It was the attitude that your team was the greatest ever and unbeatable going into 2008 finals - that caused the gloating.

I haven't been on the AFL board that long, can only go by my personal experience, BF aside. Certainly wasn't planning the celebrations before the grand final had been played last year, as Hawthorn were always going to be a very tough match up, as any rational supporter would have been able to see. Hawthorn were the better team in the grand final, the players were gracious in victory, I walked out of the MCG disappointed, but not inconsolable. That's footy.

If you tell somebody their team who just won the premiership, is still the second best team on the day, what would you expect the reaction to be?

Um, probably not to say the EXACT SAME THING, by calling us "chokers". That is basically saying "we were not good enough to win the premiership, we're lucky the other team fell over." It is the same thing as Geelong fans whinging about the poor kicking. Hawthorn's pressure contributed to that. I have never and will never, use the term "chokers" to describe the Hawks yesterday, or the Cats on grand final day. If the Cats were good enough on the day, they would have won. End of story.

Oh boo hoo,did those naughty umps miss a free that Duddy Wanklin should've got ?
Go whinge on your own bloody board. We don't give a shit about you Dawks whinging and acting like sore losers.

:D

2008 still hurts huh? I can recall a few sore losers that day too, you were probably one of them judging from this comment.

In case you didn't notice, I was one of the first to say congratulations. I am NOT a sore loser, just somebody who likes to discuss things.

You see, when someone makes respectful discussion (which I have been doing), these kind of posts give ALL Geelong supporters bad names.

Near end of third quarter was it? Campbell Brown misses a mark, a pack forms... Hawthorn pinned for holding the ball.

That decision was pulled out of NOWHERE. As not even the astute (lol) commentators thought anyone was close to being pinged.

Osborne who went in and tried to make the play but then was tackled, was penalised.

I do suggest if that was Selwood, it would be a ball up. That is one example... but there's no point arguing. You're biased, I'm biased.

There would not be a single Geelong fan who would admit ANYTHING in a discussion with a Hawks fan unless it painted their team as perfect.

I'd have to go back and look at the tape.

But it's ridiculous to say that if it was Selwood it would be different though. Did you realise Selwood is in the top 30 players in the league for frees against? It is simply a myth to suggest he gets a charmed run.

I'm not interested in painting Geelong as perfect. Far from it, there's a lot to pick apart from Geelong's game yesterday and for that matter, recently. What you are suggesting is some kind of conspiracy that Geelong and its players are favoured though. That proposition is not borne out by the facts. Geelong is 6th in frees against and 2nd in frees for behind, guess who... HAWTHORN!

How many times did Hawthorn defenders get tackled holding the ball only to get a free for tackle from behind? What is a defender supposed to do, run around a player, reverse course, then come head at him?

The one paid against Ablett? That was definitely a Hawthorn free, in my opinion. In that situation, the chasing player either needs to slightly alter their course, so the point of impact is pretty much the hip, or side (Ablett had time to do this), or to slow down slightly, grab them like Ablett did, but drop to the knees as you do this, your weight will bring the ball carrier down, without propelling them forward, which is the motion that makes it an obvious free kick.

But it's okay to act like you just got shot in the face from a fair bump to the shoulder (that's happened twice now in the past three games from one player in Geelong colours I don't need to name)?

BOTH teams push different aspects of the game to the limit.

just watched that again, and it was far from a fair bump in the shoulder, it was a raised elbow to the top of the head.

So its okay for Ablett to be held for 360 and NOT get pinned for holding the ball?? That happens every week guaranteed.
No it doesn't.
And Scarlett should have had a 50m penalty against him first kick at goal of the day by the Hawks for driving in with the knees
No he shouldn't have.
You also had 7 to 1 free kicks in the final quarter. And always seemed to get some tikki touchwood free in the middle of the ground
So did you. Probably not as many but you still did.
Put it simple for you Geelong is ALLOWED to HOLD THE BALL, Hawthorn and a lot of other teams, are not.
This comment makes you sound deranged. Are you actually suggesting that the umpires apply the rules differently to Geelong players? Do you realise how insane this makes you sound?
But I can tell you now you'd be crying fould if every time Selwood went in for the ball and couldn't get it out he got pinged, as happens to ANY Hawthorn player who dares earn the ball.
No it doesn't. This is some of the worst garbage I've ever read.
You see, when someone makes respectful discussion (which I have been doing)
I'm gonna have to disagree with this one. I wouldn't say that suggesting the umpires basically cheat for us is respectful at all. In fact I'd like to take this opportunity to suggest that you **** right off.

Sorry to be controversial, BUT:
The Handbaggers reference pre dates that!!!
It was from when Polly farmer was playing, and Geelong was the first team to really adopt the handball to effect. We were the "Handballers", became the "Handbaggers/Bangers" i think...............happy to be corrected.

"Same old Hawthorn, Always Cheating".

Ah yes, I quite enjoy standing amongst this bunch and adding my voice to theirs. No real historical context for that chant, we'll do it for any side.

We also did chant a few times "where were you, where were you, where were you when you were s***". :p

Then there are the individual chants we have for our players, very much English football inspired I believe.

its as perplexing to me as to why hawthorn fans booed nevlle bruns for all those years

Didn't he whack Michael Tuck in the forward pocket prior to getting slugged by Leigh Matthews? Not defending Matthews' thuggishness, but Bruns got away with one on Tuck just moments earlier.

And Tuck was weedy...

I'm pretty sure that's right, ironically all other teams adopted the long handball but our club got stuck with the tag. After a few years it was interpreted to mean soft.
