Who do you consider is a better ruckman at the moment, and which do you think shows more promise? This has been a topic of much discussion before, but as far as I can tell there hasn't been a clear cut poll done, and besides it is an interesting question with trade week coming up.

For mine it is Laycock. He is younger than Hille and has been crippled by injuries which mean he doesn't have the fitness base required. If you look at McIntosh you can see what a difference a big pre-season can have.

Laycock is IMO a better tap ruckman than Hille, although he does sometime jump too early. The main advantage I see with Laycock is his uncanny ability to rove his own taps, and the other ruckmans taps, which gets us centre clearances. He is very good below his knees for a big man.

As a forward I think Laycock is much more damaging. He is the best contested mark in our team IMO. He has very strong hands, as he has shown playing the loose man in defence role and in the forward line. Hille is also a good mark, but I don't think he is at the same level as Laycock in this area.Hille is a booming kcik of the footy, but Laycock is also a good set shot. He provides another viable option up forward, whereas to me Hille looks like a ruckman just resting in the forward line.

Yeah, definately Laycock. Hilley was promising but his star has fallen.

They're about even at the moment, if not Laycock's slightly in front.
Laycock will end up being a much much better ruckman though once he gets his fitness up, adds a tiny bit more weight and times his leap properly.

People complain about Hilles consistency, and it is valid. But Laycock shows the same inconsistency. Yes, he has shown signs of brilliance at times, but Hille should still be our #1 ruckman for next year.

The interesting thing is IMO most people highlight consistency as a reason why Hille is better than Laycock which is ridiculous. Both are way way too inconsistent but Laycock is young and hasn't played a full season because of injuries.

I don't think Hille naturally reads the play very well, maybe it's because he started footy at a later age. Sometimes he gets bumped off the footy way too easily by much smaller opponents. Doesn't really seem to force himself onto a game, have seen him do it only a few times.

Will be interesting to see Laycock have a full pre-season (fingers crossed). He is still inconsistent but that's to be expected.

Hille has 3 years and about 80 games more experience on Laycock so I believe Hille is up now but Laycock will probably overtake him.

Hille seems to always jump early and rarely taps the ball to advantage

Laycock is best now and for the future IMO:thumbsu:

Give Hille another chance but we have Ryder as backup for Laycock and dont need all 3 playing in the same game

Laycock looks a more natural ruckman so I think he'll turn out better than Hille. At the moment I'd just give it to Hille. Both are way too inconsistent but their best footy is matchwinning.

we should move for Jolly, put laycock behind him and let hille roam the forward line. strong hands, good mover and a decent kick at goal both on the move and set.
But he is, at best, a negating ruckman. I would keep him, cos he's a good strong player, but we need some ruck dominance.

No offence Citizen, but tht is a shocking idea. Hille is nigh on useless in the forward line compared to Lloyd, Lucas, Gumby, Bradley, Neagle. The last thing we should do IMO is to go for Jolley- he'll cost a lot and we don't need him.

I have Laycock in front by a nose ;)

I would play Laycock as #1 ruck but see Hille as a backup and potential finals specialist where aircraft carrier size can beat silky bastketball skills.

I think both these guys could be better compared to competitor ruckmen if we had decent clearance players around them.

Someone help me out here.

Can sometime give me a time when Laycock was better than Hille and where he actually looked like being a future star?

Hille took great steps forward in 2006 as captain.....Laycock has never been anything but frustratingly inconsistent!

Wow this one didn't turn out as planned but in my defence Laycock was looking the goods (in his usual tantalisingly-almost-there way) when I made the thread and Hille was just about to get dropped. Quite clearly Hille now and in the future.

Looks like PJ/Auld will have the upper hand when it comes to signing up lamentable Laycock for next year. If ever a Bomber demands a pay cut it has to be Jason. His effort to be assist the backs when Brennan marked in the goal square was hopeless.
