Daicos at 10? Kinda shows you the efficiency stats are bullshit.

If an in-and-under midfielder gets plenty of ball, but is always releasing it under pressure... it stands to reason they'll miss targets more regularly.

That said, apparently a kick to a 50/50 contest is sufficient to be considered "efficient"... so there's probably a few players with stats that flatter them. I'm getting sick and tired of Duggan constantly doing a dump kick from deep inside the defensive 50 the moment he gets the ball. Given our lack of contest, it almost always comes back immediately with interest. But because it's going to a 50/50 contest, or even open space, it's probably considered "efficient".

To be fair, that's almost certainly a team strategy that he's been directed to do. But it just doesn't feel sustainable. We need some small/mid backmen that are poised in getting the ball out of defence. What we wouldn't do for a Lewis Jetta these days.

In terms of improvement, the stat I’d like to see is the number of “dump kicks” each game. I think that’s the biggest single indicator of how we are playing as a team.

Does anyone know if there’s a “kicks under pressure” stat or something like that?

Simmo made a good point in the Freo game last week about how Collingwood's first instinct in the D50 is to always handball before kicking, whereas ours is to just get it out of there as quick as possible. Wish we'd take a leaf out of their book. It can be risky at times but usually the worst result is you give it to someone under pressure and they get tackled = ball up.

Collingwood have more players capable of making good decisions under pressure. Not defending McQualter's tactics... but I can see why they think the dump kick might be more reliable. But at 0-9, you'd think they might change-up the strategy.

EDIT: I've noticed Maric doing it a fair bit too. Feel like Duggan and Maric have been determined as the players to get the ball out of defence. Problem is, a dump-kick is a dump-kick. Could come from someone with elite skills, if they aren't looking at where they are kicking, it's going to fail.

It's a stat that doesn't mean much without further examination - i doubt clubs are relying on that stat in isolation.

It should really be broken into something like:
  • disposal to advantage (recieved by teammate)
  • neutral disposal (50/50 or contest - e.g. directly results in throw in, ball up)
  • disposal to disadvantage (Opposition gain possession)

But even then it's not clear whether the disposal was actually effective or an advantageous choice - e.g. a hospital handball would be effective but in reality it was a poor choice.

Everything with a grain of salt

Gee, you're glutton for punishment Westy.

We're just not good enough to expect a win against anyone.
You can think we're a chance, but that's about it.
the weather is going to be nice ...so thats a positive ...thats why we can win...need to hold onto something tuggs ;)

yeah but seriously just want a win ..its getting a bit same same ...I know the lads are on the right track and I agree with what Mini is doing....but I just want a win ...

Off topic but when will we have our first 30+ disposal winner of the year?

Our last was Kelly in round 21 last year.

Kelly had 30+ three times last season, with Duggan, Witherden and Hunt reaching 30 once each.

I could see Baker or Maric having a big game somewhere but nobody else seems particularly likely.
