Have you ever thought about these things . Its all curiosity, but interesting. Have a go at my questions.
I'm amazed at Roman soldiers when the empire carried a fullon professional army.
How could you last the 20 or 25 years to get retired and be given some land to cultivate or made a Roman citizen for your service. How many ever got there?????????
How old did the average ROMAN Joe live to without being killed in battle murdered or just died of normal living.
What was Rome like FOR the local messanger (postie) the meat distributer (butcher) the boat cleaners and loaders (the warfies) the bankers (shylocks lenders gamblers).
Still the offer of a deadly life in the army for 25 years, THEN your out and home free. WHAT???????
Doesn't matter about aqueducts and plumbing and heating and running water and fancy clothes it was antiquity , how the hell did they even survive to get to army age?

The Romans were pretty clever, in Ephesus they built a secret underground tunnel from the library to a brothel so guys could tell their wives they were going to the library for a few hours then sneak through the tunnel to the brothel undetected.

Unfortunately, tho, many of their wives worked as librarians. Check your sources.

Even if they didn't work there you'd think they'd get a bit suspicious with their husbands spending so much time at the library.
I reckon they probably didn't. We're looking at it from a 2000's perspective....the sexual revolution of the 50's opened women's eyes, the internet made women far more predatory in a sexual way, advertising has empowered women more, women weren't allowed to vote not that many decades ago, women were ridiculed for expressing opinions on anything, etc etc.

Going back, girls aged 12-14 were married off to older men and were basically treated as brainless slaves.

Yeah women were much more subserviant back in the Roman days, I don't think they were even allowed to go to places like libraries so the men could get away with having a secret brothel tunnel.

You couldn't get away with that now.

Those times were also filled with debauchery. Men having sex with each other, women, children, animals, and no one batted an eyelid. Caligula, Ancient Greece, etc. I don't think they even needed to hide extra-marital sexual acts.

They were pretty loose back then, another thing that surprised and amused me at Ephesus was the open air public toilets.

Guys would just sit and chat with each other while taking a dump, no such thing as cubicles back then.

You could never imagine doing that now.

They probably also had some 12 yr old boy tasked with wiping their butts clean and be subject to sexual molestation.

I have such shy bowels/bladder I'd never be able to do that, I'd have to pretend to take a dump then sneak off into the woods after:oops:

I am a descendant of a Roman soldier who lived thru many gruesome battles over many decades, retired, got his land, and raised a family. So yeah.
I'm a descendant of viking/scandenavians (come hilters master-race blond blueeyed stock) who moved to the upper western islands of Scotland (skye and actually given our own country) after the Romans left Scotland, specifically to repurify the blood line throughout Scotland and the north of England spolit by romans

LOL

I'm the same, I hate taking a dump even with one other guy in the toilet cubicles so no chance I'd do that out in the open chatting to other blokes.

If you unleashed a loud embarrassing shart you'd never live that down as everyone would know it's you, you couldn't just hide in the cubicles until everyone else leaves.

Romans obviously had less shame.
