 pick centred on them being allowed to trade a pick they were given to improve their squad under the goals of the priority system which are of course to make you competitive in the years to come by giving you the first and/or second crack at the best kids there are.

PS: Therefore by trading it you're abusing the very reason you were given it in the first place. While unlikely, what was to stop Freo trading that pick to us for Ben Marsh?

7 David Hale Kangaroos Broadbeach Qld

The only good news for us out of a poor showing against the Swans (after we decided 5 goals up at the 15 min mark was enough football for the day) was seeing Hale play his first game for the year.

Still has two years to develop his body further, but is 200cm and 101kg, played half the game and had 15 disposals, 9 marks (7 contested), kicked two goals and had 10 hit outs.

Thank god we don't have to rely on Porter forever...
