It was me, it was me! I exchanged a few words with him at the Members' Day and told him to have a good year. Clearly he listened.

I've always liked Skippy, albeit like others I wasn't sure if he had what it takes to really consolidate himself as an AFL player. He's not out of the woods yet, but it's really pleasing to see him playing the way he is. Ditto Mattner.

My next project, along the same lines, is Bock

Arrowman not sure whats happening at West Lakes but Bock's been looking good in the Eagles so has Watts (might be a touch better), both playing mainly in defence , with some nice runs outa defence with long kicks.

Skippy was showing signs last year that he may just make it although i still had my doubts due to his lack of pace & kicking length but he does get where the ball is and generally does not just cough it up when caught so perhaps confidence in using what he's got will get him over the line. At this stage i feel he's moved ahead of Bode & Schuback.

This year is going to be very interesting to watch as the "2nd tier delisting candidates" compete with each other to stay out of the danger zone.
Inopportune injuries,luck,form,attitude,team/player list balance, opportunity etc are all going to play a part in deciding the end of year order.

I'll stay with my predictions - If everyone wants Nye, Knights, Schuback, Hinge, and probably least 2 quality midfielders this years draft, someone out of our current midfield group is going to have to make way.

Small, short kicks, and very average pace cannot be corrected !
Yes their smarts will compensate somewhat but ultimately in todays game they will be mis matched by the better sides who'll exploit our weaknesses.

I actually think we also need some quality talls WW. M Stevens and Clarke should retire at years end. Smith and S Stevens should get delisted and Bock and Krugs are iffies.

I agree, I can't see Shiley, Bode and Skippy lasting after the 2006 delistings.

obviously its easier to get a CHB than CHF, but really the club has to settle on its back 6 that can last for 5 yrs, and it pretty much has. Then say unless the likes of bock or stevens can play up forward its time to trade or delist them and recruit young forwards, not just 'talls' so we can have three or four young tall forwards competing for the two forward Key position spots up for grabs.

HOW is it that two AFL coaches can see the same thing and call it so differently?

Adelaide coach Neil Craig happily put his Old Firm – Mark Ricciuto, Andrew McLeod, Simon Goodwin and Tyson Edwards – at every point around the centre square at the SCG yesterday, leaving critical midfield duties to Martin Mattner, Robert Shirley, Hayden Skipworth and Brent Reilly.
Sydney coach Paul Roos happily watched this unfold.

"It means we shut down the A Team ... and, to their credit, their young guys, their second-tier midfielders were better than our's," Roos said.

"That's a real positive for the Crows. But how many teams and coaches aren't going to be happy to see Mattner, Reilly and Skipworth in the midfield at the expense of Ricciuto, McLeod, Goodwin and Edwards?

"Every coach will be happy to see those four out of the midfield."

Even Craig, as he stresses Adelaide must go beyond the Old Firm to strengthen the future of the club. But Roos suggests the Crows should not be overly keen to move beyond the Old Firm too quickly.

"Adelaide has to capitalise now that they have such a group as Ricciuto, McLeod, Edwards and Goodwin," said Roos, adding he appreciates the Crows' mission to put the Old Firm on the periphery of the centre square and advance the careers of young players.

"But in 2005 and 2006 having those four midfielders is a positive for Adelaide.

"You might have to wait for the planets to align again to get four quality midfielders at the same time."

I agree Craig is doing everything he stated mid-season, looking for more responsibility from players outside the "A" group.

During a period where we are having some unexpected success there can be the perception that weaknesses in the team have been sured up.
Craig said on the weekend we are not a premiership team - so are we 1,2,3, 4,5 players short and in what areas?

I would suggest the area is the midfield and one or two KP's - therefore from the team who played and won on the weekend we need to find maybe up to 5 players to replace.

Yet because we won no-one dare suggests any player COULD not be a part of the next Crows premiership.
You and I know that not to be the case.

Craig if he is a good coach is developing role players within the team structure, who ultimately fills those roles TWT - Iam predicting simply that based on physical attributes alone IMO 2-3 players would be extremely lucky to be part of Craigs longterm plans.

This is one of the reasons I get annoyed at people who want to play Hentschel as a defender. Why wouldn't players look more comfortable in defence? It is easier to play there. Hentschel has shown he has the talent to play in the forward line. That's where he should play.

As much as I want to see new players introduced into the side, macca is spot on about these guys. They needed to step up & so far have (I thought Rutten had already taken his chance last year though). They have to be congratulated.

It is still very very early days though.

WW - i havent taken it personally and i welcome discussion on a topic dear to my heart
- i think you have misunderstood me - i still consider Skippy to be on my "delisting candidates" list (and Shirley,Doughty, Bodew, Schuback,Massie,etc) - the point i was trying to make was that he has at this stage of the season probably moved ahead of say Schuback and Bode because of his performances late last year and this year.
Shirley too has improved his status. Bode suffered an injury at a bad time for him and now will have to fight for a spot back in the side.
However the "delisting candidates" (and i have about 15 on the list - of course thats not to say we should delist 15) will change in order as the year goes on and then at the end of the year other factors as well as form will decide who goes (eg current contracts, balance of smalls/talls etc in the squad,etc)

i suspect my thoughts are pretty much in sync with yours actually ( i agree with your other comments)

perhaps on a more aptly named thread i can put my list of "delisting candidates"
