I'm seeing a very uncanny coincidence today, when Essendon appointed James Hird. Does anyone remember when we didn't get Sheedy or Malthouse in the late 80's?

Instead we went for a club champion in Kevin Bartlett. Essendon didn't give Hardwick a chance or chased Mark Harvey and Dean Bailey, instead gave it to a guy who never coached. I'm not saying that Hird is going to be like Barlett, because coaching is very different today.

To be honest, I hope Hird does well. However, I'm so glad that the Bummers gave us Hardwick and I hope that he may be as successful as Sheedy or Malthouse.

It's a good result for us, because when we start playing finals we won't have to worry about Essendon trying to poach Hardwick from us as they will still have their own ex-player.

Hird has under 9's experience.

Looks an ostensibly panicked decision. Dons have had no objective process and will suffer accordingly. $1m-$1.5m a year too!!!!! On top of the $1.2m paid to Knights NOT to coach

Good:thumbsu:

My question is how many games will the bummers have to lose before they realise the problem is not the coach but rather their epically overrated list.

For me it could be similar to the Michael Voss apointment, club legends don't necessarily mean success or good coaching nous, Voss has destroyed that club with some baffling trade decisions.

Hird has what experience in coaching?

For mine, so much happier in how we made our appointment, sure Hardwick might not be as glamorous as appointing a Hird for the bombers, or us appointing a Matty Richardson, but it is a far more sensible move. Even the way Collingwood have appointed Buckley is a ver smart and more sensible way of going about it.

So when Knights was sacked the list was terrible and now that Hird is announced as coach the list has plenty of development left in it?

I like Hirdy and wish him the best, but I can see this being similar to Voss/Brisbane. Hird really needs to do a clean out Ala hardwick.

Spent all day listening to bomber fans on SEN busting out a fistful of knuckle children over Hird's appointment.

Laughed my ass off:D

I wish him good luck

He is gonna need it

fancy hiring two guys in a row with No real coaching experience.
lol.
MUD - FACES - :D

They are a rabble. Seems to me they appointed Hird because of the pressure they were receiving by the members, and having sacked Knights for this very reason. Their process didn't seem to be very rigorous at all.. So glad they declined dimma!

Yup:thumbsu: this appointment reeks of a board buckling to fans and appointing a coach the fans wanted. Although this worked in Sydney with Roos they had a reasonable list to work with. Essendon on the other hand don't and the club will surely suffer from this decision.

Still on coaches I think it amazing that the "captain" of the Geelong ship is the first to jump off:confused:. Everyone thought it would be Ablett coming out this week not the coach:eek:

Maybe in a year or two once the fans have been appeased Hirdy can say he is "burnt out" and they will replace him with LLoyd:D

I have the same view about their list. All of a sudden, their list look very optimistic when Hird is appointed, yet they haven't delisted anyone. Are they expecting him to perform miracles? He's better off delisting many of the fringe players such as Neagle, Laycock, Lonergan and give us Houli.

We'll probably do the standard thing Knights & Hardwick did first up, won't cut anyone contracted. Neagle's under contract, Lonergan will probably get one more year. Laycock is gone, Houli pretty much gone. Welsh, NLM, Lonergan, Neagle likely to go next year.
Realistically we're about 2 years from having a decent list. Most of the talls will be OK for the mid-term, need midfielders and other smalls.
We might squeeze out 9-10 wins next year if we're lucky, more likely 6-8.

Great news for all Bombers haters. Their board really didn't learn its lesson from the Knights debacle did they? In an experience capacity, what would Hird bring to the table that Knights didn't have? Absolutely ZERO except the ability to ensure membership numbers don't die in the arse next year, that's about it.

Does Shotgun Williams have one more year as well?

To be honest, I hope Hird does well.

To be honest, I hope he crashes and burns! And he'd want to be a brilliant coach to turn his rabble of a list into something special. Especially with the eyes picked out of the next 3 drafts. Foolish decision. The brakes have failed on the bummer train, they just don't know it yet.

I'm gunna remember this thread you bunch of evil, twisted, ########ing negative ####s.
