AFL Club
Richmond
Matt Rendell.

Regarded as a fantastic recruiter, you only have to look at his track record with Adelaide to know he is one of the best in the business, also very highly regarded by Adelaide fans and most were quite sad to see such a great recruiter have to leave in his situation.

He could really get Richmond where we need to go in the next two drafts, I feel he could really help us nail those 3rd and 4th picks and uncover some great gems.

Article alludes to the fact he will almost certainly be back in the AFL system by years end and that 2 Victorian clubs are circling.

Don't know what your opinions are, but for mine, I'd love to see the RFC chase him HARD!

Make some connection with our indigenous centre and it good be a good news story all round.

Be a good get, but need to make the structure work with FJ - I know he hasn't been everyones cup of tea, but FJ has been looking to take us in the right direction in recent drafts

His track record is unbelievable, 07 was his first draft and since then he's picked out;

Tex Walker - pick 75
rory sloane - pick 44
Davis, Gunston and Talia - All around 15ish mark, pretty handy talls I'd say
Petrenko was also a late pick, hed be a handy upgrade on your Edwards/Jackson types

Ian Callinan and Josh Jenkins as well were rookies who have impressed

And Matt Jaensch was around a pick 30-40 mark I think, not sure how good he is but I've heard he is a handy player.

and Dangerfield, at the time he was ridiculed by Port fans for not taking Ebert, well, we all know who did better with that pick ...

Walker would have gone much earlier but he was a NSW scholarship player who actively hounded the Crows to pick him up. This gave other clubs little to no chance.

On Rendell I'd love to have him at the club but I did hear him say after Adelaide shafted him that he was planning on retiring at the end of the year anyway.

So if he was to come on it would probably be part time and in the best way to compliment FJ.

I imagine there would be Clubs going much harder than us given there current situation. Melbourne, Port and GWS spring to mind.

If in a part time role - absolutely.

Taking over from FJ, no. Let FJ do his job for a couple more years before thinking of changing. He's assembling a pretty good bunch of kids.

Said it the moment he got sacked he was required at Punt Road

Good coach too

Would suit a number of roles

It's this type of quality and experience our back room lacks

IMO our recent improvement has been on the back of trades and early draft picks which anyone with any idea would have picked up , some of the risky ones may yet bite us in the arse .
Beyond that IMO our drafting within the ND has been sub par . It's time for an overhaul and remove the last remaining parts of the tarnished TW era football department . I'd certainly look at Rendall and would consider changes to the conditioning department also .

Toady - smarter than your average bear

Power offers Rendell a return

Agree Dr Tig, wouldn't want him coming in and FJ getting demoted. Would much rather he come in, in some sort of PT role, or just as a senior recruiter/assistant etc, with FJ still heading up recruiting (Y)

Adelaide have done very, very well with late picks. And that's been Richmond's weakness.
Obviously their strong network throughout SA has helped, but I'm sure he could bring some contacts over.

Spot on Slatts , networking is so so important . Fwiw , IIRC FJ joined the club albeit within a part role in early 2005 , that year four clubs finished below us . 2 have since won flags , 1 finished top 4 last year and the other looks a good chance of finishing top 4 this year .
The four were Hawthorn , Essendon , Collingwood and Carlton .
Plenty of players have been judged alot quicker .

I hope he can scout/draft better than he can interview. Didn't seem to me that too much was going on upstairs when he was on Footy Classified etc after his sacking. I believe he just started yelling and gave really no reason to why he made the comments he did. Lets be honest, he made some good picks like every club and every recruiter, and he has obviously made some bad ones but he was made to look good by great player coaching and development. I thought it was agreed that a lot of what made our picks/trades look bad was the lack of player development and getting the potential to translate into results.

Yep im all for this. Disgrace how it ended up with the crows.

Matty Rendell come on down
A lot of us are still filthy about it.

He's a good man, it was absolutely disgusting the way he was threated; I've got no doubt the AFL strong-armed us, but we should've had the balls to defend him.

Absolute joke that after the AFL did a hatchet job on him, it took one counselling session for him to no longer be a racist!!

But, if he's gunna end up somewhere, may as well be the Tigers.

I believe he just started yelling and gave really no reason to why he made the comments he did.

He'd just been villified in the media, abandoned by his Club, and labelled a racist by all and sundry - triggered by somebody he considered to be a good friend.

His comments were clearly not intented to be racist - but he was on a hiding to nothing the moment they were; no matter what the intent of what he said was (and it was "We need to be careful about this, or, in the future, Clubs are only going to recruit Aboriginal Kids if they have a white parent," and then he got slammed for suggesting that they should develop an academy for aboriginal kids to help them come to grips with the demands of AFL football), it could be portrayed as racist by somebody with an agenda.

Absolutely. Good old Vlad going round saying it had nothing to do with the AFL and it was a Adelaide Football Club decision is the biggest load of BS ive heard.

He has done a sensational job for the Crows and if we were able to attain his services in any form id be one very happy camper. :thumbsu:

I understand that, but most intelligent people would have been able to form a few ready made responses and been able to deliver them appropriately. But it was obviously a shocking time for him and the emotion got the better of him, fair enough. I just didn't get the impression he was that switched on.

PS I dont think he is/was racist but IMO he said, "in the future, [I'm] only going to recruit Aboriginal Kids if they have a white parent!". That's why his close friend reported it in the first place. Whether he was making a point or not he said that. If he said what he claimed to have, that generic unnamed recruiters wouldnt draft them we all know that nothing would have come of it. But honestly if that was a strategy he wanted to stick by in drafting good luck to him. I dont see the big outrage. They may miss the next aboriginal star or they could avoid the next Liam Jurruh. He is the talent scout so it is his risk to make. Talent will NEVER be overlooked completely. Its a ridiculous drama that could have been avoided. Honesty to the wrong person at the wrong time was his downfall.
