Cripps now realises the Power list has a lack of talent emerging from the SANFL ranks by missing out on those early picks sacrificed for Dixon and Ryder. The situation is compounded by the reality the list is underperforming. The majority of the top-end players are tied to long-term deals, making it difficult to trade these seasoned players for early draft picks.

There is the added pressure of managing the salary cap that is almost at the maximum.

Port Adelaide’s hands are, therefore, tied. There are limited moves to make — and costly decisions underway. Even the early retirement of defender Alipate Carlile with one season to play on his contract will cost the club financially.
