Opinion How did you rate Hurn's first year as captain?

Agree in part! But that's at least 5 years away.

It is quite apparent that we lack the leadership of some of the other top sides. Other than Nic, who has moments of brilliance, who is capable of lifting the side through leadership and individual brilliance?

JK

Some still call him a downhill skier but he was the catalyst in both our finals wins this year.

Geez BF is a harsh critic. I get the GF loss is front and centre when reflecting on last season but I think it's pretty unfair to judge Hurn as an incompetent captain in his first year in the role given what the team achieved overall. I don't remember too many games other than the GF where Hurn didn't have an impact.

The club doesn't hold the lowly opinion of his leadership: http://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/news/2015-09-10/hurn-the-understated-leader

And if you look at his performance in our first final win against Hawthorn he was clearly in the top 3 best on ground and was inspiring those around him. In my opinion it was our best game of the season and it was clear that Hurn stepped up and delivered as strong a leadership as any other captain in the AFL that day.

Admittedly his GF performance was substandard but I certainly wouldn't say he was close to the worst in the team. I think he'll become a little more commanding with his presence and possibly vocal next year with EMac and Brown back in the side.

But I suppose the haters will still hate no matter what happens just like they do with Priddis. With supporters like some of you who needs opposition fans?

Yeah he was huge this year, but unfortunately couldn't lift us in the GF. Don't think he got a great deal of opportunity though.

Frawley was an AA full back for a reason also, he showed why that day.

I haven't seen any hate here ....... most have respect for Hurn but are ruing the fact that we have, in the past, had some excellent inspirational Captains who could produce a game turning piece of play. These types make the difference in Grand Finals. I just don't believe that Shannon has been or will be that type of Captain. Not "incompetent" ....... just steady.

Agree to an extent and this year will be the judge of him.

The GF should burn deeply and not only did his performance dip in the GF, there was little physical imposition by him on the game.

I accept that not all captains can do this and Hodge sets a very high bar in this respect, but for crying out loud he is built like Tarzan. We don't need a Mark Murphy next year, but a captain that will die on the field or at least spill a little blood.

As I said, next year he needs to step up particularly as internally, the eagles are hosing down expectations as it fairly universally accepted within the club that we overachieved this year and we are no certainty to be thereabouts on GF day.

Reasonably confident he can become more than steady. If not then next please (we just look a little light on in the short term unless JK wants it).

Subject to a successful comeback from injury ..... Eric may be the other candidate.

He used to clean campaigners up in the early days but got suspended a couple of times IIRC.

We have lacked leadership from our senior skiers for a number of years now. Hopefully the GF loss helped them grow a pair.

Good thing we have natural leaders like Duggan and Lamb in the wings
Hurn is a pansy

I agree he could do more, but to say he pulls out of contests is a fallacy and complete bullshit.
