There were two surprises at Essendon training on Wednesday - the presence of skipper James Hird and the absence of spearhead Matthew Lloyd.
Hird, who suffered a broken rib against Richmond last week, was on the track for about 40 minutes, taking part in all aspects of training, including overhead marking.
Despite the impressive showing, Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy ruled Hird out for Friday night's clash with West Coast at Subiaco Oval.
"I think he just wanted to get out of the house. He won't play," Sheedy said just before leaving the ground.
Despite the Bombers skipper being 'completely' ruled out, Hird may accompany the side when it travels to Perth on Wednesday night, continuing speculation that a remarkable comeback might still be on the cards.
Sheedy's explanation for Lloyd's non-appearance was equally simple - the full-forward was resting.
"He'll play," the coach confirmed.
However, the exact reason why Lloyd missed the club's main training session remains vague, with another club official saying Lloyd was having a swim in the pool.
Good news.
